2. Check the history of the "fairness doctrine" and why and when it died, then draw your own conclusions.
The reason the cover failed as satire/mockery is this: there were, and are to this day, people who *believe* this. They look at that cover and they see reality. They don't see it as satire; they see it as what will happen and what is happening. It is the sum of all of their fears manifest into a single image.
They buy the magazine just for the cover and put it on the wall, to remind themselves that Obama is evil. They show it to their friends as proof of Obama's crimes. And so on.
I think the left underestimates the intelligence of the American people and their potential. The left way over reacted and by doing so gave power to the racists. To try and ban or control political cartoons shows the left is no better than the right in their quest for power.

I think for satire it needs to be funny. Also the context is not obvious and so it works at perpetuating the stereo-type with many idiot voters. Obama said he didn't find it offensive personally. But The New Yorker very well knew what it was doing when it released this that voters were going to take it differently than "satire" and that a lot of the media would spin this against him. What would have made the cartoon easier to take and more obvious in its satire is if the image appeared in the thought balloon of another character such as an average white guy, a red neck, or a security mom. The reason the cover failed as satire/mockery is this: there were, and are to this day, people who *believe* this. They look at that cover and they see reality. They don't see it as satire; they see it as what will happen and what is happening. It is the sum of all of their fears manifest into a single image.
They buy the magazine just for the cover and put it on the wall, to remind themselves that Obama is evil. They show it to their friends as proof of Obama's crimes. And so on.

Some people might see it on a magazine rack and somehow take it as a statement which the new yorker is making, and not as a joke. Look how many people believe the government planned 9/11. What they really do is hold focus groups with ordinary Americans and try to find out what Americans hate the most. Then they ascribe it all to the good guys. It's no longer a serious political party.

Common sense rules the day again. I've always felt that when people say/do things, it's very important to look to see where they are coming from. But it seems such nuances go above most people's heads. That's the terrible thing about elections - you have to go out of your way to appeal to the stupidest people.
Either way, this is all good for the New Yorker, so more power to them, I guess.

The New Yorker can't heal the world with one magazine cover, but they can laugh about it a little. Some McCain supporters seem to be literally losing touch with reality.

Cenk, most of the time I agree with you and even in this scenario normally I would agree with you but the reason its so untasteful imo is the one point you don't give enough credit to at the end of this video. The ignorant people. The make up a big part of the electorate and still don't have a clear understanding of who Barack is and what he stands for. The media coverage of this cover (by left wing affiliates no less) does more damage to hurt that image he's trying to turn around.

What would have made the cartoon easier to take and more obvious in its satire is if the image appeared in the thought balloon of another character such as an average white guy, a red neck, or a security mom. That would have been better and not raised as many eyebrows. Of course it probably wouldn't have sold as many magazines.
