  • Also, he's a psycho you darsh. Hence the brutal disgustingness and title "American Psycho". Sure, it's over the top, but that's the point. It's there to drive the "did he really do it?" point home. Anywho, there are a lot more things I could argue about, but I don't want to waste my time on such a biased, ignorant reviewer.

  • He's an antihero, dipshit.

Of course you aren't supposed to like him.

  • Your dumber than euthyphro!

  • You ask why he does all this for no reason, that's the point you dumb fuck!

  • Are you dumb? Did you not get the deeper meaning of the book?

  • @ScottPal13

i tried to find the meaning and satire, now i wasent a huge fan of the book, but i feel that if i understood and see the deep meaning/satire of the book i may have liked it better

now i understand most of the satire is directed towards the 80`s pop culture

    but thats all i understood

can you tell me what the, excuse the expression, "big joke", is.

    thank you

    MOOSENUT42

  • It's about superficiality and greed and how human beings mistreat each other. I hate people who read books or listen to music without ever looking past the surface.

  • It's a love/hate thing. I hate the movie. The book was awesome. You should give it a second read without 50$ and a big house.

  • It put's you in the head of a psycho IDIOT!!!

  • I didn't really like the book either, I wouldn't say it was 'Shit', though.

The book just contained WAY TOO MUCH REPETITIONS, which made the book boring. As a matter of fact you could actually just skip a couple chapters, because you already knew what it was going to be about. OK I get the satire part, but dedicating half of the damn book to show how superficial and immoral these yuppies are, is a little exagerated IMHO...

  • is it weird i liked the book yet agreed with alot of what this guy said? lol

  • it was funny, ohh wait maybe it was to complicated for you

  • Dorsia cancel your reservation? Best book in in modern times. Sorry it was to deep for you.

  • Here come the opinion police.

I didn't read the book or see the movie so I have no opinion.

  • This reviewer can't get reservations to Dorsia......

  • I think your review actually does the book justice you say its always Patrick doing the same thing over and over without concern for others and only self worth thus this book is a perfect example of insanity doing the same thing over and over which for Patrick is reservations, clubs, name brand products, sex and killing. But this confession means nothing........

  • considering you have spectacurlarly missed the point of the book I put it to you that the reason you hate it so much, consider it to be about Patrick Bateman(It's not)and are angry that you cannot 'root for' this vapid, violent protagonist is because YOU ARE the youtube version of him..Another faceless, unnecessarily angry, violent(in your case with language..your game reviews are littered with stupid amounts of swearing which is neither funny nor cool) wannabe elitist.

  • @romanvanpersie except contrary to Pat Bateman...you are terribly unfunny. American Psycho is easily the funniest of all Ellis' work and he is a comic genius. You are a sweary douche! :D

  • funny review

  • he reason he does it all is because hes a psycho the answer is in the title

  • wow horrible review.

  • LOL, you really missed the point of the book. I also have a fun drinking game for you! It's called "Spot the word Funny in the definition of Satire", every time the word does not appear, you take a shot.

    Satire

    1. the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.

    2. a literary composition, in verse or prose, in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision, or ridicule.

    3. a literary genre comprising such compositions.

  • @AWarrenJohnson "Maggots already writhe across the human sausage, the drool pouring from my lips dribbles over them, and still I can't tell if I'm cooking any of this correctly, because I'm crying too hard and I have never really cooked anything before."

This is what is know as a theme statement. This is the line that clearly defines the reason Patrick Bateman is the way he is. I'm surprised that an avid reader such as yourself has missed this, as you must no doubt notice theme(s). Don't you?

  • You're the kind of a guy who probably hates Catcher in the Rye aswell. You're not looking at the books on a deeper level, you're merley taking them at face value....that is NO way to read a book. If that's what you prefer then go read Harry Potter, and leave the philosophical and meaningful books to others.

  • The people above and below me who dislike this review are pathetic douchewads.

