I think the driver has one big problem in this video: He is expecting to drive an electric car, when in fact he is driving a Hybrid. A hybrid has a gas and electric engine. The Prius' HSD is probably the best implementation of this available.
@randalmcdonald GM Government Motors! Just terminated its own fascist investigation to the Chevy Volt self igniting. The problems with the Prius go far beyond inefficient battery use and charging. I had a Prius go wide open throttle on me! Toyota blamed the floor mat. WTF?
@AthenasConquest Not always, if you can afford it you can use renewable energy like hydro, wind and solar energy :]. Even if the power is from power stations the efficiency is still much higher compared to normal cars..
what dumb ass you are....the reason the battery last over 200Kmiles...is because is is not discharged completely...you obviously dont know shit about hybrid drive...Now I see why those stupid dumb ass engineers from GM can't built proper hybrid cars.just compare the gas mileage between Japanese and American hybrid....the goal of the car is to give you gas mileage.99.9% of the people dont care if the motor turn of an on,I have been using mine for over 228K miles and the battery still working fine
I agree with most of the posters - this guy is nitpicking. The Prius works very well at getting good gas mileage which is the end goal. Yes, everything can be a little better but when you have to deal with people in Alaska and people in Death Valley you tend to make your designs a little more robust so they can deal with extremes of the environment. Prius batteries have lasted more than 200,000 miles - much longer than a lot of engines used to last so let's make sure we keep perspective.
get a V8 gas engine or car, screw this eco shit. ur trying to save green, but all ur green will go away when it breaks down. the battery is like 4,000 bucks. fuck that
your explanation sounds as very light or lacking knowledge, you yourself don't you understand, better take seat, ordered your ideas and explain again, if you know how to handle PowerPoint will be much more entertaining and educational. you do not drink and drive that your liquor can fall.
First he says its a gas car, then he says electric car. Its a hybrid. The gas engine does not make electricity that it uses, the alternator does. The EFU is one of the only thing that always needs a charge to it. It cant push energy non stop into the battery if it didnt have a failsafe for that because the batteries would overcharge and meltdown the whole damn car. IT WAS ALL ENGINEERED.
For some reason I feel that Toyota engineers are far smarter than this dumbass and would probably school him on why they designed it the way they did. Thumbs up if you agree.
You guys can whine and complain all you want about how it works (or doesn't work), bottom line it you and everyone else can achieve about 60mpg, how it's done I really don't give a rat's ass, I just know how to drive the damn thing, period.
Somewhere users are right, all hybrid are not that economic. It's only when you slowdown that the gas engine switch off, that is you save on idle and in low speed it combined but when you go up to 20 miles the battery is useless it goes only on gas. In my opinion it would be better to have self option to use battery or fuel when needed.+ the option to plug on electricity to recharged the battery at home.
i agree they should make like a locomotive and use the electric motor as the main source for movement not the gas motor that should be used as a big generator and not a source at all
Part 4 of 5: to explain this is, let’s say the software is reconfigured to incorporate your suggestion, and the battery is able to discharge to say, 25% before emphasis is put back to charging it up, then it is possible that you will arrive at the bottom of a long hill with only 75% of the battery charged. This might result in the boost running out of power before you get to the top of the hill (and you may only be
Part 3 of 5: possible then it is beneficial for the battery to start its boost as near to fully charged as possible. Since the car cannot predict when ‘that big load’ is needed, the software biases the battery towards keeping the battery fully charged and ready to tackle that big job rather than reducing wear and tear by allowing the battery to discharge more (as you explained very well in the video). Another way
Part 2 of 5: the amount of boost (from motor and battery) required is relatively small. If however you drive up a long steep hill then the amount of boost will be much more. Taking this argument to the extreme, a given battery capacity (fully charged) provides a finite amount of boost (that can be expressed in terms of road grade (slope) and distance). If you wish the amount of boost to be a great as
Part 1 of 5: I own a 2009 Prius with 40k miles, I have observed the issues you mentioned (very clearly) in this video but have arrived at a different analysis. I believe the software has been configured to place a high priority on keeping the battery full, even though this results in losses (as you report) in order to guarantee that the motor will always be available to provide maximum duration of boost for the small engine. Example: If you drive on flat roads then
Glad you have solved Toyota's problems, what's a genius like you doing on ' youtube ' ? Please do not buy or drive one . 4. they have a hard time hauling around fat blimps that need to get a life !
you are an idiot!!!!! the battery is not tiny and is not the reason why the car doesn't use most of available electricity! it's because of the electric motor! that is the thing that is too small to go 50mph and use up the battery!!! you don't know at all what you are talking about in your video.
