Seriously. I think lightdm and this feature is really neat but there's one thing that bothers me. Why do ubuntu still use the classic ugly ubuntu borders/theme. Isn't it time to make it a little more modern and maybe a little transparent since the unity bar is transparent?
@maw88ify that list has been discontinued. Ubuntu still works on modern HP machines dumbass, there are very few video cards that are not compatible. 32bit doesn't handle ram over 4gb as fast but you can't notice a difference. You dont know what you're talking about and I can hardly understand your terrible grammar so I'm not going to keep arguing with you.
@completefanatic Check in your System Monitor, and tell me how much ram your 32bit Ubuntu is able to see. You're " going to keep arguing " , because you are loosing , and you are not going to make a video showing your spec's because you a full of crap.
@completefanatic If the list "has been discontinued" then why did they make it part of their new site lay-out ? Why didn't they just delete the out-dated pages ?
but, of course, there is still no working hibernation, you cannot easily change resolution so it matches external screen, the totally fucked-up package management /try to install something newer that it's in repo- you will have to compile or use some shady repos/ppas/ is still here... but, well, lightdm has got transitive wallpapers! hurrey!
@szymongruszczynski Your sole experience with Ubuntu does not set, fortunately, the standard.
If I were to sum up what Windows has caused in all its unreliability and driver problems, I wouldn't be done by tomorrow.
I'm honestly sorry Linux does not get along well with your hardware. However, most of the time, this is due to a culprit closed-source driver, or crappy ACPI implementation residing on your system.
@cumulus0007 I have a NEW "HP Pavilion HPE Intel Quad Core i5 8GB 1TB HD" , and Linux also doesn't work correctly on my hardware. Basically Linux only works on older , cheaper , out-dated hardware . And 64 bit Linux OS are just trash, and this mean you can't use more than 4GB of RAM , because you have to use 32bit.
@maw88ify Linux does not only work on older hardware. It is the most versatile OS, running on everything from PCs to set top boxes. The fact that you can't run it properly is most likely to do with your crappy video card drivers. Also, modern 32bit linux distros support up to 64GB of RAM because they utilise PAE out of the box. You don't know what you're talking about.
@completefanatic Linux 64bit is MORE buggy than 32bit EVERYONE knows this. Even Flash doesn't work correctly in 64bit. Linux has crappy video card drivers support, and that is a fact. On my old old junk computer Linux works great, but on my new computer higher end video card NOTHING works.Linux Bugs bugs bugs and more bugs.
@Ubuntu2000x Well according to Ubuntu's "hardware compatibility list" the Last Updated for HP drivers was 2009 ... This means new cards have not been added to list in over three years.
@maw88ify HP drivers? HP doesn't make video cards. All the video cards they use are either NVIDIA or ATI. You need drivers for your specific brand. Are you joking about making a video? I'm not going to spend my time doing that. I'm not sure why you don't believe me. I'm running a 3.4ghz quad core i7, ZOTAC Nvidia Geforce GT 250 and just upgraded to 12GB of RAM. Why would you think that Linux wouldn't work with one of these components? I run 32bit Ubuntu, flawlessly. No need for 64bit.
@completefanatic You tard I know that ... What I'm talking about is if you look at the Ubuntu's "hardware compatibility list" , and you click HP it will tell you the make , and model of all the HP/PC that have card they support. I DON'T believe , and the FACT you will not make a video only prove that you a full of CRAP.
@Ubuntu2000x "No need for 64bit." LOL are you joking? First 64 can run" large amounts of random access memory (RAM) more effectively than a 32-bit system. " ... This mean if you have 12GB of RAM as you claim than you computer is NOT running as effectively as it could with 64 bit ... This mean you're only able to use about 4 GB of your RAM.
@maw88ify You can't get Linux working on your high end PC, so that means Linux just doesn't work on high end PCs in general? Don't be so absurd. Just like any modern OS, it runs better on expensive hardware. My PC has better specs than those you listed, cost over 1000 and works perfectly with Ubuntu. You can encounter problems if your video card vendor does not properly support Linux and maintains closed source drivers. But this is not a problem for the vast majority. You're in the minority.
@completefanatic Make video showing me you have a better computer , and show me that you have 64bit Linux running smoothly with drives , and compiz working on it. Show your specs... ;)
@insperatus I think it's funny that retards call someone a troll when they are just tell them what needs to be fixed in Linux to make it better. @maw88ify In fact, Linux kernel developers and companies contributing to it are very quick on developing kernel infrastructures and drivers for their hardware, even when not yet released for the market.
Canonical has an update policy for stable releases that provides minor updates only, thus not pushing through all of the driver goods that are available. Did you know Linux offers graphics drivers for your laptop built-in, that in some cases outperform the Windows equivalents (see Phoronix)?