  • Hey filmnstuff, I dont think you understood much. You rant about "why" he did all those murders without reason. Yet, its no different than the movie that you admit liking. Im not saying the book was great, but what did you expect? Please respond to this post and tell me a few books you really loved. Thank you

  • wow!!! i gotta read this book, it sounds kick ass!!!!

  • Dude, I don't even know where to begin. You prefer Clive Barker to Easton Ellis? The American school system has done you an injustice, sir. I suggest you read more. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.

  • Thanks man. That was an excellent summary of the book.

Your anger demonstrates how successfully Ellis portrays the disgusting narcissistic excesses of the 80's!

  • The part that really upset me was the part where he killed the homeless guy! He called him a loser, made him feel like crap for asking for money, kills him by stabbing him, and flips him a quarter and to go buy some gum, and then he calls him the N-word!

  • Lmao I love this review dude.

  • @Kazuyasan9999

Finally, someone who agrees with filmnstuff. People who like this book can fuck themselves.

  • @THECRAZEBLING

The book starts off cool, but then I realised that I'm learning about fashion more than anything else in there. The narrative itself starts out relatively vulgar and violent, but by the last 5 hours or so (I heard the audiobook) it just becomes too much to bear. Specifically during and after the Boy at Zoo chapter. The book would have been good if the author watered this shit down a bit, or alot. The movie however is great, and compared to the book it's an episode of Barney.

  • @Kazuyasan9999 can't think off the top of my head a worse book to hear rather than read. I am quite uneducated in the subject but tone, afflection* and accentuation of a particurlar readers take on certain passages could affect how you digest the entire story..'Boy at zoo' for instance is probably one of the funniest chapters in the entire book. It's hilarious.

  • @romanvanpersie

Yes, but the content is still the same, no matter how it's read the words have the same meaning. And I choose not to read/listen to such vile and disgusting words :)

  • Great book on concept level, but an entirely joyless read - intentionally repetitive to a max. Of course, not everything is supposed to make you feel great. Now, whether you really want to read one for a sense of satirical justice is another matter, though. And no, satire isn't supposed to necessarily be funny. It's supposed to be pretty dead serious on its level.

  • The part that really upset me was the part where he killed the homeless guy!

  • Fucking guy goes crazy, doesnt realise its a satirical look about the time and the culture, guys too stupid to review books. Guy obviously herp derped bought it after liking a movie, instead of looking into it first. Its bad because hes not interesting? THATS THE POINT, hes another drone of the time.

  • Wow, you're fucking stupid. Poor baby can't handle reading about some blood and gore. Maybe you should put some thought into this book and not just look at it on a superficial level. Oh the irony.

  • Nigga you gay.

  • Wow, you're a fucking idiot.

  • For those who are about to read the book, keep this in mind: Patrick Bateman is the human representation of USA.

  • i went on to amazon to check it out, i found a copy from 1991 it had the best cover out of all of the ones from 2006 or 2000 or even the one coming out later this year but it was $176.95 i actually found a copy in my house thankfully. but the front cover was ripped so i bought the $176.95 copy. it was a very good read, worth the amount i paid and defiantly worth more than this dumb piece of shit. but hey, its not his fault he prefers captain underpants, harry potter books and horrid henry.

  • Is this a joke??????????????????????

  • this book is amazing ur retarted

  • @tylerf13ful There´s not a single argument in this stupid review...it´s so stupid that the retard has to repeat what he says several times to fill in 6 minutes.

  • just out of curiosity, how come you never show your face in any of your reviews. have you ever watched any of thee3nds videos like his wand of gamelon or link the faces of evil review.the irate gamer is the ultimate ripoff of avgn

  • the way you did the review actually inspired me to read the book. great job!!!!

  • 0:58 "Is that really all there is to the book?"

No. American Psycho has one of the most masterful character transitions I have ever read from start to end. The subtle humor and satirical critique of many aspects of our society is done beautifully. It is extremely gory, and disturbing at parts, but this helps illustrate the effects of many of our society's shallow ideals on Bateman, who could not go on living in such a hallow, materialistic fashion without releasing his inner tensions on others.

