I found this album and was taken by its brilliance and have a tradition of always listening to it on christmas eve, very good drumming. I have been drumming for 5 months and i hope to play some tull tunes soon.
Hello .I'm in france,my name is yves,i'm the drummer from "39noname" and big fan of jethro tull.Congratulations wondurfull work on "Songs from the wood."Thank you.
@39noname Pas de problème pour votre anglais, vous avez juste à m'écrire en français! ;-) Merci beaucoup pour vos commentaires, et continuez votre bon travail avec votre groupe!
not very good. botched up a few times and what was up with the intro? its decent don't get me wrong but i would have practiced more before putting a final product on youtube.
Wow, you did a very nice job here! As a BIG Jethro Tull fan, and HUGE Barriemore Barlow fan, this is very good indeed. That you managed this without a double bass pedal/drum is beyond me. Try Heavy Horses? :D
Very nice. Not may try to tackle Jethro Tull, especially the Barlow stuff. I played in a Tull Tribute Band in the early 80's, and can appreciate how easy you made that look. Well done man!
I recall a comment on perhaps your Cinema Show video that you need to soften your bass pedal hits - could you try putting a small pad on the bass drum or pedal?...I have e-drums, and I use ~1/2" pads on some triggers without any noticeable reduction of response or volume...
Thank you very much for your comments! If you are interested in listening to more J-Tull, I heartily recommend to start with the album this song is taken from, "Songs From The Wood"; it's their more representative and consistent yet accessible, IMHO. About the kick pad, it's just a small part of the problem, all the kit is noisy, really. I'm looking forward to buy an Auralex Hoverpad 64 someday.
Great job (lots of parts to learn, etc.)...I was never a super avid JTull fan - not that I did not like his music (I did), but I just never took the time to listen to songs like this...you have inspired me to seek out more JTull music...I definitely like Anderson's voice...and at least some of his songs remind me of medieval England (I'm a Medievoeurophile and an Anglophile)...
Not only are they perfectly suitable for everyday playing, but they are actually better than a-kits for many things. Can you play with headphones in an apartment on an a-kit? Can you play old and new sounds, piano sounds or sound effects on your toms? Can you fix or quantize notes one by one in your recorded performance? ... And I could go on like that. :-)
Although I mostly play guitar, I am currently enjoying the e-drums too. Is that kit a Roland?
About playing by heart, in my own case it's the only way I "can" do it, since putting it all into sheets is too huge a work for me. So I have to get satisfied just when I hit the kick or the splash in the right time... no further requirements.
Thx a lot for your input, keep doing so well and keep resembling Gary Novak, for bigger pleasure :-)
No, my kit is a Yamaha DTXtreme IIs; you can check out my user profile for more information on it.
I am in the same situation as you about learning, I cannot read music either! Besides, it takes way too long before gratification; I much rather sit behind the kit and listen repeatedly until I sound as close to the song as possible!
Thank you again for watching, and I really laughed about your Gary Novak comparison, I take it as a compliment! :-D
I know I am a rare case, but believe this: playing guitar for my whole life, I learnt the exciting drum parts of my favourite songs by repeated listening -of course- but, not having a drum kit, I used my teeth, making different jaw movements to achieve different sounds (kick, snare, cymbals) which only me could hear... thank God! LOL
!!! Would you believe it if I told you that I do the exact same thing with my teeth? I even do the cymbal sounds with my breathing! Damn, I thought I was the only freak in the world who did that, you are the first one I meet with this incredible habit! I don't know if I should be comforted or if we should worry! :-P
This is really great! Of course! The well-known breathing technique for the cymbal(s) emulation! And what about the tongue acting as an air-flow regulator to get the hi-hat pedal nuances? LOL... I am truly enjoying your post, and I am afraid if we are two freaks already in one thread, there must be other few thousands out there... This one to keep!
P.S.: if you ever thought about using your mouth tricks to trigger a MIDI drum device or something then we are real twins in serious illness
First of all to say you're doing an incredible work. Most Tull and Genesis from the 70's are a hell to get. I always wonder how the heck they composed that stuff and showed it all to other members to learn. ¿Were they all experts in music writing and reading? ¿Or did they record every single idea for the whole "A Passion Play"?...
Returning to your playing, it seems you placed some special sounds on the rims, didn't you? Or you have some way to swap the patches when it's needed?
To my amazement (and probably yours), Ian Anderson wrote his music down, at least some of his songs; search for "jethro tull velvet green" on Google Images, you'll see the sheet music for Velvet Green!
Yes there are special sounds on the rims, each pad (snare and toms) has two zones on its rim. There are various ways to swap samples on the fly anyway : knobs on the pads, foot switch, assign the sound change to a pad....
What is the brand of drum set you are playing on? If you don't mind me asking, how much did you invest in your kit? I'm intrigued because I have the space for a kit like this but would like to know investment costs..Thanks!
No problem with you asking, sorry for the delay! Please check my user profile for information about my drum kit. It fits just right on a 4' x 6' platform.
I have no friggin idea what time signature it is in, just like many Jethro Tull songs; it often makes me scream just like you did! :-P I'm lucky enough that my brain records the music even if it cannot really decipher it, so my only chance is to play by heart.
You got it nailed. The live version has a couple of fancy fills during the main instrumental / flute passage but I'm sure you could nail that also. Bravo. Its a tricky one to remember....
Very impressive. I too am a huge Tull fan and this Album title was always a favorite so I enjoyed watching you play. Kudos to you, you did a fine job.
i can see that this song is very hard to cover on drums, but i feel genesiss dance on a volcano is probably harder, the bass drum work for instance, and remember phil collins only uses i pedal.
My foot work needs a lot of improvement indeed; like I said on my Dance On A Volcano cover, I live in an apartment and I cannot practice very hard with my feet because hitting on the floor makes too much noise.
... But the electronic drums have nothing to do with that. :-P
Outstanding. Aside from nailing, others can see just how off the hook Barriemore Barlow was in his playing. So creative. And yes, no time signature to hang your hat on. This tune is but 1 of dozens that Barlow did with Tull that are so musical. More like playing piano on the drums.
Hmm... Sorry but I don't understand spanish and BabelFish translation wasn't really helpful! Did you say something about taking off the capo from my guitar?
Very nice to watch. Thanks.
