the story after reach involves humans trying to find new strongholds and they encounter the halos, the covenant is trying to activate the halos as some form of great journey, while the main purpose of the halos is to contain the flood and/ or wipe out life in the galaxy the ring is placed in so that the flood cannot spread, the religious battle of the covenant and the battle for survival of the humans mix in with the parasitic flood to provide quite an interesting story in my opinion