  • This is one of the best books ever made.

  • I love the book.

the fact that people like you hate it makes me want to read it again :)

  • the violence is to juxtapose against the clean cut facade of high class yuppies. It's a writing device used by some of the most renowned writers. Also, the book was intended to be characterless as he is a shell without any substance, which he admits to us multiple times in the book. He is the product of extreme vanity. This is why there is so much mistaken identity. I understand that some people dont like the book but even the most harsh critics get what Ellis was doing, you clearly don't

  • "hes just an asshole!" lmaoo

  • I love your review, but you still neglected to see the point of the novel. It's supposed to show you how a psycho thinks and feels (If they really feel at all), and your not supposed to be going for Bateman, he's an anti-hero.

  • Bateman has no character arc nor too many character specifics because the whole point of the novel is that consumerism encourages people to flatten their identity and become brand-conscious, emotionally detached robots. He is not supposed to be a "compelling character," which is why the novel goes out of the way to portray him as an extremely shallow and uninteresting person. You're not supposed to "root for the guy", you're supposed to hate him as much as he hates himself.

  • OMG how dumb are you!!!!!!! Missed the point completely. Untrue

  • when your a psycho you don't need a reason to kill

  • i enjoy bret easton ellis's books, less than zero was better in my opinion but american psycho was still a hell of a book. i will admit american psycho is not for everyone, it is the most violent book i have ever read but i enjoyed that. if you have a twisted sense of humor like i do you will enjoy the book. 9/10

  • @kekoa1013

less than zero was brilliant, at first I thought it was kinda boring, I wasn't expecting much after having read a few pages but suddenly I noticed I had these goosebumps while reading

  • dumbass totally misunderstood the book.

  • It's like you forgot to understand the plot, which is linear.

  • it's obviously you don't have the brains to get the depth of this fantastic book

    stop reading

  • @ninnypiggy its fanboys like you who spoile reading for every one, people like you who tell us what we shuld like, fuck you if he dosn't like the book, then let him hate it, who cares, its not hurting anyone

  • @riden1234567

sorry I just don't wanna get confronted by dumb idiots like u guys each day

  • I would explain it to you but their arent enough characters... but trust me there is a deeper meaning... It is more than a gorefest or about getting reservations which is a symbolism greed, social acceptance, vanity... Bret Easton Ellis wrote the book without the whole book without any gore and just added it in to emphasis the patricks sadistic psychotic nature. there is a deeper meaning..

  • You have completely missed the point of the book and you are obviously too stupid to get the social impact of it and the satire of what the writer is trying to say! The movie is 100 times worse and your obviously a dumb fuck for not realising that. So shut up because honestly everyone is against you... look at the comments.

  • kid, ur not supposed to root for him n not supposed to like him. bateman is a fuckin loser and a douchbag. but in a way we r all similar..evryone feels humiliated and inadequate at times.. get called fat in the lunch line n everyone laughed? what if instead of head down tail between legs u punched that fagit in the face, broke his nose n everyone laughed at him? how much better wed feel. keep tellin urself that the malleable mind may even over time convince itself it actualy happnd! SATIRE!

  • I think you didn't appreciate the profundity of this book

  • Funny review. You love the film, yet criticize the book for elements also in the film.

Unless you're implying that you actually did like Bateman as a person in the film, for some odd reason.

  • I love the fact that people getts so pissed over a review of a book..sad

  • leave youtube...

  • Two legendary french writers Michel Houellebecq and Frédéric Begbeider said this book was the greatest american novel of all time.

  • This book is more of a cynical laugh out loud. I appreciate the book for everything it is. This book is what got me into satire!!!

  • this is the best book ever!

  • I do agree with you about the clothing part he goes into all these brands of clothing and that tends to get annoying.

  • Bullshit! The book was better. Its not boring. And it is very funny.

  • i see what youre saying about the clothes, its too much, the book wasnt boring though.......and it was the most brutal shit ive ever read

  • I loved the book, but this is a great review as well.

