Agree with @TheJbach - Bostridge has a divine voice, Julius Drake is a fine accompanier. Heard them both play/sing the Winterreise last week at the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg - standing ovation stuff! Not that you could see the joy from Mr. Bostridge afterwards, he looked pretty drained....:(
Absolutely masterful--- the only painful thing is to be 47 now and know you will never do anything better than what you did at 33. The way he says "warm" is one perfect note!
I posted translations to most of these songs as put on YouTube today. If the song text was too long to be accepted as a first post, my "reply" starts the poem, and the text continues in the "original" post. Arthur Rishi is the translator of all of these.
I dreamt of requited love, Of a beautiful girl, Of hearts and of kisses, Of bliss and happiness. And when the roosters crowed, My heart awoke. Now I sit here alone, And think about my dream. I shut my eyes again, My heart still beats warmly. When will you leaves on the window turn green? When will I hold my beloved in my arms?
I dreamt of colorful flowers Such as bloom in May; I dreamt of green meadows, Of merry bird songs. And when the roosters crowed, My eyes awoke; It was cold and dark, The ravens were shrieking on the roof. But there on the window panes, Who painted those leaves? Do you laugh at the dreamer, Who saw flowers in winter?
I dreamt of requited love, Of a beautiful girl, Of hearts and of kisses, Of bliss and happiness. And when the roosters crowed, My heart awoke. Now I sit here alone, And think about my dream. I shut my eyes again, My heart still beats warmly. When will you leaves on the window turn green? When will I hold my beloved in my arms?
This really worked out wonderfully, strictly and solely because of his (Bostridge's) intensity, mastery, and precision of feeling.... it is just so exemplary a portrayal of the angst of our protagonist, the Schubert we know and all come to identify with at some point in life, eventually. Super!
He dreams again, of love, and a maiden's kiss, and the joy and bliss of love, but again the crowing wakes him and he sits up alone. He tries to sleep again: when will the leaves at the window be green - when will she hold him in her arms again?
He dreams he is wandering through meadows full of flowers and bird-song in May: he heard the cock's crow and opened his eyes, but it was a raven calling in the cheerless darkness. Who could draw the flowers of ice he can see on the windows?
*Fangasm* for both Schubert and Bostridge!

this is so much more interesting because of bostridge's perfectly matching youth.
other, like old dieskau or quasthoff, are wonderful as well, but in another way.

11. Frühlingstraum (Dream of Springtime)
