dude, nuclear already serves 20% of our electricty needs. i live near 5 plants, and its all good. tell the government to increase the nuclear plans to at least 50% (even if they have to locate them in canada-lol) and then let GM make the volt and also plug in hybrids are on the way
It is all about oil. Hey, you said focus too many times but you've saddled the right horse.
I just addressed this same point in Obama's Running Mate.
We need more of our own oil and we need it right now. Let's build more refineries, increse our drilling (Alaska and offshore) and lets build more pipelines. Supply and demand, he who controls the supply, controls the price.
My opinion: the private sector is already on its way to addressing this problem. Electric cars are already a reality (albeit on a small scale) - many automotive manufactures have created conventional gas cars that can run nearly 100 mpg. It would be naive to think that that change will happen over night -- we're already heading in the right direction, we just need some time.
Remember in WWII when fuel and electricity was rationed in this country? People were asked to recycle metals, rubber, etc. for the war effort. The whole country went through a lifestyle paradigm shift at the request of the leaders of the country to conserve and recycle. With the current war, we are required to pay alot for fuel and courteously go through the security checkpoint at the airport. We are gving up nothing.
Bravo!!! I totally agree! Oil is responsible for wars in the mid-east, the destruction of the environment, greed of US companies and so forth. Let's start the race to get rid of fossil fuels once and for all!
Thanks for the videos, midnighttutor. There is already a substitute for gas engines. No, not the fuel-cell that they're trying to make us believe is the technology of the future. It's NiMH(nickel metal hydride) batteries and lithium-based batteries.
I agree with you to a certain extent. I also believe we need to supply our own oil, we have a lot of it in Alaska and Utah. We need to be realistic and get it!
hey midnighttutor, you know most of our oil comes from canada, then mexico. then Venezuela. then arabia. remember when the brits couldn't get the oil from Iran in the 50's? the brits overthrew the democratic gov't and installed a dictator. why? because they nationalized thier oil.
I totally agree, and it bugs the hell out of me that Bush and Co. managed to throw $450+ billion dollars at a war in Iraq (that we didn't need to fight), when we KNEW we had a responsibility to ween ourselves off of oil. $450,000,000,000 would've bought a lot of research!
Great point. I think that the problem is less about the alternatives to oil and more about the economics of fazing out an industry that employs so many Americans. Oil companies and their investors won't go down without a fight. It will take some strong leadership from the top.
True forward thinking. I have yet to hear a politician utter the word "nanotechnology." If we are able to capture .0001% of the sunlight that reached the Earth, we could completely eliminate the need for fossil fuels.
As the Americans learned so painfully in Earth's final century, free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny. The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master

@kilabru There is a big difference between WWII wartime conditions and current US economic conditions, on many, many levels.
