I'm swedish and I like both English comedy and American comedy, I don't care much for the Scottish and Welsh comedy (no offence just don't like it much) the English are "better" than the Scotts and the Welsh when it comes to comedy IMHO.
im also american and i highly recommend (if you havent heard of it) An idiot Abroad, funny as hell and will make you rethink who the funniest man in England is....Karl Pilkington FTW!
@METALGEARSOL1D Oh - you must want everything spelled out for you. Even then, you'll need a laught track to tell you when the jokes are. Americans are the reason we have to watch movies based on 70s TV series - lots of explosions, no plot!
Chris Rock is a great observer of human life as is Ricky Gervais. Both come from different cultures and are very funny in their own unique way. I love them both for different reasons and I am English born.
The English sense of humour is special, I'm familiar with the Scottish and Welsh humour/comedy also, but the English are hard to "beat". American humour is OK but I prefer the English sense/style of humour of Ricky Gervais.
And I say English. Not "British", because "British" means that the Scottish and Welsh are included, they have their very own distinctive humour which differs from that of the English, they deserve to be recognized as well.
I love Chris Rock I love Ricky Gervais. American Humor is good British Humor is good and Canadian Humor is always forgotten. (Im american btw). Everyone always talks about British Humor or American Humor what about the cannucks? Man they gave us some GREAT comedians.
They were discussing this in the Talking Funny special too--how Chris Rock's biggest fear is that people don't pay attention or they miss the joke. He relies very heavily on emphasis in his delivery.
Gervais is the master of that subtle British humor. And judging from his wonderfully generous and often violent laughter, we know he's really holding it back, that this is a technique.
Their two methods are equally powerful if you ask me.
Chris Rock is acting all humble. It`s kind of the unwritten code that comedians go by when they respect each other. I suspect there`s another video out there with Ricky Gervais saying how he admires Chris Rock`s energy. And the Talking Funny show proves it. Chris Rock comes up with one of the best oneliners ever. On youtube Talking Funny Sittin on Dock of Bay
wow.....Chris Rock is actually very self aware. That's amazing! I love hearing someone talented talk about someone else and so genuinely admiring them.
Good point here by chris rock. When I watched Ricky Gervais' golden globes 2011 hosting, I noticed just how little he tried to push a joke. He always had a great fallback when the crowd didn't laugh at his (seemingly) first punchline, and his delivery was not over the top.
I am english and I don’t see why there must be a constant competition between our comedy (our english sense of humour) and the american comedy (their sense of humour) why? They reflect two different cultures. People would be better off enjoying the differences rather than argue over which one is best.
Do people really do that? I find Russian comedy the funniest. Next would be those hilarious fukkers from Pakistan and Iran. Also, the Congo has to be one of the last tapped pools for comedic genius.
@Wallonische amen. Im american and i think gervais is funnier than most american comedians. I love Simon Peg. I wish i could get ahold of Spaced. I heard that was good. One thing i dont get about british humor is Monty Python and the whole crossdressing thing. But im sure brits look at larry the cable guy and think what the fuck.
@Wallonische Agreed, besides one day we will have 1 universal language for 100% necessary reasons, and we will be on other planets, then we will bitch about comedy from mars, and comedy from people on the moon :D
@Wallonische I agree. I love comedy and appreciate shows from the US and Britain. The same is true for most drama. I don't get the comments of people saying otherwise. People must like British shows or else there would be no such thing as BBC America.
@Wallonische I'm Dutch, but unfortunatly the Dutch comedy is much the same as the American version. I love British comedy, simply because it is dry and gentle, yet brutal and corny, while the American comedy is more concervative, they try to behave, and if there's one thing you shouldn't do in comedy, it is to hold back.
You say it's culture, I say it's American to be carefull not to step on to many toes unlike the Brittish.
@Wallonische Agreed, I'm from the US, and I love British Comedy and American Comedy, they are 2 complete different types of comedy, and both absolutely hilarious in their own ways.
most british people i know (myself included) who actually sat down and watched the american office really enjoyed it. Some slag it off without even seeing it because they're too thick/proud/narrowminded
@youngice6004 True and I do think Ricky's concepts for both sitcoms and that cartoon thing are really clever and original but I relate to Larry's stuff much, much more. So maybe there is no better. I laugh the most watching Larry's stuff (especially Curb ), I cringe the most watching Extras and The Office.. And then laugh later :-)
Chris is in the sequel to the movie "2Days in Paris". Julie Delphy cast him as her love interest. I have lots of faith that Julie wrote their dialogue to have lots of dry, humorous banter. Looking forward to seeing that side of Chris.
It's irritating to see so many fucking idiots on this site bitching about who is better...Look, Chris rock is analyzing Ricky Gervais....TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT COMICS, Rock is in awe, in complete amazement on how brilliant one man can be and here you all are, still bitching. Grow up.
@Tunainthebrine79 agreed, the americans just didnt hit the mark with their version, they cant do that subtle humour like the brits. Original Office series rocked.
@Soundgarden8497 I dont find Ricky Gervais funny, even in the slightest. Boring, dull, slobish. Infact its funny, because how Chris described himself is exactly how Ricky is, only on a quieter more subdued version. And Im from NZ so its not American bias here, and was brought up on the classics; Dads Army, Father Ted, Faulty Towers, Monthy Python, Blackadder etc.
Ricky Gervais is boring, but thats only my opinion. Im sure others find him hilarious, which is cool.
@organikness i honestly think ricky is a super narcissistic and grotesquely arrogant cunt, but despite that i still laugh at what he says. good for him
Chris Rock is a much MUCH better comedian than Gervais. Not to say Gervais is bad anything, but Rock is a pro and Gervais is someone that gets to do it because of his TV shows
it was very brave of chris to admit that his lowbrow outbursts stem from insecurity and low self esteem; it's so common in american comics yet they all think its genuine
@MIS315 It's more than that, though. American comedy tends to be more musical than British comedy (which isn't a good or a bad thing), so jokes are more often punctuated in the United States with different kinds of emphasis (like screaming). It's kind of like, there's British comedy, which moves at its own pace, and then American comedy, which is a lot like boxing. You set up a joke and then you slam it down the audience's throat.
I only really caught on to Chris Rock and his stand up recently. I always knew who he was, but wasn't what you would call a fan. I did laugh out loud at some of his stand up. I have loved Ricky Gervais from the moment I first saw The Office about 5 or 6 years ago. Hearing Chris say this about Ricky, has made him go up several BIG notches in my book. Not that that matters... But just sayin...
Gervais only has to 'throw them away', because his audience is smart enough, and the material good enough, to allow for this. The louder, and more manic the comic, generally the weaker the material. Look at Robin Williams; all that energy and yet so seldom funny.
@funnygames1 You wouldn't say that if you've seen Robin Williams' stand-up. He has some classic bits. Even from his recent specials. His bit on the invention of golf is classic.
Chris Rock man...something about him makes me want to punch him...for a guy cutting people up with his comments and in your face n all this shit, his mimicry is fucking weird and insecure in interviews and the shit he sais from the top of his head, obviously trying to be funny and have some clever remark in conversations is just downright stupid and completely out of place many times...maeh
@adamvandyke2 haha yeah. i just thought yelling your jokes was a way to make your jokes seem funnier because your so animated and upbeat, not because you have a low self of steam. my eyes have been opened lol.
@forseliz - you ARE aware that was a joke right? this was a bit they did together - Steve Carrel didn't bring his Emmy to the show because he needed something to hold on to. It was a joke they did together.
since WHEN is ricky gervais humor subtle ??? i agreee hes a fantastic comedian ... but what he did in some times ... its just cruel ... i dont ofcource mean his goes at religion ... cos they are accurate ... well one example maybe could be that ricky just harressed steve carrel .... i think that was tyooooooo cruel
you sir are a moron. if you didn't realize that Steve Carell was "in" on the joke, then how can we expect you to understand the concept of comedic subtlety? Did you really think Carell "just happened" to bring the Emmy with him from the previous year, and hid it under his seat???? That didn't lead to believe it was a planned thing? Dense.
Why do people always have to go on about american v's british comedy. Change the record we've all heard it a thousand times.
Good comedy is good comedy get over it, and funny people are funny people no matter where you go in the world.. go out and live a little and learn this. I'm british and these two are a perfect example.
the whole UK vs. US argument is abit stale Id agree with you. I love both types, americans are better at the sitcom style, english are better at offbeat/droll humour. Neither one is better than the other theyre just different. The problems start happening when either side try imiate the others style (eg US office).
Well, if you enjoy PC humor written by PC hollywood writers for a PC crowd then Friends maybe your cup of tea. Humor should push the limits. A cutting edge show like Gervais' Office crushes an unorginal show like Friends everytime. Just because a couple of pretty faces are spouting out cheeseball lines doesn't make it funny.