LOL this guy is sooooo outdated and think he knows everything on the latest technology. It's not good for a Prius to run on full batteries? I had to laugh at that one. The Prius had an outstanding 94% "Customers Who Would Buy the Vehicle Again" feedback from Consumer Reports. If these problems were actually real, people wouldn't be buying them.
Why the fuck did Toyota put a stupid screen on there car so people can just bitch about the car functioning properly when they don't know shit about how the car works
Dear monkey. You do not want the battery to run down to zero. The more a battery cycles from full to empty, it's life expectancy decreases greatly. So you dope, Toyota keeps the battery never fully charged and never fully empty thereby making it last longer than your attention span. There are other problems with the Prius but none you can figure out.
Your battery is designed for city driving, your engine is for performance when its needed or when your battery is low. And I hope to god you sent your Prius back to get the brakes changed so you don't have an even bigger problem when you hit something when they fail.
You're assuming sir that the animated battery level readout when full, represents the actual charge level of 100%, when in fact, a full indication on the display, in actuality, is in the area of 80-85%, so that in computer detected stop and go traffic, the battery pack's internal resistance is low enough to readily except any heavy regenerative charge when braking.
@red5678 He seems to be slightly retarded. And I don't think he is running on all cylinders or full battery power. Lol he is says the terms that mean hybrid its a combo of gas and electric and trying to says it a full electric car. I'm going to sub this guy, he makes me feel less retarded on my bad days. LOLZ
I don't care about the fuel efficiency. What care about are things such as how much electricity it takes to power the thing. My brother is a volunteer fire fighter and he had to take instructions on how to take apart a hybrid because if you touch the wrong power cable it can KILL you. Personally, I would like to know that if I am in an accident and a fire fighter comes to save my life that he can do it without worrying about being killed by my car.
@billyslo87 what about the fucking flammable fuel that all cars have on it....that can kill you too...you guys are fucking ignorant red necks....that dont know shit about anything...
Your car will go totally electric from 0 and up to 35 miles per hour (city speed), you will feel a small bump in the gas pedal, just before the middle. If you floor it, the ICE will engage.
After that speed, it will work as an hybrid, using both the ICE and the electric motors to propel the car.
Also if you run out of battery, the ICE will work until it is recharged.
There is allot one can improve. The Prius was an early success lets call it that way there are much better ways to drive Hybrid. The future is bright .. I hope a interchangable battery/hydrogen cell is going to be common place.
Sounds like your pseudo-science is what's holding back the hybrid car. I wonder if Toyota will pick you up as a consultant for their hybrid programme...
Suggestion: don't try and drive it like an electric car. or like a gas car. just explore and find the right driving style for the Prius - it has it's own - and you'll do much better with it. You wouldn't get in an F-150 (Ford) and try to drive it like an F-430 (Ferrari), would you?
Yeah did you know that running a Li-ION battery at almost always dead is the number one reason that LI-ION batteries malfunction short and catch fire. The manufacturer recommendations are 30 - 90% charge at all times to prevent damage to the cells. If you are using Lead Acid or Ni-Cd batteries then yes you want to do full charge and discharge cycles. Li-ION batteries on the other hand full charge and discharge cycles risks turning your Prius into a giant fireball.
Wow! The top comments and a good majority of the rest of the comments show that you Prius drivers really are fags. Shut up and stop watching the video if it bugs you that much; that's why I stopped reading comments.
My god, you REALLY don't know what you're talking about!! Save us your ignorant rant and buy a big-ass V8 SUV. Seriously, this is a waste of YouTube server space.
The electric motor is NOT an assist, you are thinking of the system used on the Lexus LS cars. The vehicle will drive around using only electricity, as you should know. It looks like you own one. Toyota also doesn't claim that the Prius is an electric car. We all know it's a hybrid. Quit crying about "It's not an electric car", no shit.
And, a full charge/discharge wears the battery out more than a small cycle so to gain a few years they limit the depth of the cycles, much like any car battery.
And, again, the Prius is NOT an electric car, you can not even plug it in to charge for a reason.
It doesn't make any sense. You tell us "it doesn't drive like an electric car!" Neither does a
Ford Excursion. Neither the Prius nor the Excursion is an Electric vehicle. You might just as well tell us it doesn't drive like a boat. It's not a boat either. You can feel it change between gas and electric. You should, as it is changing between the two. It is a hybrid. Sell it, and get an electric car if that's what you wanted.
the thing about using battery more is that it will shorten the life span of the battery, i supposed you rather live with a bit more gas engine than having to replace the battery very often
discharging the battery to it's min and then charge it up very often hurts the battery more than having it almost full. plus Prius computer don't let you fill the battery to it's max cap. When the indicator is full, it's actually at around 80% max cap.
hes getting over 100mpg by the end. this guys an _______. I rented one got 40mpg at 85-100mph ( the whole way from south FL to Gorgia ) 64 mpg in town
