it seems like a straight freak out at the end but it's oddly fun to listen to.. perhaps it sums up the frustration of the era... exhilarating and pleasurable freedom but no patience for much structure. I love the bit with davy jones singing at the end.. the last 5 mins is wild but kind of interesting. interesting to see nesmith's son and ahmet zappa collaborating on tv themes now!!! also Davy Jones was said to be a good drummer and sometimes played them in concert.
Listen to the Band ending is Still Amazing. I still find it hard to believe the this aired on NBC in 1969. I would have paid to see the look on my Grandparents faces if the tuned in by accident ;-)
@AarHan3 He left right after the recording of California Here It Comes (shown int he credits of 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee), at about 10pm. If I can remember, they recorded that song in November 1968. So, Peter was gone for about 6 months. They still made some pretty damn good music afterwards.
Want to hear California Here It Comes? Look up "33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee credits"
all you need to know is that this is great stuff by talented people - the top of stuff Lady Gaga THINKS she is doing or and not even getting close to.
@rjpcambridge jesus christ lady gaga? really? give that girl her props she is madd talented--- to compare her to this is crazy...........im a monkees fan too but your on crack if u think that girl isint a HUGE talent
Poor Monkees could never distance themselves from the kiddie image and stunts like this merely alienated their fans and never earned them the bona fides as legitimate musicians for which they were searching. And Davey Jones, couldn't they teach him one instrument?
I borrowed the 33 1/3 revolutions per monkee disc from my friend, and when I saw this part, I almost fainted...I really didn't know what to think of it. I still like it, though! Very creative!
Hey, i didn't expect this version to go into the direction that it did....and add to that the presence of Brian Auger and Julie Driscoll! This one really took me by surprise! It's the Monkees' Revolution 9!
It was sad, though, that this was the last thing Pete did before he left the band. I would say that they did well to break from the show and be the band they always wanted to be...that they always were, but without Pete, they were not complete.

wait, I'm confused by the comments. Did Lady Gaga cover this song or something? What does this have to do with Lady Gaga?

By this wasn't filmed in 1968. The hit song Listen To The Band was issued in the summer of 1969. So this must have been filmed after that time.

Guitar stacks were a very recent invention in 1968! Very nice vintage amp that Mike has there.

@casperguylkn The guitar's playing through a fender twin, not the m-stack.

Great song, love Mike's vocals. Gets a bit trippy and psychadelic for me halfway through - very 60s!

For all the naysayers-this one proves that they all could perform---Though trippy as it may be, It's still an amazing song