since WHEN is ricky gervais humor subtle ??? i agreee hes a fantastic comedian ... but what he did in some times ... its just cruel ... i dont ofcource mean his goes at religion ... cos they are accurate ... well one example maybe could be that ricky just harressed steve carrel .... i think that was tyooooooo cruel
Forseliz 2 years ago
It is very subtle. More-so in Extras and the Office than his stand-up stuff.

@Forseliz
you sir are a moron. if you didn't realize that Steve Carell was "in" on the joke, then how can we expect you to understand the concept of comedic subtlety? Did you really think Carell "just happened" to bring the Emmy with him from the previous year, and hid it under his seat???? That didn't lead to believe it was a planned thing? Dense.
hardtruthsin08 2 years ago 9
well put ... anyways ... well i was wrong and i apologize for it ... are you happy ? sir ?

it was scripted stupid

Friends was formulaic for episode 1 and 10 seasons of predictability
worst sitcom that lasted 10 years
Sorcoral 2 years ago
The early seasons were good but they gradually got worse. I think they had a change of writers or something.

The problems start happening when either side try imiate the others style (eg US office).
scotty686 2 years ago
i don't know of any funny american sit coms so i would disagree that they are better at them.

Friends? One of the best sitcoms of all time? I'm English as well.

friends wasn't laugh out loud funny, especially compared to the likes of black adder or better yet the inbetweeners

It was to me and millions others ;). Black adder is good however the inbetweeners doesn't compare to either. No way!

You're humiliating yourself. Friends is a funny sitcom? You don't know what real comedy is.
whb786 2 years ago
Friends IS a funny sitcom. It's hilarious and really well written. Ricky Gervais and Chris Rock are also hilarious.
boydegg 2 years ago
Well, if you enjoy PC humor written by PC hollywood writers for a PC crowd then Friends maybe your cup of tea. Humor should push the limits. A cutting edge show like Gervais' Office crushes an unorginal show like Friends everytime. Just because a couple of pretty faces are spouting out cheeseball lines doesn't make it funny.
whb786 2 years ago
I feel lucky that I can enjoy cutting edge comedy as well as more mainstream comedy. Double the comedy for me. Yay!
boydegg 2 years ago 4
95 percent of mainstream network comedy is dogshit. Friends included. I'm sorry. I know friends is garbage and I won't be convinced otherwise