You sound like a professor. Toyota built the most fuel efficient car in the world, and you, the all knowing know it all, have the answer. Thanks. I don't know what we would do without you.
There are four fundamentally things that is wrong with your video:
1) They don't view it as a gas car, it is a Hybrid.
2) You don't understand how the hybrid system works, no really, you don't
3) This isn't an electric car
4) You don't know how to drive a Prius. When I first got my Prius, I was getting about 40MPG, 6 months later I am getting 61MPG, I don't care how it does it, what propels what or how, the graphical display helps me get the 61MPG, in your case, the display gets you confused.
@MrKnnknn yea i keep hearing about how people are getting varying results and MPG...how does that work.....if they say it gets 50MPG, how does one get as much as 100MPG as i've heard people have gotten with the Prius?
@whole27 50MPG is what the EPA tests showed when they drove the vehicle. 100MPG is a bit pushing it, but I get 60MPG on a regular basis, all you have to do is drive 60mph instead of 70mph, drive SAFELY in the lane that is *next* to where a large truck drives, not in the same lane! And about 50yards back, this works for many cars, not only hybrids and is very safe.
@MrKnnknn wait, drive in the lane next to a big truck but 50 yards back? How does this help, to prevent wind resistance? So basically, drive as slow as possible at all times and you can extend the 50MPG to at least 60-70MPG. How many gallons does the Prius hold in the gas tank? 9?
@whole27 yes exactly, the lane next to the truck and about 50 yards back, the truck creates an air bubble or low pressure, gas mileage is all air friction at those speeds. One of the reasons the Prius gets good gas mileage is because of its low drag coefficient of 0.25, the lowest in the car industry, better than Ferrari or any sports car, another reason is its hybrid system which uses batteries charge, the batteries recharge when you decelerate or break or sometimes accelerate.
@whole27 The tank is almost 12+ gallons I believe. It takes some practice to get good mileage (55MPG or better) from the Prius, but if you drive normal you can easily get 45MPG.
@MrKnnknn i hate how the 2011 Prius's have the speedometer and monitor in the middle of the car! I know they are trying to change things up but that makes no sense. They might as well put the steering wheel in the back seat next! Also i hate the 3 additional modes they created. I don't want to constantly change the modes or have the modes available and then not use them which i would do. I really hope they change those things for the 2012 models, i won't buy it until they do
@whole27 Maybe you're assuming the speedometer is in the middle? The speedo is digital and can only be seen when the card turns on, it's right in front of you right under the windshield.
@MrKnnknn No that is the old Prius, the new ones have the speedo in the middle and yes it is digital. I loved the old Prius's speedo being right in front of you and right under the dash...i hope they go back to that in 2012
2) You're fuel savings will be spent on replacing that battery.
3) My BMW will leave less of a so-called 'carbon print' throughout its entire life cycle than your Prius made in production.
4) Al Gore is laughing at you while he flies in his G6 bought with money he allocated by spewing wrongfully exploited facts of the Earth's natural processes. That car was created by his propaganda.
aaaaannnnndddd 5) I know you were one of the many that voted for Obama.
@MaxiKing925 You are making many assumptions, for one I am an independent and did not vote for anyone actually, don't care much about Al Gore, I certainly did not vote for hi either and here's what's going to blow your mind away, I used to own a M3 E46, so please don't educate me about carbon footprints. The Prius came out way before Al Gore, Toyota doesn't cater to US politicians propaganda. Keep driving your BMW, it's a great car, however as far as fuel efficiency, good luck!
@MrKnnknn i agree, but mpg aside, those minerals for the battery required alot of mining. and do you know about the mining process? cause i dont, but i do know that its a very unenvironmental, c02 emitting process. youll do better for the environment to buy a volkswagen polo..and if you life in the u.s. golf deisels arent exactly gas guzzlers either.
@MrKnnknn Woooaaahhhh there hoss...this man is simply relaying what he believes to be of concern about the drive-train of the Prius. We are all really happy that you get 600,000 miles to the gallon. However, that wasn't the point of this video. Allow me to help you, he is talking about how the drive-train seems to be constantly working against itself, which could affect the longevity of the vehicle. That could be bad. So...it would seem you, Mr. Keyboard Commando, are the one that is confused.
@platypusone No he isn't relaying what he believes, he is clearly stating what he believes are fact, had he said "Well I am experiencing this and that, I would be OK with it, but to flat out say that the Prius engine/drive train is this and that with a smirkish sarcastic tone, I'm gonna have to declare that I get 600,000 to the gallon, kappish?
THATS WHAT A HYBRID IS. Its not electric. If you want the prius to be an electric car... to fucking bad. it is not. pay some schmuck a few thousand dollars to make your prius all electric and have it hit a maximum of 50 mph
The design of this car is as a in town commuter if you accelerate mildly you will get the full affect of the system. Whe you press the accelerator the car gives you what you ask of it if you want economy accelerate mildly and you will drain the battery once battery full ease up and drain it again and you will save fuel. What other car can you drive 80 mph get 38 mpg range 450 miles 5.75 hours. 65 48 mpg range of~600 miles. This is the perfect highway machine range is king.
