  • 和蘭語, I know this is correct but I don't think many people use it, instead オランダ語 is more common.

  • hey brian i had a question about numbers... you know how in english when we're talking about the 1900's we dont say "one thousand nine hundred _____" for a year, but instead just "nineteen ___?" can this be done in japanese too?

  • LOVE THIS!

Love the clearer, whiter lighting - no more 1970s yellow haze!

Love the graphics! Will you be talking about kana and kanji in future episodes?

My teenage nephews recently expressed an interest in Nihongo, and I introduced them to your other channel just in time for them to learn about this new one. They like your vids so I think they may feel comfortable learning Japanese from you. Great job!

  • thanks for the video!!!! this is great!

  • If Nihon is Japanese for Japan, Where did Japan come from? why not just say Nihon?

  • @coolixm14

I actually have always wondered that...

I'm going to need to do some research...

  • @english2nihongo

chinese developed the name "nzyet-pwun-kwuk" (kwuk= country). and the japanese took this and tried to form a more simplified way of saying it and came up with nippon because they were unable to pronounce it. marco polo came recorded the land as "chipangu" derived from the chinese version to the best of his abilities. then the malaysians took his derivative and came up with "Japang". then traders brought the name to europe which then became the "Japan" we know today.

  • @coolixm14 It was first introduced to the west by Marco Polo as Cipangu which was how he interpreted the mandarin or maybe even wu pronunciation of 日本. The pronunciation of Cipangu, when it entered English sounds like Japan, so in English it became Japan.

  • Great stuff. Subbed.

By the way, anyone know why apple in Japanese, nowadays, is often written using katakana? It's not a loanword is it, when the original is 林檎 and read the same?

  • katakana is sometimes like using italics, if you want the word to stand out, you can write in katakana. however, i dont think i've ever seen ringo written in katakana, only hiragana..

  • Ah I see, thanks, didn't know that.

I think the last places I saw it was in the new Naruto game for the 360 and a walking-through-the-streets video of some city in Japan here on YouTube. Also if you search for "りんご" on Japanese Wikipedia, you're taken to a page about apples, with the title "リンゴ" instead O_o

  • I wouldn't worry too much. animal, fruit and plant names are often written in katakana. Don't ask me why though :)

  • Help.

I need to know words/phrases to communicate with the local fishermen.

  • Question..i know DOMO can mean both thanks & your welcome, but what is its meaning when you use it to introduce yourself(or just after you introduce yourself).

  • ダイチェン語

  • LOL

  • ドイツ語、フランス語、コリア語、中国語、オランダ語 I cheated and put up more since some of them were already or might have already been posted.

  • Since I realized that I only posted really easy go ending words that everyone could get, here's some other go ending words:

    熟語(じゅくご)= kanji compound

    敬語(けいご)= honorific

    露語(ろご)= Russian language

    団子(だんご)= Japanase dumpling

  • questions. i need to think of questions...what is some yokohama dialect? i`ve heard that old people there will often say be after a sentence like we kansai folks say wa. 何だべ!?

  • @reynoldsair

haha People from Yokohama have the same dialect as Tokyo people. Because the cities are only 30 minutes apart, you wouldn't be able to tell by accent where they were from.

  • i wish to get that reward. anyway, i just learned that there are many other "go" in japanese. all i know is nihongo & eigo. whoa. i'm a little nervous here. can't think of anything. are you just going to add the word "go"? like koreango? i'm not that familiar. btw, NO CHEATING PEOPLE! ^-^

  • I like your Idea !!

I think you are IDEA MAN! hahaha

    Thank you for uploading!

  • 中国語、韓国語,フランス語,タイ国語、ヒンドゥスターニー語、イタリア語、ペルシア語、広東語、官話、独語、ドイツ語、アイスランド語、ロシア語、露語、トルコ語、ギリシャ語、蘭語、オランダ語、ラテン語、アイルランド語、アラビア語。 That is all I can think of off the top of my head.

  • then, do all go's mean the same thing?

  • @mariakatrinamarie

There are many definitions for go. For instance "go" could mean 5.

But in this case, because there is a country or a language type before "go", it becomes a language.

    hope that helps!

  • oh so that depends on the usage then, like four can mean death. or something like that. Thanks^^

  • Actually...

"Shi" which is 4 can also mean death depending on the kanji lol

    good job haha

  • i think the same concept why superstitious Chinese folks does not want a 4 in their mobile no. because it is unlucky and is associated with death

  • how do you say hello nice to meet you

    and my name is.........

  • I like your idea, Brian sensei. I think this Japanese language class going to be a great class ever. I would recommend your class for anyone learning Japanese.
