I love this song. The tune, texture , highs , lows and the Lyrics. This song can be interpreted in many different aspects. Even to the point of an orgasm~
Music needs a punch, the rem boys have got the ability but I can imagine life being to comfy to push creative boundaries.I think a leap of faith is needed, give away everything the sucess has amassed and keep a guitar, a bass, drumkit, microphone and enough to hire a good producer...push the stretch limo into the pond watch the ripples fade and write me something that could be an epitaph..and a 1 and a 2 and a 1..2..3...4...lancashire cricket ground 2008 best gig ever been too.
I had no idea R.E.M. still had songs like this in them. They sound like they're 20. What's catchier, the chorus or Peter's insanely happy guitar riff? Maybe I'll have the answer after another 100 listens...
The key to interpreting the meaning of the lyrics might be whatever Mike is singing in the background of the chorus. Unfortunately, I can't make out the words! He definitely does not sound like he's just repeating the main words of the chorus. It sounds like it starts, "Make it..." and then there's a word I can't decipher. Can anyone else decipher what he's saying?
OK. This has REALLY grown on me... a ton. I actually feel the same way about it as I did "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" when it first came out... I wasn't a huge fan of it at all at first... but the more and more I heard it, it really grew on me, and once I knew what it was about, I liked it more... same now with "Mine Smell Like Honey"... plus that damn "Hu...hu...hu...hu...honey..." is so damn infectious!
I thought that "Accelerate" was the best thing from R.E.M since "New adventures in HI-FI". Looks like this new album is going to top that! Great guitar part on this one!
I remember thinking, after listening to "Accelerate" from start to finish for the first time, "This is their best album since 'New Adventures in Hi-Fi.'" So far, "Collapse Into Now" is looking like another winner. I'll be picking this one up on release day for sure, and I'll probably have it on my iPod the next day.

Good to hear Mike Mills doing his backing vocal thing. Although I like "Around the Sun" as an album, I was disappointed at the lack Mills' backing vocals on the record.
Maybe it's just one of those songs they play live, but which never makes the cut when the album is coming together. I remember being at shows in '95 and '99 where Michael Stipe introduced songs with comments like "This song almost made it onto the new album, but..."

I keep waiting for the aliens that took over rem after green to show themselves, and we can have the talanted musicians back that we have missed so much... this is just hard to listen to. Ive loved rem forever, back when it was normal to listen to one allbum straight through, now the only way to do that is to pull one song from each album from the last 15 years and listen to them in a row instead. This sounds like a worthless kid song at best, wow they need to employ songwriters.....
Very good, it's on the tracks of their fast-rock songs, such as It's the end of the world, Bad day, or Living well is the best revenge. Mike and Michael's voices merge wonderfully
Agree about Reveal being a mixed bag -- some fine songs and a few dull ones. It's still a decent album that is worth having. Accelerate is definitely preferable, IMO, and the best one since Bill left (unless you count Live at the Olympia, which is awesome). Still, I have now heard five songs from CiN, including Uberlin, which I heard today, and I already have higher expectations for it than Accelerate. Way to go, guys!!!
@taylorsurfer Thanks. I actually heard it yesterday on Consequence of Sound before they took it down per the label's request. It's quite the nice song.
reveal has some brilliant songs but also some really dull ones chorus and the ring beachball summer turns to high are all dull, but the new record seems to have a lot of variety in and all songs seem great so far so im very happy
I'd like to chime in on the side of the 'Reveal' fans. I believe that in time it will be recognised as a masterpiece. It might even be their best album! 'Accelerate' was a disastrous attempt to regain commercial success and this new track sounds worryingly like more of the same.
heck, doesn't mean anything to me what album it may or may not sound like...it's REM, and it's a new album, I'm so absolutely happy to have them come out with something new, and, of course I love it. Thankful that they came out with a new album so I can enjoy more of their work....thanks guys for touching my life....
They finally found back to the stream of energy that had them make albums like Life's Rich Pageant (let's start a new country up) and New Adventures in HiFi. This is classic REM stuff !!!
After hearing this song, I'm finally convinced that Collapse Into Now will be great! At first, "Discoverer" obviously left me rather disappointed, but "Oh my heart", "It Happened Today" and this one are absolutely brilliant!
@magpiefabric Accelerate was indeed their best since New Adventures, but given the competition is the likes of Up, Reveal and Around the Sun, that's not really saying much.
Unfortunately, they are trading on past glories, which means that rock hostory will likely look back and say "R.E.M. were a great band, but..."
If they'd called it a day a dozen or so years ago the "but" wouldn't be there.
Why are people always saying that the band was better off with Bill? I think R.E.M. is great, with or without Bill. Don't forget Mike, Peter and Michael are geniuses too.
@Xjmwy I have no interest in sales. The plain fact is since Bill left they just haven't been anything like the band they once were. This sounds like an out-take from Accelerate, which itself left me cold, even though many thought it was their great return to form.
@DrugProwlingWolf whilst I agree Bill pretty much was rem back in their golden days, you can't deny that accelerate was without a doubt their best since he left. I agree this is very similar to that slightly heavy sound that accelerate brought but is that really a bad thing?
@magpiefabric up is still the best post-berry album. the new songs are good, but up's the only one that sounds like they were really pushing themselves to do something genuinely new.
@magpiefabric I would have to disagree with you there I really like Reveal and believe that it truly is an underrated masterpiece! I know I may get a lot of stick saying that but it is only my opinion! but overall Reveal is definitely the best post Berry album!
@TheREMhq THAT'S TRUE!!!! REVEAL= IMITATION OF LIFE, I'LL TAKE THE RAIN, ALL THE WAY TO RENO, SHE JUST WANT TO BE, I'VE BENN HIGH! THIS SONGS ARE BEAUTIFUL
@pr00de I would have to disagree there I really like Reveal and believe it truly is an underrated masterpiece! I know I may get a lot of stick saying that but it is only my opinion! but overall Reveal is definitely the best post Berry album!
Poor song. They really should have called it a day when Bill quit. All they've done since then is damage their legacy as one of the great American bands.
Well, my fanaticism with this band waned at the right time, it seems.
This couldn't cut it as a B-side for Monster. Just what is supposed to hook me in this song? Inane lyrics? A pointlessly repetitive chorus? Another so terribly weak bridge?
I rated Oh My Heart and It Happened Today as fine album tracks, and markers for a natural, warming tone to this upcoming LP. I'm just starting to lose expectations.
@theyself both. i mean it sounds good, its catchy but nothing new (ie radiohead from the bends to kida, nin from downward spiral to the fragile, arcade fire from funeral to neon bible)
NOW EVERYBODY IS TALKING ABOUT R.E.M. AGAIN!! its funny how people forget about a good band when they go through rough times. Mark my words about what I-m about to say....