The person who made this video forgot to take their fucking meds... obviously... it is such a fucking incoherent rant... it makes me want to slit my wrists... to sum up what this cock head said: I don't understand the concept of a fucking hybrid car and I am somehow more intelligent than the engineers and the other people who work for the multi-billion dollar corporation know as Toyota...
i thing gm designed the volt just for you!!! it fixes every one of your complaints. your video highlights the problem with hybrid cars. and should you Really be holding a camera on the nav while driving?
sudden unintended acceleration may be false throttle input that the ecu sees as legit i.e. induced siginal from outside sources, rf or magnetic, a cleaner power supply would be more expensive but in toyotas case cheaper in the long run if thats the root of the problem, what ever the case I dont want too see one of these death traps driving next too my family until toyota fixes the problem, I vote too take them off the road until the problem is firmly resolved.
Toyota (TM) hired ex-government regulators to kill at least four investigations into problems with its cars in the U.S. That's the conclusion of an investigation by Bloomberg. More toyota cheating
I think there is a reason why Prius is designed as it is.
Here is why. An IC engine is most efficient at about 2/3 throttle. If the power to drive the car forward is less than the 2/3 throttle setting, efficiency will drop fast. There is a point, according to power mappings where it makes sense to store energy in the bat. ... hence the in and out to the bat.
There is technology in development that will make this all obsolete...including the volt.
You lost me on that one. Hybrids suck anyways. I'm just gonna keep driving my landbarge because I feel safe, I like to run over little cars and its paid for.
This guy is a fuck, he thinks he knows what he's talking about. It's a flippin hybrid not an electric car. There will never be a mass produced pure electric car in a long long time because car companies are scared shitless of oil companies.
I think US citizens have become the victims of the Chevrolet lawsuit. Every morning I leave my town on electric only, that's about 3 miles. Getting on the highway I switch to hybrid mode and the gas engine comes on automatically and starts using gas.
From what I've heard the US version of the Prius does not have an EV switch. So you cannot drive in EV mode only. Here in Europe we don't have this problem at all.
But still, a plugin and/or solar version would even be better.
Addition: Ive heard from other local user that they can get 30 kilometer per liter, thats 70 MPG simply by switching to EV mode whenever the battery is full. No point charging it when its full, right? And as you mentioned: pointless charging/discharging the battery all the time. You can add your own EV button on a US version: look for calcar and EV button. After all, the car designed to be as fuel efficient as possible but apparently not allowed in the US. Good luck! Floyd
Why was the Geo Metro able to get such a high MPG? This was over 10 years ago. There was one year when the Geo Metro got 50 MPH. It was discontinued for some unexplained reason.
I own a 2007 Prius and I know you are right, but the Prius is still the most efficient car. But I agree, it would be even more efficient if it would use the battery a lot more, and perhaps last even longer. Nonetheless, it's reliable. I don't feel jerking in my Prius, so I don't know where you get that.
@liveoilfree Just intresting to note, that the prius actually runs more efficient if the battery is only used for assist. The prius was not ment to run long distances on the battery because you cant plug it in, the car has to charge the engine with the engine using a lot of gas. I dont know if you have ever heard of hypermiling, but I hypermile my prius everyday and I can get 65-80 mpg out of it. But I wish I didnt have to use the gas engine at all.
@EcoWhale You can turn your P into a PEHV there is a group that will convert and do so for under $4k. For my family it would be worth it since our daily drive is ~12 round we would hardly ever have to buy gas we could use electricity for car. One problem my wife uses the AC even when it is cool she is an energy hogg. I can hand her the prius with ~of55mpg she will return it with mpg of 35 how you drive is important. If we had bike lanes we could use them but its dangerous to bike here.
@EcoWhale THE PRIUS SUCKS, THERES TONS OF CARS THAT GET BETTER MILEAGE, also its a toyota, also its slow, gay, poorly made and oh yeah gay. oh and the effort toyota goes through to make a prius is ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT,
@laxfreak2828 You're very immature and ignorant of facts; you've got a lot of growing up to do. Maybe if you're lucky, someday you too can be cool like me and drive a Prius and understand that you are now a fool ready for development. But you have to be willing to accept the fact that I am right.
I can't argue with that, you're correct. Toyota can only be criticized for not developing plug-in cars; Toyota is still miles ahead of poor GM (Ford bought the Prius technology).
The problem seems to be that Toyota can't use NiMH for plug-in cars, because of the settlement agreement with Chevron Oil Corp, which sued and won $30 million in Nov-Dec. 2002.
I think you are wrong on this one. From what I've read the new third-generation Prius is going to have a plug-in version coming out late this year as a 2010 model.
Beyond that, Toyota has plans to have a full electric car in production by 2012.