  • Ironically, I think Bateman would love this guy and his review.

  • @CatLives9 I believe he would as well

  • wut about the part where the maitre d keeps giving them all these bellinis u didn't laugh at that?

  • THIS poor guy is reviewing this masterpiece of literature as if it was intended to deliver itself like a comic book movie. I bet he had a glowing review of "wolverine" or whatever that trite bullshit was named. sorry pal, American Psycho is for big boys and big girls.

  • this is why asperger types shouldn't review bret easton ellis. I have nothing against people with asperger syndrome, but i have heard a few of these and each fails to sense the primal evil that lurks and constitutes the substrate of the average human psyche. not a bad thing, you have evolved beyond it.

  • It's one of the best books ever!

  • do you think you could review the book Psycho?

  • your an idiot you are part of the sheeple that get killed and raped by people like patrick bateman.

  • Satire does not have to be funny. It is only an attempt to change something by pointing it out.

  • chodesmoker

  • you suck fat cock! this book made me laugh over and over again

  • u sound like a fat loser im not surprised u didnt show ur ugly face in this video.u seriosly have to be a dumb ignorant fuck if thats what u think about this book. it was amazing. id bet u anything u havent gotten layed for at least 6 months.

  • Ooooooooooohhhhhh!!!!! The brutality of it all. Strap on a pair of balls and open your eyes even an idiot can see that by depicting more intense, graphical scenes Ellis is able to portray the degeneration of Bateman. If it had of all been the same we wouldnt have recognised the instability in his mental being and been able to question the reality of it all.

  • that's all there is to the book,ha ha you do youtube book review's do you know how bad you smell ,why don't you get a job filmnstuff you have a negative attitude

  • You obviously didn't understand the book. Maybe try reading something less mature if you're not up to the level of understanding of an adult.

  • You're a fuckwit - so much more happening in that book than you care to understand.

  • Dude, your video backfired.

You made this shit sound so awesome.

    I have to have it!

  • I tried that drinking game of yours on saturday, and you were correct.

  • American psycho is possibly the most polarizing book ever, It's definitely a love or hate thing. I thought it was great, the film was good but the book even better, could not stop reading it, was great from start to finish.

  • The entire novel is a reflection of the destructive elements of capitalism and consumerism.

  • Sir.. you just called yourself stupid.

"For those of you stupid enough to read this book"

    Whoops.

  • You might have had some credibility if you sounded even somewhat intelligent. Instead of using the word fuck every other word, you should try using a descriptive word from one of the many books you say you've read. I can understand why it was boring to someone like you. No suspense. Character driven plot instead of plot driven characters. You should read The DaVinci Code. I bet you'd love it.

  • You said 'fuck' and 'fucking' 15 times

  • You totally missed the point. It's a satire on 80's America, and you missed that it is actually funny. Don't blame Bret Easton Ellis for your shitty sense of humour...bitch

  • This is a terrible review... Go back to reviewing Nicholas Sparks novels douchebag!

  • To be honest American Psycho is the funniest damn book i've ever read and the movie (although i ironically love the movie) is an EPIC FAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

p.s. your supposed to despise Patrick Bateman......dumbass.

  • Wow, you completely missed the point of the book. Sorry it wasn't full of rainbow shitting unicorns. You're not suppose to like Bateman, you're not suppose to feel bad for him or watch him grow. You're suppose to see him as a monster, meticulously obsessed with his own indulgences and image. Everything about his life is gratuitous and remains unchecked because of his station in life. I really can't understand how you liked the movie and not the book. The movie takes 99% of itself from the book.

  • @jaymi77 Now THAT is a good review. It's not an uphill book, it's all downhill.

  • conflict is society.... it is just reflected by his personality

  • Is there anything you can't review, filmnstuff???

  • Satire is not suppose to be funny. Parodies are suppose to be funny.

