+ Respect, i've been playing the Smash Bros Series for about 10 years and just recently started looking up techniques after playing Brawl online. I had no clue that Smash Bros had so much more to it than meets the eye.
@juiey2 That's the hard part. You have to have fast reaction time. However, when you are at a very high percentage, more smash attacks will come out at you- that's when it's predictable. I don't think it's very important to DI when you are at a low percentage- I mean you can try. In my opinion, using any type of DI is important when you are at a high percentage or when you are being high by an attack that has multiple hits.. such as Pit's Angel Ring (hya ya ya ya!).
I really want to learn this tecniq (dont mind my spelling) but its to confusing, I mean like you should smash and tilt the control stick after being hit and everything. I cant seem to understand.
I don't know if you're going to check this, because I remember you saying you don't like to check the comments for this anymore, but on the off chance you should see this, just know that an old friend misses you and wanted to say hello.
@LordAlucard013 if you are diing diagonally he probablys means holding it an an angle up and left, do not however go up then left. Your simply hitting it in a diagonal direction like angling falcos forward tilt.
QCDI does require spinning the control stick( in a quarter circle) while getting hit however.
@TeitiTT would it be weird to say that do own both a classic and A game cube controller BUT i play better with the wii remote and nunchuck? xD.... Guess i should start using Gc again
@Kirbybboy If you really play better with the wii remote + nunchuk then just play it, level up your gameplay and try to play frequently with someone. I suggested the GC controller because it has the c-stick that is useful in many techniques (including DI).
Do you have to use DI when you are hit, or can you also use it directly after being hit.
I have a reflex to hit the L or R button after being hit. Is that fast enough (except that you need to use Momentum Canceling instead of L- or R pressing)?
@OrkTv Well, L or R when hit or launched actually screws up your DI quite a bit. For every frame you're air dodging, you're not DI'ng. Try not to press L or R at all when launched at high percentages. Instead, TDI and SDI while you're being hit/launched then do your best aerial (rule of thumb is back air or up air for most characters) and fast fall, just like the video says. :) But L/R more or less ruin your DI quite a bit. It's a bad habit.
So when you're hit far. I know you push the Control Stick in Up/Down or Left/Right Position and hold it there, but do you do the same for the Cstick?
because when I get hit, I hold the control stick and repeatedly hit the Cstick. So I'm asking, you do you hold BOTH sticks or just the control one and keep hitting the Cstick?
From what I've tested, fast-falling when doing horizontal momentum cancelling does nothing. For most characters, doing their quickest aerial (including airdodges) and then jumping toward the stage is their best option. The only purpose of the aerial is to allow you to jump sooner than normal.
@HGClark Maybe the problem is with your reaction time. If you don't have the reaction time to DI as you are hit or if you DI in the wrong direction (like to the left instead of up and to the left), your DI will be much less successful. This is the problem that I have lol. I don't know what your exact problem is, I'm just tryin' to help. :)
And also (this is pretty obvious) if your damage is too high, you just get launched too fast to survive lol.
@HGClark Ok lol that's what I'm trying to do now (straight up) because I have this thing where I keep holding left or right and it's really hard to fix it. Yeah, hitting a little bit more diagonally should be more effective, and make sure you do it as you are getting hit, not after you are hit and are flying towards the boundaries. And sometimes doing a midair jump helps to cancel even more momentum and get you going back towards the stage to continue fighting. Good luck with your DI. ;D
Can you please email me some tips and combos and techs for zelda. Zelda is really beastly and I love your zelda. My email is evazinski@ gmail.com but with no spaces thx
@isaacmb1 Is training mode he put the CPU as "Control" when you put a CPU to "Control" you need to plug in another control to Control the CPU -Training mode only-
In response to the description, Z canceling is/was not interchangeable with L canceling. The "L" is short for LAG, NOT THE BUTTON YOU PRESS. Therefore there is no R-canceling either.
This is not a bug. This is merely exploiting the physics system set in place for this game. Getting back to the stage is most certainly not a bug.
Any direction you hold while airborne, is considered DI.
wow, I didn't know that it's best to momentum cancel with your fastest aerial. What would be the best aerial to momentum cancel with wolf, olimar, and meta knight?
Arkivezero, I have a question that I'm hoping you could answer. In order to perform DI, do you have to do it right when you're hit, or can you do it around two seconds after you're hit?
Absolutely wonderful description during the video. It easily comprehendable. (You wouldn't believe the idiocy of some people who tried to describe DI to me in the past!)
i realize you asked this a month ago but anyways..
if you jump or perform a special after you fastfall, you gain all your vertical momentum you lost (from the fastfall) back. that is to say, you character flies upward for some freakish reason.
there's a video.... somewhere.... the point is don't do it :)
SDI and TDI are the exact same thing. the real term is SDI and not TDI. i used the terms TDI and SDI to help new players realize you can use both sticks to smash DI out of moves.
to SDI, repeatedly flick the control stick and/or cstick in the direction you want to go during hit lag.
this was really helpful. i had read forums and instructions on how to DI but never really got it down. seeing this was truly useful. and word for Link mains. it was tight to see dark link do all this cuz now i know exactly what it should look like.
when u say perform ur "FASTEST aerial" to do the movement cancel, do u mean do your fastest aerial attack or do an aerial as fast as possible? and i just noticed TDI = tap directional influence / total drama island lol
so so u tap the control stick AND c stickk in the direction u want to go? so a snake hits me on FD to the right, so i tap Cstick and Controll stick to the left n i live?
omg it all makes complete sense now. I really didn't know much about DI. I did realize momentum canceling, which was obvious. But I had been losing to many people because I would die early and they would magically survive. No more. Thanks for the guide it was very helpful.
i really like link, can you make more combo vids? and do you know about a good zero suit samus player or vids i would like to learn her combos, or maybe you can upload a vid...
im glad to know that there are a lot of link fans and not faggy toon shit link players lol...
dang i know it sorta know.. its hardd to do though, cuz if u don't do it on time, there is no dl.. but yeah, i know the side ones, the up ones are a bit harder.. thanks. to arkivezero and sasook
ok so once i hit, i hold up on the c-stick and towards the stage on the analong stick,, got it,, but right after that quickly, do i do mk's fastest aerial (up a) using the c-stick or using the analog stick up and the green button a,, one of the last doubts i have..
right before you get hit, hold up left/right on the control stick then press up on the cstick and down on the analog stick almost at the same time, then return the analog stick back to holding toward the stage
ok i have a really big question, lets just say the marth fsmash for example...,, so im meta, right. and marth smashes me to the right,, what do i do first, do i tap the control stick (the yellow stick) up really fast and hold left then really fast do down b because thats his fastest move.. or whats like the process step by step..
When you see Marth in his windup, immediately start holding up and towards the stage. DI is about prediction. Once you've been hit, spam MK's uair (his fastest aerial) to cancel your momentum, and while you're doing that, fast fall.
Down b could be pretty risky since it sends into a free fall animation, but I dunno, I'm not a MK main.
I apologise if this is a noob question, but I'm in the process of trying to get really good at Brawl and i just wanna confirm what is in the video :P
If I get hit by say marth's forward smash to the right of the stage, I would push up left on the control stick to do a TDI?
and, if in the same situation, for a momentum cancel, I would use my fastest air move, and hold down(I use lucas, what is his fastest air move is, i think its his forward a) to prevent me from dying at 100% damage?
if you get hit by marth's fsmash and you hold up left that would be normal DI
you can only SDI (TDI is the same thing as SDI, i just used this term to make it easier for newer people to differentiate between stick inputs) during hit lag, which only happens when you're immediately hit.
when in the air you then do your forward air and fast fall it. you don't hold down because once you tap down to fast fall you want to return the cstick back to DI'ing torward the stage
well, unfortunately, I use the Wii-mote/nunchuk to play, I personally find it better than the GC controller(even though i know there are many glitches and otherwise retarded and unfair things that be taken advantage of with the GC controller lol) so i dont have a c stick to get back to the stage with, so would i just hold the control stick to get back to the stage?
(and thanks btw, this is kinda helping me, even if it is hard to describe and use in an actual fight until i get used to it :P
So basicly do your fastest aeiral and point in the opposite direction?

