I've had type 1 diabetes for 43 years & I've travelled from boiling glass & stainless steel syringes all the way through to insulin pens. Are insulin pumps harder to obtain in the UK & less available on the NHS. Does anyone know if that is actually true? I was very impressed with this thoughtful video & the standard of information given. Great approach to healthcare! I'm very interested in this delivery of insulin & the opportunity for better control. Will definitely discuss with specialist.
hi ive had type 1 for 5 years now and my nurse just introduced me to these pumos.iv been told that you are put on a waiting list on the NHS but the list is very long :( , on the good side tough you can buy it privatly (just the pump) then get the small components like the tubing and the injection part on prescriptions.the pump is a small cost in money whe you compare it to the waiting list on the NHS
Hi Kieron, do you mind letting me know which insulin pump you chose. I've an agreement from my Diabetes specialist that a pump is the way forward in my current circumstances (stress levels++++ & corresponding adrenaline levels = blood glucose all over the place & impossible to control easily). I agree at present whilst I get through what is going on. can have:- Animas 2020, Accu-Check Spirit or Mini Med (+ continuous blood glucose monitoring device). Thank you.
So i'm a 15 year old swede and my doctor wants me to try on a insulin pump after testing some new bloodsugar testing device that you put in your belly just like the insulin pump.
i really didn't enjoy injecting the tube so often and since i only did it about 5 times, though my doctor told me you get used to it. anyone who use insulin pumps. is it true that you do get used to injecting the tube? like, it doesn't really hurt anymore.
what do you use to hold it in place? i used some plastic square tape that you just put ontop but it fell off like everyday and i went trough loads in the 2-3 weeks i tried :/
but what about putting it in? how often do you have to change? does it hurt? does it affect using your body like bending over or running? have it ever happened that you've got extreme low blood sugar with this?
@shumped I think you have to change location every 3 days. Im just getting into this and Im a t1 since 20 now Im almost 40, my doctor never spoke to me about this pump..
I am a Brit, where insulin pump therapy is relatively new. I started on my MiniMed 6 weeks ago. It is a much better way to control diabetes than the old way. I can't imagine going back to the old way now!
No it doesn't hurt. I don't bother with the insertion devices, to my way of thinking they are more of a fiddle than they're worth. you might find them useful? someone who started on the pump has had an infection at an infusion sight. They kept their infusion in without changing for 6 days. It's important to follow the guidelines and put in a new one every 2-3 days.
twdobesh, I noticed that the Cozmo didn't show up in the video, but now the company that makes them is not going to anymore, so no one can get new ones anymore.
My husband just got his pump in Feb of 2008. He was told it would be life without limits. He was also told he could go swimming with the pump on. While on vacation visiting our son he caught a serious infection which left him septic and hospitalized on August 5, 2008. He underwent months of treatment. Along with having to have his pacemaker removed. Numerous infections kept happening due to the damage from original infection. After going from one place to anothe he died on 12/26/08.
Thank you teganpm, nice message. Despite your comment on how good it is, I fear insulin pump because I know how many things mechanical, electrical, can completely go awry. Plus being VERY active, what would happen if it smashed into a wall or something? I DREAD having it pump a couple hundred cc's into my mortal envelope. Besides, no insurance. Happy pumping, Sir Ringe
Wonderful. I got diabetes at the age of 5, grew up on Love Canal. I am now 46. I remember the large spikes, glass syringe, horrors of being in dreadful insulin shock, blood sugar near death, and no one knew what to do. I wish I could afford a pump! I am slim, trim, below ideal target weight, odd thing, people think I am about 30 years old. I tried Lantis once, that product nearly killed me. I got smashing fast lows, could scarce work the glucagon. I wish I had a pump.
I hope you can get a pump, its easier then it looks, you just take ONE insulin, it works when its suppose to, and no bloodsugar weird crap. Dropping fast, or anything doesn't happen, b/c you control the flow of your insulin !
Your insurance will and should cover it ? ? Talk to your doctor, work on it, you can get it,.
I hated shots and had the same problems as you, yes lantis was a nightmare, !
Im a type 1 diabetic and have been since I was 17 (I'm 26 now) and Im going to the animas one touch ping from taking 5-7 injections a day so it should be a nice change
Hey good luck with your pump,! its very easy once you get it, seems weird connected all the time ,I was scared at first 2, but you forget soon and becomes nothing! BELIEVE ME ! Just make sure you check bloodsugars when your suppose to and before you sleep !! and be good at counting carbs !
Awesome video! My son has T1 and wears the Deltec Cozmore insulin pump, so I was bit surprised that you didn't discuss it on this video, I saw it laying on the table.
better dial up 7000 carbs buddy... were going to eat a chair!!!