"Although satire is usually meant to be funny, the purpose of satire is not primarily humour in itself so much as an attack on something of which the author strongly disapproves, using the weapon of wit."

Get your terminology right before you defame a novel.

  • This is the worst review I've ever walked into. You must have missed the point totally. All you're saying is that ''fuck this, fuck that'' but you're not saying why.

  • conservative review- this guy has no clue about the book.

hes only crying about what my granny would worry about as well.

he needs reasons and explainations. thats weak and narrow minded and evidence for he should better read harry potter

  • My god, you came in with the wrong perspective when reading this book. You obviously don't understand subtext or the disintegration of Bateman's mind. You have proven your enormous stupidity in this review.

  • The book is probably trying to emphasize that psychopaths do indeed care a lot about clothes, appearance, their faces, social status, etc because those are their tools in real life. They manipulate and con, and their appearance, status, and ability to earn people's trust is a big part of what they do.

  • great book, you obviously missed the point

  • @mattfca That review is like a ball of shit trying to refute the most beautiful man in the world. (I mean, Bret, not Bateman).

  • Your rant is stupid because you have yet to elaborate on the reason why the book sucks, beside the apparent "its shit, its boring, i dun get it..."

Posting this review of American Psycho embarrasses you. Its like you asking the questions "How is babby formed? How girl get pregnant?"...

  • The sole reason for bringing up clothing every single time is to point out the monotonous & shallow nature of the Bateman and his friends, and since it does occur so often, after page 50,you get used to it so that you don't pay much attention to it either way. And no, the movie isn't much better because in movie you don't see the FULL perversion and corruption of Bateman.

  • You really are stupid, almost as stupid as this review. Just because you weren't able to pick up on subtle hints Ellis dropped NUMEROUS times throughout the novel, doesn't mean it's not a work of satire. You are not supposed to like Bateman, his a psychopath for f@ck's sake, hence its appropriate for him to be an asshole. The only way Bateman can be "fascinating" is through his twisted mind, flawed perception of reality, and notorious and wicked executions.

  • filmnstuff, did you see American Psycho 2?

  • yeah right fatass u would read that book if someone offerd that

  • bullshit.... this is the best book i've read in my life.

  • @dumbelekzz That guy is such a retard. he says he likes the movie but not the book. His line of arguments is so retarded.

  • The movie was good, and that is why I read the book. But what I don't understand is why people censor the fucking book. Australia needs to get out of the fucking worrying about dingos and singing waltzing matilda, they shouldn't ban the book. The book only revealed to me that the americans way of life is (because of rich people) not caring.

  • yea the movie totally triviallized the pure evil of pat bateman i read the book well before i saw the movie i wanted to kill bateman in the book, christian bale just made me laugh

  • I am really glad that you don't like Patrick Bateman, that is the point.... he is shallow and he has no empathy, this book is not a guide to being a person, or a comic book where can find your inner hero and cheer for em. Being like Patrick Bateman is what not to do

  • in this book he attacks a girl and in the end he says that you could see her lungs under her exposed ribs

    i love this book

  • Christ Allmighty!!! He kills women and grinds them up into sausage??? I am buying this fucking book TODAY!!!!!!

  • Wait a second... you're upset that the main character of this book was not sympathetic enough? I think that is a fairly good illustration of how far you are from even beginning to get the point. A few hints for you; first of all, the book is a character study, it's not supposed to run on plot, it's supposed to illustrate something about a character. What is illustrated is the emptiness of the main character's soul. Hence, vapidity, senseless brutality, etc. Stick to sci fi and video games bro.

  • This is a terrible review. You are entitled to your opinion and all, but you come off sounding very unintelligent. This book is someone's work of art. Have you ever written a published novel? If you had written a proper review you wouldn't sound like such a dumbass. So you didn't like the book, did you really have to create this godawful rant, or could you have simply told what is was you didn't like without insulting Ellis or his readers?

  • Read Bukowski instead.

  • Actually I have. I've read and enjoyed Ham on Rye, Factotum and Post Office.

  • @filmnstuff or hubert selby, jr.