These plans may change due to the current economic crisis, so we'll have to wait and see!
Toyota reputedly will build 500 LITHIUM plug-in Prii, but FLEET LEASE-ONLY, which means they are planning to crush them after the lease expires, and only a fraction in N. America. Their problem remains that they can't use the right battery due to the Chevron lawsuit and patent-squat.
Unfortunately, great ideas can disappear from the minds of people due to the patent process. A much better world would come from the dissolution of this entire profit-based scheme. When will the time limit on the patents run out?
As a Prius driver, I do not want my battery to be empty. When that battery status goes down to three bars I'm fucked, because as soon as I put my foot on the gas the engine starts and uses up a shitload of gas and ruins my mileage. I drive just at the right speed and pace so I'm always somewhere in the mid-upper range, never FULL either because that screws up your battery.
By the way, the FULL and EMPTY indicators on the Prius means 80% and 40% charged respectively, NOT 100% and 0%.
Gentlemen... unfortunately you are all wrong ;) Prius as all other non-plug-in hybrids gets ALL of its energy from petrol. It only uses this energy much more effectively. How it does that? All the primary energy is contained in fuel, and the fuel gets burned(and energy extracted) in the goodoldfashined 4-cycle Otto engine. The batteries and electic motor let engine operate where it is most efficient e.g cruising at highway speeds. When you stop the engine stops as well so it doesn't burn any fue
The electric generator , electric motor and gas engine are used to create a continuously variable transmission through a planetary gear set. When the battery is fully charged (one bar below full, so there is room to regenerate) the display shows this cycling between charge and discharge but there is almost no current flowing. It isn't significant so get over it. If it was significant the mileage would suffer. Do you really expect us to believe that your engineering prowess exceeds Toyota's?
Deep cycling of the Prius battery shortens its life and they are very expensive. THAT is why the discharge is limited. If you knew anything about engineering you would realize that. The battery is designed to last 220K miles and this was not attainable with current battery technology without limiting the rate and depth of discharge.
blah blah blah -- Just drive the car and get 40 - 55 mpg and shut up. Try describing what happens inside a gas engine and car blah blah -- my Prius with 50k miles NEVER "jerks" -- you're a jerk! Drive it and shut up!!
The Prius battery technology is a proven technology and IT WORKS. The Battery should NOT be made do go flat. By optimising the battery at a certain charge they INCREASE THE DURATION OF THE BATTERY, so it will last LONGER.
Besides, if it's so badly designed then explain why its so EFFING EFFICIENT despite this.
You'd be better off with the 1999 Honda Insight. All you have to is balance the Assist on the Honda insight and the car runs on zero to no gas actually shutting off the Petrol engine at all stops and low speeds. The new Insight actually is a more advanced form of the 1999 Honda insight with new PC controllers. The Honda insight can run on zero fuel and while balancing the Assist but it is critical that while accelerating you accelerate UNDER 2000 RPM's.
The Prius is a bit quirky, but 50mpg is awesome compared to any American car. Remember it is an economy car so luxury and smoothness of operation might be compromised. I have a 2005 Prius and there is a space on the left side of the dashboard for an EV mode button, sadly mine is missing the button. I looked it up and I guess America would not allow Toyota to sell the car here with the all electric mode capability in tact. Funny how corrupt politicians favor big money over the will of the people.
Dude your trying a hybrid "gas and electric" not a all electric car. Stop thinking your driving a all electric car. Toyota designed the synergy drive "gas and electric"
i agree, they have gone and developed a 48mpg car, GOOD i say. boggles my mind how consumers allow GMC to sell their Sierra which gets 21mpg and they seem to advertise that its got fantastic fuel economy and is "40% more efficient"!? to what? a 5 tonne truck?
>Well, no one has tried to sell pure EVs, or the GM volt-hoax, for that matter.
Wow, that is so wrong in so many ways. Why don't you look up the EV1 that GM made, they built it for the sole purpose of showing how ridiculous "EV" is and got people buying big trucks and SUVs instead. For GM, the EV1 was a huge success as the spectacular failure of the EV1 pulled customer's attention away from "EV" into bigger and larger vehicles which is a market GM and other U.S. auto makers always cornered.
I'm sorry, Toyota has lots of years of experience and research in this car. Using words like "fundamentily wrong" and "big mistake" is silly. You know what's fundamentally wrong? Driving a car through your neighbourhood while talking and filming.
I think you should do more research on this before commenting like this. If you think it's a "Frankenstein monster", you shouldn't drive/buy it.
Toyota had two "tribes", the gasoholics and the RAV4-EV folks. The Prius was designed to avoid building a pure EV. Instead of being logical, like the GM VOLT, it's got a confused power train.
So after all of this I now know that the prius is a frankenstein monster...lol IT ISNT AN ELECTRIC CAR IT IS A HYBRID. A hybrid is the combination of two or more different things, aimed at achieving a particular objective or goal! Also I always thought a full battery was a good thing! Prius is awesome and totally under-priced. Read some reviews, prius wins. Always. Agreed?
Seems like he's saying the same thing over and over again for 4 minutes.

