  • so wonderful!!! surpassing our Jussi!

  • Great, great, great singer! That lil' Jew could sure sing pretty! ;) (I write that as a short singing Jew, by the way.)

  • @Cantormatis It's still not funny, especially when we consider his terrible end at the hands of the NAZIS.

  • Joseph Schmidt is a Classic Example of the "Art of Bel Canto." Nothing and no one can be heard on the operatic stage today that can match his beautiful singing.

  • A truly beautiful voice. Thank you for this video.

  • The song is by Arturo Buzzi-Pescia.

  • Tosti did NOT write this song! PLEASE stop spreading this falsehood!

  • AT LAST! a video by Onegin65 that I CAN watch! All others are unavailable!!

On a lighter note, :) what a fantastic singer! Thanks a lot for sharing yet another invaluable video.

  • I have never forgiven the Swiss government for what they did to this truly great artist. And I never shall!

  • Amazing voice, and in my opinion he sounds better than Caruso!

  • Meltingly beautiful.

The Nazis didn't kill him! The 'neutral' Swiss did! And they were never brought to justice. At least the Nazi criminals were!

  • Hrashq!

  • beeeyooteeful

  • He did not sound nasal at all his voice was open and glorious, great high notes, great singer.

  • What a voice!

  • Europe died with Auschwitz.

We assassinated 6 million Jews in order to end up bringing in 20 million Muslims!

We burnt in Auschwitz the culture, intelligence and power to create.Instead We opened its doors to 20 million Muslims. We exchanged culture with fanaticism, the capacity to create with the will to destroy, the wisdom with the superstition.

We have exchanged the Jews who even under the worst possible conditions have always looked for a better peaceful world, for the suicide bomber.

  • Thank(sic) the Nazis and their ignorance and cruelty for the early dermise of this wonderful singer. He might not have been a great operatic stage performer(he was 5' 3")-that might have been a problem, but God his was one of the most beautiful voices ever to sing a note!

  • He was 4'10", pocket tenor.

  • This song most definitely is NOT by Tosti! I know, because I have the memorable disc of it recorded by the unforgettable Claudia Muzio; it was composed by Buzzi-Peccia. That being said, I was quite taken by Schmidt's charming performance.

  • Right, it's from Buzzi-Peccia ! Schmidt's tragic life can teach this world a lesson !

  • Silk and honey

  • Because he knew that you would once listen to him. And he wanted to make you angry. This is the revenge of Joseph Schmidt on narrow thinking and listening.

  • he is singing in italian....and its not "nasal" at all,it is "bel-canto" in its absolute perfection.i adore him,his is my favorite.

  • Thank you so much Onegin. You and Joseph Schmidt make the evening vanish...

  • I like the song and his voice.

    Thank you.

  • Joseph Schmidt was the BEST SINGER my family of a long line of chazzans and musicians ever produced!

    If only...

  • When looking for this song, I discovered that it was not written by Tosti. It was actually composed by Arturo Buzzi-Peccia. He was Italian born and later in his life moved to America. It is a beautiful piece sung by a fantastic artist.

  • I tried finding this song to learn it and discovered that the movie was wrong. This song is not written by Tosti, but by Arturo Buzzi-Peccia. He was Italian born and later in his life he moved to America. It's such a gorgeous song done by a wonderful artist.

  • I would like to add that every instrumentalist or singer should be given this as an example of supreme phrasing...it is a miracle

  • It is the real Jewish singing: laugh through tears.

He definetely felt his untimely death. My mind knows he is dead, my heard refuses do accept it.

  • so paintful!!!i love it

  • This was the music of my father,i learned to love this beautiful music and wonderful voice. You can stil hear the pain of his love after so many years.

  • Wonderful and unique! I love that profound longing, warmth of timbre, and subtle inflections that few great singers of Jewish tradition adopted from the cantorial art. Tucker also had that.

  • I love this voice...so much!

  • A great, great singer! !

  • Takes one's breath away

  • Really great!!

  • There are those voices that, when we hear them, we know they are the greatest. We forget them, but we know they're there. Josef Schmidt is just such a voice. He is one of the titans.

  • oh my God, beautiful...

  • He must have known yearning and heart-aching. His voice comes out from the bottom of his heart...-
