But even after one of the strongest earthquakes in history, a devastating tsunami and a hydrogen explosion that plant has still not undergone a full nuclear meltdown. That's really impressive. Nuclear power is still a very clean power and much better than coal or oil.

When the said nuclear plant was built in 70s, the local governor of Fukushima strongly opposed the idea but somehow he fell from the power and the successor promoted building the plant. There have been some chances to rethink of the safety of the plant, but they ignored the warnings.

After watching the TEPCO fiasco where the so-called "experts" had no back-up plan and were reduced to dropping water on the reactors with helicopters, I'm inclined not to believe the pro-nuclear folk anymore. @HelmetBlissta I understand that you are distressed that this plant is unsafe because of nuclear radiation but this is a nuclear plant that went through thousands of earthquakes through its forty years of commission. But even after one of the strongest earthquakes in history, a devastating tsunami and a hydrogen explosion that plant has still not undergone a full nuclear meltdown. That's really impressive. Nuclear power is still a very clean power and much better than coal or oil.

@Arwokid Look, it will only harm you if you get an extremely "acute" dosage of radiation in a short amount of time. Something on the order of 50ram (certain people are affected more than others based on age). Radiation is used to treat and kill cancer as well. It has been tested that people exposed to small amounts of radiation have less chance of getting cancer. 1 in 3 people will get cancer in either case, so to say someone died from cancer because they got exposed to radiation is not accurate

The thing is we need to improve reactors or we could try it with Thorium, which is suppose to be a lot safer and not have a run-away reaction in the case of the materials we use, at least not as great. Not only that but Fusion reactors (at least the first) are suppose to be online within 20-30 years, and will provide more energy without killing our landscape and maintenance. Wind and solar can't single handedly do it, currently...

@mikej5337 In every country, dirty politicians exist...who receive money from giant corporations and condone their wrong activity. When the said nuclear plant was built in 70s, the local governor of Fukushima strongly opposed the idea but somehow he fell from the power and the successor promoted building the plant. There have been some chances to rethink of the safety of the plant, but they ignored the warnings.
