can you send my 1 Big boy to switzerland. i want to restore this steamlokomotiv. the U.S. i think is not able to do this...... they have the worlds biggest steamlokomotiv but no one is running, thats a big shame.....
AWESOME!! Might need to tweak the emissions a bit, but what the hell...6000hp is gonna produce a bit of smoke....if the same load were put on trucks and hauled across the country I wonder how much pollution that would produce....great video, thanks for sharing :)
When I saw this video, my jaw almost hit the floor. What the HELL is that ridiculous music got to do with the greatest locomotives ever built? Ridiculous. Are you actually kidding me? This is absolutely insane. I guess the only people competent to make videos of our railroad treasures must be old enough to remember them! You MUST be kidding!
I personally perfer the it with the music and without the original Big Boy sound. (Though when I clicked on this video I was hoping for sound) I actually went to a video with the lyics for the music and it just didn't feel the same and thus I came back here and liked this video.
Beautiful machines, but today the EPA would shut then down in a second. Also, had to turn the sound off -- as far as I can tell, it had nothing to do with giant steam locomotives from the '40's and '50's. Thanks for uploading the video.
muy buenas fotos !!!!! por ahi lei que pesaba algo asi como 500.000 kg y media 40 metros o sea una animala de locomotora ... que espectaculo haberla visto andar no ???
steam is and will always be king. todays trains are no difrent than driving thw widow tweeds station wagon. is oil railroading? naw. coal and sweat and blood is railroading. back then it was better.
@mogges1 Mostly because they would be really expensive to restore and run. But you're right there. 3 of these beasts would be shaking everyone's house with that thunderous stack talk.
Its really sad watching this video and feeling that you were born in the wrong era.....I mean Steam trains like the Big Boy were very elegant and very powerful in terms of sound and feeling as though they were alive. I almost wish that all the railroads would have a steam program to remember their heritage....but that won't happen. I wish it would be practical for UP to bring back the Big Boy...I would give up almost anything to see her run again. Hell they could make me pay them to work on her.
great video, but one strong suggestion, please take down the music and just repeat the horn sounds threw the intir video. i mean common that girl singing is so not fitting to what we are looking at, it almost herts to hear it lol.
@starguard I did the video, do not worry if you do not ever want it down I can send you or you can download it from youtube ... Thank you for your comment, I hope that one day emerge again the BigBoy!
@juancarlos85i this is the locomotive tht got me into trains when i was 6 im 15 now i remember seeing shows about trains and tht was my favorite locomotive of all time
@chrisvk08 Well i think they chose it because Steam is a love story and it was sad to see the Big Boy the Y Class and The A class die and its gonna be ok with out them but we all know it wont be
I know ive comented on this video before but every time i see a Big Boy move all i can think of is LIKE A BOSS and i wonder what would happen to a car if it was hit by one of these things on a full head of steam
Is this REAL audio from an actual big boy or different steam loco. I NEED to know cause i want to record the whistle and put it in Auran's Trainz Railroad Simulator (trainz is the actual name of the game) and I want authentic sounds. If anyone knows any videos of a big boy and a "solid" (not much background noise),long whistle blast, LET ME KNOW!
@cbrhs819dc Thanks for your opinion, but at the beginning of the video is the original sound of the Big Boy and then use the music in the video, because there were comments and remove the sound and use the music.
@Cardinals525 You are talking out of your exhaust pipe! ! That would be over 550 freight cars, also, they were engineered with a margin of safety which meant they didn't break down at normal running speed. There are a lot of myths out there concerning these fabulous beasts, which were designed to haul 3500 tons up the Wahsatch hill without helpers then 60 mph on the flat, and yes, they hauled bigger tonnage, especially after 1945, when they ran through to Cheyenne, over Sherman Hill.
If you divide what you said into three parts, then you're right. However, if you say them all together, you're not right. "Big Boy" was built to be able to pull a 5.5 mile train on level track. He was never tested like that, but that's what he was built to 'theoretically' do. Also, "Big Boy" was built to reach 80 m.p.h., but I doubt they reached that on the mountains. Lastly, "Big Boy" mostly operated in the mountains, but I'm sure that's not where he went really fast.
One slight change to my last statement in my previous comment. "Big Boy" most operated in the mountains, but he was also used outside of the mountains. As far as I know, he just wasn't used outside of the mountains that frequently.

@Curious142 Actually, from what I understand is the exhaust steam has no environmental impact compared to diesels.
996TwinTurbo911 2 weeks ago
@996TwinTurbo911 That dark black stuff obviously isn't steam. It's coal or oil smoke. And it comes out of the smokestack, not the steamstack.

doesn't look to environmentally friendly :P

@mogges1 It's because they were so powerful that they didn't need any help from anyone/anything that the UP had to offer.

Could someone tell me what that is closing over the smoke stack at 2:17 and what it was used for.
stwright1977 9 months ago
@stwright1977
that thing was called either
smoke (stack) hood
smoke deflector
smoke stack cover
to prevent stack blast damage to tunnel linings
ie, only used when the loco was inside a tunnel.
