That means that the speedometer shown in the film was cosmetically altered to show the needle passing 85mph on the dial for dramatic tension effect.

@MrAutobogg no it never went past 85 on the speedometer, they had a digital one instead on top of the dashboard that would say 88.

@zupperm The US Spec cars all had 85mph speedo's as a compliance with gov't regulations in the early 80's The actual top speed is in the neighborhood of 130mph.

@knipdlo yeah right.... I've worked on and driven several - if they can wheeze up to 85 it's amazing. DeLoreans have a volvo 2.8L station wagon engine in the back (seriously) so the whole time travel thing....... nah won't get to 88mph