Momentum canceling was not in Melee, nor SSB64.

I really want to know which way I have to DI to get out certain moves but I can find a list on smashboards, is there one?
cracker1204 2 years ago
The AiB Link boards are working on one. For now, you'll have to just experiment by yourself during matches.

omg it all makes complete sense now. I really didn't know much about DI. I did realize momentum canceling, which was obvious. But I had been losing to many people because I would die early and they would magically survive. No more. Thanks for the guide it was very helpful.

ok so once i hit, i hold up on the c-stick and towards the stage on the analong stick,, got it,, but right after that quickly, do i do mk's fastest aerial (up a) using the c-stick or using the analog stick up and the green button a,, one of the last doubts i have..
brawl313 2 years ago
right before you get hit, hold up left/right on the control stick then press up on the cstick and down on the analog stick almost at the same time, then return the analog stick back to holding toward the stage

Awesome, I'll have to check it out! I've only ever momentum canceled. It sure looks like it can save your butt sometimes though. Nice tutorial.

ok i have a really big question, lets just say the marth fsmash for example...,, so im meta, right. and marth smashes me to the right,, what do i do first, do i tap the control stick (the yellow stick) up really fast and hold left then really fast do down b because thats his fastest move.. or whats like the process step by step..
brawl313 2 years ago
When you see Marth in his windup, immediately start holding up and towards the stage. DI is about prediction. Once you've been hit, spam MK's uair (his fastest aerial) to cancel your momentum, and while you're doing that, fast fall.
Down b could be pretty risky since it sends into a free fall animation, but I dunno, I'm not a MK main.

its hard for me to work that in cuz right wen i get hit i air dodge its second nature to me so thats y

Yes, I do owe you. I saw this a while back and it helped me tremendously. I'll buy you a cake when I win my first major tourney (no jokez lol)
Jdietz43 2 years ago
great pointers thanks ill practice them, and the fastest areial is the back smash?
prime87 2 years ago
the fastest aerial is the one that has the quickest start up and least cool down. in link's case its his bair
arkivezero 2 years ago
I apologise if this is a noob question, but I'm in the process of trying to get really good at Brawl and i just wanna confirm what is in the video :P
If I get hit by say marth's forward smash to the right of the stage, I would push up left on the control stick to do a TDI?
and, if in the same situation, for a momentum cancel, I would use my fastest air move, and hold down(I use lucas, what is his fastest air move is, i think its his forward a) to prevent me from dying at 100% damage?
demonicfox232 2 years ago
if you get hit by marth's fsmash and you hold up left that would be normal DI
you can only SDI (TDI is the same thing as SDI, i just used this term to make it easier for newer people to differentiate between stick inputs) during hit lag, which only happens when you're immediately hit.
when in the air you then do your forward air and fast fall it. you don't hold down because once you tap down to fast fall you want to return the cstick back to DI'ing torward the stage
arkivezero 2 years ago
well, unfortunately, I use the Wii-mote/nunchuk to play, I personally find it better than the GC controller(even though i know there are many glitches and otherwise retarded and unfair things that be taken advantage of with the GC controller lol) so i dont have a c stick to get back to the stage with, so would i just hold the control stick to get back to the stage?
(and thanks btw, this is kinda helping me, even if it is hard to describe and use in an actual fight until i get used to it :P
