@VisualK3i94 It's a graphite marver for shaping the hot glass. Hot glass doesn't stick to graphite. Mounting it on the torch puts it closer to the flame and easier to access.
have you ever seen a midrange in red? I wont say how but i do believe i have a RED MAX prototype thats design is somewhat in between the midrange and redmax
@Burritoast No, I haven't. But this doesn't surprise me since they went red with the Mega Minor torch. You may have the Mega Midrange or something, I've heard that Nortel changed ownership awhile back.
maybe but i dont think so... imagine a redmax with no vent ports. a solid body like a mid-range. however it has a circular jet port like the redmax and has a red premix as well
Thanks for the Demo, I just ordered this torch and a friend has it also. I like the versatility of it, I plan on making some big a** honkin' beads so I need the larger flame! Thank you for all of your videos!
Have recently stumbled across your amazing instructional videos. Thank you so much for all of your time & effort. I have the same torch & have mostly until now used soft glass (& hence have only sparked up the minor). You mention you still use the minor for most of your work. I was under the impression I had to use the midrange for anything boro. How do you decipher when to use which torch? Thanks again for your videos. Keep up the great work!
Thanks1 The Nortel Minor will work boro JUST fine. You can work up to 1/2 inch rod and 1 inch tubing with it. Beyond that a midrange size flame would be preferable. Basically, if you need to heat larger masses of glass or do so faster then a larger flame is needed.
That's what I thought, but when I started a piece with the boro it was way too slow to get a gather (with the larger flame as well). It must be that my fancy oxygen concentrator does not push enough oxygen to get that powerful flame... bummer. Is this why you use a tank of oxygen instead of a concentrator? P.S. have watched many of your videos now & I am hooked! Thanks so much for posting your videos.
Due to the higher working temperature of boro over soft glass it will naturally take a little longer then you are used to but most of it probably is the oxycon. I tried one once and it just couldn't keep up with the demand even on a minor. I'm pretty much hooked on bottles. I don't do enough to justify liquid oxygen. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos!
this torch os wht im looking at now here in the UK. I was savingfor a cheetah, but nowthe place i was going to et it from hasnt got them anymore so this is what im saving for now as a 1st torch..
Six of one, half a dozen of the other. NG and propane produce about the same amount of heat. I get better oxidizing flames with propane but that could just be me. I use NG almost exclusively now unless I'm setting up away from home just for the convenience of not having to mess with tanks,
hey thanks for posting this, I think its awsome that we have managed to get a torch demo up for almost every one of the major torches out there. I really hope I can get to my friends studio this week to demo several carlisle torches.
I think it's great that you, sunfireglass, and I can give those interested useful information so they can make an informed choice before they spend their hard earned money on a torch. My thanks goes out to you too!
oh yea another thing i was gonna ask was about the jar of water u have next to u i see people always have some water near by for access glass im guessin could u explain more about that also thanks alot.
What is that L-shaped thingy on top of the torch?

how long does a bottle of oxygen last ya?
fourpointohh 11 months ago
@fourpointohh I suppose that depends on what I'm making and how much I'm working. A week to a couple of months.

What do you think is the better gas to use with this torch, natural gas or propane?

I use the jar of water to dispose of bits of waste glass. Keeps the work area clean. Not much to it :-)