I think the driver has one big problem in this video: He is expecting to drive an electric car, when in fact he is driving a Hybrid. A hybrid has a gas and electric engine. The Prius' HSD is probably the best implementation of this available.

LiquidPixel999 5 months ago
Part 4 of 5: to explain this is, let’s say the software is reconfigured to incorporate your suggestion, and the battery is able to discharge to say, 25% before emphasis is put back to charging it up, then it is possible that you will arrive at the bottom of a long hill with only 75% of the battery charged. This might result in the boost running out of power before you get to the top of the hill (and you may only be
LiquidPixel999 5 months ago
Part 3 of 5: possible then it is beneficial for the battery to start its boost as near to fully charged as possible. Since the car cannot predict when ‘that big load’ is needed, the software biases the battery towards keeping the battery fully charged and ready to tackle that big job rather than reducing wear and tear by allowing the battery to discharge more (as you explained very well in the video). Another way
LiquidPixel999 5 months ago

Dear monkey. You do not want the battery to run down to zero. The more a battery cycles from full to empty, it's life expectancy decreases greatly. There are other problems with the Prius but none you can figure out.

You dont know shit about hybrids, do you?

Yeah did you know that running a Li-ION battery at almost always dead is the number one reason that LI-ION batteries malfunction short and catch fire. The manufacturer recommendations are 30 - 90% charge at all times to prevent damage to the cells. If you are using Lead Acid or Ni-Cd batteries then yes you want to do full charge and discharge cycles. Li-ION batteries on the other hand full charge and discharge cycles risks turning your Prius into a giant fireball.

The electric motor is NOT an assist, you are thinking of the system used on the Lexus LS cars. The vehicle will drive around using only electricity, as you should know. It looks like you own one. Toyota also doesn't claim that the Prius is an electric car. We all know it's a hybrid. Quit crying about "It's not an electric car", no shit.
colourbarsdjr 11 months ago
The Pious IS a gasoline/electric hybrid.
And, a full charge/discharge wears the battery out more than a small cycle so to gain a few years they limit the depth of the cycles, much like any car battery.
And, again, the Prius is NOT an electric car, you can not even plug it in to charge for a reason.
Arabhacks 11 months ago
It doesn't make any sense. You tell us "it doesn't drive like an electric car!" Neither does a

the thing about using battery more is that it will shorten the life span of the battery, i supposed you rather live with a bit more gas engine than having to replace the battery very often
discharging the battery to it's min and then charge it up very often hurts the battery more than having it almost full. plus Prius computer don't let you fill the battery to it's max cap. When the indicator is full, it's actually at around 80% max cap.

