This man is just down to earth with some small planned humor on the side. I really enjoy his videos (seen 6 so far). Just a good fan of this mans garden videos.
@waylan3 I would plant them around halfway down in the bucket. Cover them with 2 inches of soil. As they grow, pour in soil to keep the stem buried. This will give you more potatoes. I wouldn't plant them closer than 8 inches from each other
What is a potato fork! Organic rocks! LOL I wasn't watching and I was listening. I had to double check... I guess I am not the sharpest potato fork in the shed? Youtube is 15 minutes now!
Awesome potato harvest..I wonder, do you ever eat your chickens? I know it's off topic, since you're a gardening blogger, not a butcher, but still. Those fresh eggs are really choice, but free range chicken isn't too shabby either.
Nice looking potato haul! I have a question about your planting beds. Are they raised beds or are they just more like framed off areas in your garden that you enrich with your compost? Thanks.
my god my potatoes were so small it was pointless to even grow them. this year has been a crappy year. Rumor has it that we are do for snow in the next few weeks. Our frost hit us sept4. my tomatoes didnt even go red this year and I didnt get any green peppers. I am so ready for gardening next year this year sucked so bad. give the raw potatoes to your dogs. My dogs love fresh potatoes.
Yay!!! I am looking forward to harvesting my idaho's but next year I plan on planting yukon Golds in a big pot. This was really helpful and fun, thanks for making the vid Ray! Iv all ready subscribed (i think) to your voodooGarden account... oh... and... IM LOOKIN AT YOUR WEEDS! Damn! Look at all those weeds! Oh, wait... those are my weeds... xD
We grow great rocks here too. Been harvesting them all year from our 2 small beds. Guess thats what happens when your home has been built on an old quarry. heehee.
@OS253 It's not that you can't. It's that refrigeration, same with your house AC unit, pulls moisture out of the air and likewise with your food too. Cool, dark and slightly humid places are best for root veggies. Someone recently suggested to me, wrapping rooters in a wet towel, when storing in the fridge would increase their longevity but I've not tried such.
@OS253 The low temps in the fridge will convert the starches in the potatoes to sugars. This will make the potato sweeter. It also can produce a chemical called acrylamide when the potatoes are cooked at high temps. Acrylamide is a cancer-causing chemical in lab animals and may cause cancer in humans.
@OS253 For the reasons Ray mentioned here, don't put RAW potatoes in the fridge. However, once they are cooked, the starch is completely different and you can safely stow them in the refrigerator for a few days or in the deep freeze (properly packaged, of course) for a few months. Happy spud-eating!!
Oh ya and hey could you maybe put the question into your weekand edition? maybe someone that has grown them can respond back :)
When do you harvest green zebra tomato's??? the ones i have still have not soften so i am having a difficult time picking them just yet because of it.
@Fleur696 Ok. thanks for the info. i have more than golf ball size but none a little yellow yet. i would have thought they would be ready by now. i will go out and pick and let them ripen in the window then. so i don't loose the harvest :) thanks
I didn't know not to wash them. good thing i ate them quickly eh? anyhow I was told by a guy at the community garden( he is from kenya) that you water the potato's only until they start to die off.. then don't water it at all... no water it helps the skins toughen up and makes the roots go deeper for water (more potato's... or so he told me. i'm going to try it next year. anyhow. looks like a great harvest. yummy... still don't knoe if those green zebra tomato's are done yet
Lucky you to have such dry soil! When I dug up mine it was completely muddy (it had been raining forever)... Uhh...And yes, your harvest looks really great too!
Irish Easter hahaah A wee Oirish Patater ! Wondering why potatoes are sold in clear plastic bags in America??? They are exposed to the light & turn green beneath the skin.....dumb ! Why is it not a good idea to put your potatoes in the fridge?
CraftFamilyMO 5 months ago
@CraftFamilyMO The starches will convert to sugars and start to break down. Store them in a cool basement or lower cabinet

Do you wash the potatoes before you put them up for the week, or leave them alone.
My wife never let the potatoes grow skin, she get them out of the ground and washes them and cooks them....lol
jude1c9v 1 year ago
@jude1c9v Never wash them or rinse them if you plan to store them. As far as using them right away, definitely wash them prior to using.