@WarriorIng64 Yes, a Virtual Machine is what is used. Remember that this is for 12.04, which people only use to test, which is most convenient to do so in VM.
@RyanScfc1 Not me...I too consider myself a 12.04 tester, but I run it on its own partition as my primary OS on my desktop (alongside 11.10 as a backup). A lot of issues, especially graphics-related ones, won't show up unless you are running on bare hardware and using it on a regular basis. @ndrdd23 You can find everything you need in the Ubuntu Software Center, which you can either search for in the dash or use from the launcher, if it's still pinned there. Just use the search box or filters provided, click Install on what you want, provide your password and away you go!
@WarriorIng64 thanks but ive already tryed that im trying to dowload itunes realplayer avg antivirus onlive steam zune etc it doesnt have none of those at the ubuntu download center its just hard to dowload a software on the web you have type in differant letters to have something installed and go to properties etc its really hard because for me im coming from windows and all i have to is go on the website and press download or install is there anyway i can do that on ubuntu
@ndrdd23 One, there is no need for antivirus programs on linux(but if you're concern install virus scanner via ubuntu software center). Two, itunes dont work unless you install an old version via wine. Three, VLC is a good substitute for realplayer. hopes this helps.
i@ndrdd23 Dude, wow dude. Stop trying to use windows software on a linux installation. Then, instead of searching the ubuntu software center for specific windows programs, search for the task you need to perform. Like 'antivirus' for instance. First you must get a clue however.
@autobot021 no, it makes *bling* *bling* and therefore attract typical mac users... its marketing... and overall, we stylish people appreciate that we do not have to set the lightDM wallpaper manually every time we change it.

They do these things because mac and windows did it before them, which makes them look rather desperate. Which again is not the image you want people to see when they think about ubuntu.
@blackoutworm I think you are completely wrong. Visual appeal is what linux has been missing most. You need visual appeal to get peopel to even consider using things. The flashy features don't make it appeal as much to people already on linux (especially those not willing to give Unity a chance) But they do highly matter to getting new users on the system.
@rekh127 Sure we need better designed icons, buttons and menus in linux. But it's not important. If a feature works better in windows or linux, people are gonna use that alternative regardless.
A computer is a tool. You don't buy a pc to have a nice looking screen.
There's a learning curve to almost everything in linux. So many things could have been easier if the developers could focus on them rather than stupid eye candy.
Just because something is "cool" and trendy, doesn't mean people love it

@blackoutworm I disagree with that, the most significant thing that Unity has brought to Ubuntu is a look that belongs in the year 2012. I loved Gnome 2 and how I could change everything easily in it, but after using Unity since 11.04 I feel like I'm a windows 8 user going back to Windows ME when I use 10.04 + Gnome 2. A smart, appealing look doesn't smell like desperation, it's professional, modern, fun and enjoyable to use. Unity + keyboard shortcuts = fast, easy, stylish.
@porterejohn It only belongs in the year 2012 because shiny transparency is where the money is right now. That doesn't mean it's good looking. Exactly what is so nice looking with Unity?
Everything is so freaking huge. The icons are so big, they look way too cartoony. All these lenses looks like freaking comic books with that animation and fullscreen windows. A kid would love unity. I don't want everything to be huge and shiny. I'm telling you. Unity is a freaking comic book (in my opinion).
@blackoutworm That's the problem with aesthetics - it's far to opinionated and no one is right or wrong. I love most of Unity - it makes amazing use of screen space which is great on my laptop, there are some lovely animations such as the shine effect on an icon when you minimise a window of that program (useless, but I like it). The dash is a mess at the minute though. And as you say, transparency is flavour of the month - but you have to keep up with trends - they're trends for a reason.
Seriously. I think lightdm and this feature is really neat but there's one thing that bothers me. Why do ubuntu still use the classic ugly ubuntu borders/theme. Isn't it time to make it a little more modern and maybe a little transparent since the unity bar is transparent?

Hibernation works fine if your hardware is not causing any conflicts. Has always worked fine for me.
Resolution changing is parcticularly easy, but massive work is underway to optimize handling external display devices and custom resolutions.
Installing software never than the repository's equivalent is as easy as downloading a .deb file and clicking it.
Just mediocre, I would call your trolling.

@cumulus0007
"hibernation works fine(..)"
thinkpad t61p- after hibernation- blank screen.
same as SB desktop computer.
under windows 7- works fine
"to optimize handling" - yeah, right. not to optimize, but to create from scratch
not surprisingly- win 7 works fine on both monitor (16x10 ratio) and tv (16x9).
"as easy as downloading .deb file" - unless there is none. or it depends from newer versions of packages- or olders.

@rekh127 Sure we need better designed icons, buttons and menus in linux. But it's not important. If a feature works better in windows or mac, people are gonna use that alternative instead.
A computer is just a tool. You don't buy a pc to have a nice looking screen.
There's a learning curve to almost everything in linux. So many things could have been easier if the developers could focus on Them rather than eye candy.
Just because something is trendy, does not mean people are gonna love it.