MrKnnknn 1 year ago 21
@MrKnnknn yea i keep hearing about how people are getting varying results and MPG...how does that work.....if they say it gets 50MPG, how does one get as much as 100MPG as i've heard people have gotten with the Prius?
whole27 6 months ago
@whole27 50MPG is what the EPA tests showed when they drove the vehicle. 100MPG is a bit pushing it, but I get 60MPG on a regular basis, all you have to do is drive 60mph instead of 70mph, drive SAFELY in the lane that is *next* to where a large truck drives, not in the same lane! And about 50yards back, this works for many cars, not only hybrids and is very safe.
MrKnnknn 6 months ago
@MrKnnknn wait, drive in the lane next to a big truck but 50 yards back? How does this help, to prevent wind resistance? So basically, drive as slow as possible at all times and you can extend the 50MPG to at least 60-70MPG. How many gallons does the Prius hold in the gas tank? 9?
whole27 6 months ago
@whole27 yes exactly, the lane next to the truck and about 50 yards back, the truck creates an air bubble or low pressure, gas mileage is all air friction at those speeds. One of the reasons the Prius gets good gas mileage is because of its low drag coefficient of 0.25, the lowest in the car industry, better than Ferrari or any sports car, another reason is its hybrid system which uses batteries charge, the batteries recharge when you decelerate or break or sometimes accelerate.
MrKnnknn 6 months ago
@whole27 The tank is almost 12+ gallons I believe. It takes some practice to get good mileage (55MPG or better) from the Prius, but if you drive normal you can easily get 45MPG.
MrKnnknn 6 months ago
@MrKnnknn i hate how the 2011 Prius's have the speedometer and monitor in the middle of the car! I know they are trying to change things up but that makes no sense. They might as well put the steering wheel in the back seat next! Also i hate the 3 additional modes they created. I don't want to constantly change the modes or have the modes available and then not use them which i would do. I really hope they change those things for the 2012 models, i won't buy it until they do
whole27 6 months ago
@whole27 Maybe you're assuming the speedometer is in the middle? The speedo is digital and can only be seen when the card turns on, it's right in front of you right under the windshield.
MrKnnknn 6 months ago
@MrKnnknn No that is the old Prius, the new ones have the speedo in the middle and yes it is digital. I loved the old Prius's speedo being right in front of you and right under the dash...i hope they go back to that in 2012

@MrKnnknn
1) You drive a Prius
2) You're fuel savings will be spent on replacing that battery.

starview1 1 year ago
I think there is a reason why Prius is designed as it is.
Here is why. An IC engine is most efficient at about 2/3 throttle. If the power to drive the car forward is less than the 2/3 throttle setting, efficiency will drop fast. There is a point, according to power mappings where it makes sense to store energy in the bat. ... hence the in and out to the bat.
There is technology in development that will make this all obsolete...including the volt.
There is no conspiracy by oil...

Floyd, Netherland EU
PBFloyd7 2 years ago
Addition: Ive heard from other local user that they can get 30 kilometer per liter, thats 70 MPG simply by switching to EV mode whenever the battery is full. No point charging it when its full, right? And as you mentioned: pointless charging/discharging the battery all the time. You can add your own EV button on a US version: look for calcar and EV button. After all, the car designed to be as fuel efficient as possible but apparently not allowed in the US. Good luck! Floyd

I own a 2007 Prius and I know you are right, but the Prius is still the most efficient car. I don't feel jerking in my Prius, so I don't know where you get that.

We'd LOVE it if the Prius had a bigger battery and could run on wall electric for a long distance.
liveoilfree 2 years ago
@liveoilfree Just intresting to note, that the prius actually runs more efficient if the battery is only used for assist. The prius was not ment to run long distances on the battery because you cant plug it in, the car has to charge the engine with the engine using a lot of gas. I dont know if you have ever heard of hypermiling, but I hypermile my prius everyday and I can get 65-80 mpg out of it. But I wish I didnt have to use the gas engine at all.
Keep up the good work!

@EcoWhale You can turn your P into a PEHV there is a group that will convert and do so for under $4k. GM, Ford or Chrysler have yet to do better. At least Toyota stepped up to the plate.
Eventhough it's not perfect, the first iteration of any car never is.
If you want to talk about a joke of a hybrid powertrain, look to GM's and Chrylser's gas-guzzling AHS2 in their trucks and SUVs.
moaski 2 years ago
I can't argue with that, you're correct. Toyota can only be criticized for not developing plug-in cars; Toyota is still miles ahead of poor GM (Ford bought the Prius technology).
liveoilfree 2 years ago
Isn't the new Prius supposed to be engineered for a future plug-in option in 2011 or 12? I thought I had read that somewhere?
moaski 2 years ago
The problem seems to be that Toyota can't use NiMH for plug-in cars, because of the settlement agreement with Chevron Oil Corp, which sued and won $30 million in Nov-Dec. 2002.
liveoilfree 2 years ago
I think you are wrong on this one. From what I've read the new third-generation Prius is going to have a plug-in version coming out late this year as a 2010 model.
Beyond that, Toyota has plans to have a full electric car in production by 2012.
These plans may change due to the current economic crisis, so we'll have to wait and see!
moaski 2 years ago
Toyota reputedly will build 500 LITHIUM plug-in Prii, but FLEET LEASE-ONLY, which means they are planning to crush them after the lease expires, and only a fraction in N. America. Their problem remains that they can't use the right battery due to the Chevron lawsuit and patent-squat.