  • Definitely a book I will not be reading.

  • HAHAHA Troll is trolling, you fucking idiots.

  • Are you people insane? The only interesting thing about this book is the fact that you feel compelled to read it. I read it when it came out. It's repulsive. Did Mailer really say this was an important new book? It's just nasty people and some of us love nasty. If it's such an important work then tell us why.

  • This guy is a fucking moron, how can you miss the point so much, YOUR boring man, stop posting reviews unless you have something smart to say, JESUS this makes me angry, your the kind of person Bateman would go to town with

  • Omgosh wash your mouth out with soap. No one wants to hear someone talk with such a foul mouth!!

  • Comment removed

  • I'm reporting you.

  • review terry goodkinds stuff it sucks

  • the movie was awesome but the book was complete dogshit

  • I have to say, you completely misread this book. Bret Easton Ellis books are always told from the perspectives of the unlikable. Patrick Bateman is a character who is wholly unlikable and nonredeemable, with a dark humorous twist to his behavior and superficiality. The intense violence shows Patrick Bateman's underlying hatred for the society he lives in and the unbelievably twisted monster it created in him, and his obsession with fashion shows his simultaneous love for the society.

  • filmnstuff, try reading Under The Blood-Red Sun by graham Salisbury. I read that book last year at school. It was a very good book.

  • LOL!

  • black humour/satire isn't supposed to make you chuckle out loud!! stick to your day job.

  • Ignore this simpleton. The book is far better than the movie, especially as you get right into the mind of Patrick Bateman.

  • Was this review satirical? Cause I don't understand how someone can misread a book so much.

  • AWESOME REVIEW, FILMNSTUFF!

    Just ignore the assholes :D

  • OMG! You just don't get it then...

  • i loved this book. It is just different. The book had a plot and a point, you just didnt bother to look past it. It is funny if you are into dark humor. Bateman is compelling because he is a psycho and your not supposed to like the character, not every character is supposed to be likable. You talk like the protagonist of a book is always supposed to be a good guy.

  • the ending of american psycho is the most mindfucking intriguing that i have ever read dude... there is alot of satire that can be taken from your review and the violence made me laugh maybe because im fucked up... The descriptions of the book is good imagery to show what the people looked like and i enjoyed that.. i respect your opinion and see where you come from but its still my favorite book.

  • So with that I say...Yes the book pointless boring parts. I see where you are coming from. But some people like violence and think it is humorus, I do as i did in the movie its comical in the wtf way. Like a Takashi Miike movie Ichi the Killer...random gross torture all for no reason at all...its an aquired taste i guess. But if the violence upset you that much maybe you should should stick to Oprahs book club list and stay away from the cult classics...

  • The violence is pointless to show what a bastard Bateman is...he is a serial killer...so let me inform you of a possibilities of his reasons- they act out of lust his own personal greed...now for some this is stealing, drugs, or even television but for these guys its murder its fun they enjoy it its a past time. Bateman was supposed to have no reason...what serial killer does...there is always the why no one can answer for these actions its a lust an addiction cant be explained...

  • Okay, I just got the book and began reading it. I saw the movie 1st as well. Your right the book is boring throughout...I have read better. But you have to understand Ellis never intended Bateman to be likeably from what I understand he wanted you to hate him. Thats why he was so surprised when all these feminist groups started burning his books...cause he thought he wrote a feminist book. The pointless violence I find halarious hence black comedy satire transgressive novels...

  • It's about how mens obsession with them selfs. no your not supposed like him. parody is funny: satire is commentary. Your review is honestly as redundant as the book but the book has wit so, that's all i had to say.

  • a lot of the things you critisised make up the satire. just imagine wall street was really full of people like bateman. isn't that idea scary?

  • Sorry man, still want to read it soo bad....

  • Fucking lol'd.

  • And you liked the movie.

  • you shuld review a short story or poem by edger allan poe

  • Edgar Allen Poe is awesome!!

    So is Dean Koontz.