Gasoline motor of Prius is Atkinson cicle, not Otto...it makes it to have better mkg at middle rpm instead at high rpm
ggtontoyono 2 years ago
Gentlemen... unfortunately you are all wrong ;) Prius as all other non-plug-in hybrids gets ALL of its energy from petrol. It only uses this energy much more effectively. How it does that? All the primary energy is contained in fuel, and the fuel gets burned(and energy extracted) in the goodoldfashined 4-cycle Otto engine. The batteries and electic motor let engine operate where it is most efficient e.g cruising at highway speeds. When you stop the engine stops as well so it doesn't burn any fue

toffiypl, you are correct on all except for it is a Atkinson cycle, NOT a Otto.

Actually, I'm relying on the EV group's expertise, which was superior to the Prius group, which was and is a bunch of dingbats.
liveoilfree 2 years ago
Deep cycling of the Prius battery shortens its life and they are very expensive. THAT is why the discharge is limited. If you knew anything about engineering you would realize that. The battery is designed to last 220K miles and this was not attainable with current battery technology without limiting the rate and depth of discharge.

blah blah blah -- Just drive the car and get 40 - 55 mpg and shut up. Try describing what happens inside a gas engine and car blah blah -- my Prius with 50k miles NEVER "jerks" -- you're a jerk! Drive it and shut up!!

A prius that is overfilled with oil will kick like a mule when the engine turns off. It can start like a feather turning over,
but you can feel it stop. That said, you can "hypermile" this car by coasting at strategic points. I can sometimes
coast/EV mode from the middle of the GWB all the way onto
the Degan Northbound. Trying to choose a PHEV kit as
I type...
pachai126 2 years ago
Oh by the way, is this the 2004 prius? or the older one. The newer on'es definitely an improvement as it has the "EV" function. have you tried that?
And the 2010 Prius is going to be even more awesome.

COMPLETE IGNORANCE. RIDICULOUS.
YOU HAVE NO FREAKING IDEA.
The Prius battery technology is a proven technology and IT WORKS. The Battery should NOT be made do go flat. By optimising the battery at a certain charge they INCREASE THE DURATION OF THE BATTERY, so it will last LONGER.
Besides, if it's so badly designed then explain why its so EFFING EFFICIENT despite this.
superantoy 2 years ago 2
Actually, the NiMH battery is much better at going from 100% to 0% than Lithium or Lead.
The NiMH battery in our Toyota RAV4-EV powers it more than 100 miles without ANY help from an oil-fired engine.

I have a prius, and the car sometimes does do whats shown in the video.. but im gettin 55mpg.. i cant complain.

This video is great. Toyota got it all wrong. I work for Chevron but I drive a prius, which gives me 60 mpg. I hate toyota.

i agree, they have gone and developed a 48mpg car, GOOD i say. boggles my mind how consumers allow GMC to sell their Sierra which gets 21mpg and they seem to advertise that its got fantastic fuel economy and is "40% more efficient"!? to what? a 5 tonne truck?

Ode left on a Prius clogging an Electric Vehicle "charging station":
I SEE THAT YOU'RE A HYBRID CAR
BUT ON YOUR BATTERY YOU WON'T GET FAR
YOU CAN'T PLUG IN, DON'T EVEN TRY
IT'S PLUG-ENVY, YOU CAN ONLY CRY

If you think it's a "Frankenstein monster", you shouldn't drive/buy it.
realrolfje 3 years ago 3
Toyota had two "tribes", the gasoholics and the RAV4-EV folks. The Prius was designed to avoid building a pure EV. Instead of being logical, like the GM VOLT, it's got a confused power train.
liveoilfree 3 years ago
The Prius was never meant to be an electric vehicle. EVs have not proven successful or practical on a large scale...YET.
Whoatemycheese 3 years ago
So after all of this I now know that the prius is a frankenstein monster...lol IT ISNT AN ELECTRIC CAR IT IS A HYBRID. A hybrid is the combination of two or more different things, aimed at achieving a particular objective or goal! Also I always thought a full battery was a good thing! Prius is awesome and totally under-priced. Read some reviews, prius wins. Always. Agreed?
