  • i did roffing for a year started out when my uncle fell off and they neeed a extra hand but in the end i liked it i was 18 and about 150 pounds my the end of the month i was 165 and the next month i was 175 it hard work but i liked and learned alot i was a labor then moved to a nailer i stated making 9.75 but within 1 month i was at 12.75 when i left i was making 15.00 a hour loved the money and the work but now i am in hvac school

  • i need to go to canada because here in america the pay is no good 100 bucks a day wtf. tear off is worst tho flats are easier to me its just my opinion

  • stop writting bullshit, we dont need osha rules,we are mexicans were not that stupid to fall from the top of a building, hispanic workers take care of each other at work, osha only wants money ,do u really think they care about your safety c'mon dont let them fool you.we use proteccion only when we really want to be protected, and not because an inspector say so, stop being a stupid and dont write shit, osha yeah right lol.

  • Stop blaming the company and hispanics... how about you do some acountablity and stop buy from walmart, target and sams club when every thing they sell is made in china... If you want american jobs... then expect to spend more money for american products

  • osha would have a field day on this roof with all the violations

  • a good friend of myn does hot tar roofing and torchdowns but hates doin shingles

  • I work for local 30roofers in philly these r fucking scabs wheres the power buggies smith hoist cutters n the rhino damn they cant roof where is the slag carts then no hot buckets they got muck buckest wtf

  • this video shows what is wrong with America, I'm not against hispanics, but there are plenty of people here in the United States that do this type of work everyday, safely. There are no guardrails around the outside edge, not using a crane for tear off but ramp, no hard hats, sleeves are rolled up, OSHA would have a hey day with this company, come on get real. Reuse the cant strip and insulation, normally when you tear off a built up roof the insulation becomes delaminated and is worth less.

  • I'm a flat-top roofer as well, going into my second year and making $25 an hour (in Canada). Only other roofers will ever really understand how tough this job actually is. It's hell... but the pay is good and it makes you tough. Anyway, Mike Rowe got lucky... roofing through a Canadian winter is 10x worse than roofing in the summer.

  • @Death2celebrity - amen brother. Which part of Canada are you in?

  • i do ths to i get 14, 15 depending on boss:)

and i did shingle roofing IT SUCKS i did it for a bit worked on a church and its screwd lol,

hot tar roofing alllll the wayy im gunna go to the oil sand next year 24$hourly

  • these guys are fucking nuts, no cutter, no spades, no sweeper, no hoist, no gravel spreader......my hats off to them.

  • Why didn't they reuse the rock instead of throwing it in a landfill, it is not like rocks go bad.

  • weird, here in canada were paid by the hour and the pay is 26.30 for apprentice and 32.00 for companion

  • @claudielovesgreg My lord, thats a ludicrous load of Loonies!

  • weird, here in canada were paid by the hour

  • that boss looks like hes an asshole

  • @MEX1CAN561 Typical roofing gypsy

  • @MEX1CAN561 Sure is. Mike calls him Mr. Wonderfull. Kinda says it all.

  • i likethisguy but he doesn't seem to help much just screw everything up

  • tearing off a roof with hay fork???, there are roof spades to do that!!

  • Hi there, if you are looking for QUALITY then you should contact TILE-MOLDS . com Think it's one of the best providers in the

    market!

  • i worked for smith peat roofing in exeter ont for 5 year's and i was working weekdays and weekends some time's 18 hour days i did it all i ran the kettle i worked on the roof i ran the mop and the mini-moper i loved the work it was fun .... i was making 30$ and hour and if we did a pitch roof we got 34 and hour ... pitch will burn your skin bad .... as for the way this guy's are doing it i have never seen it don like that before we had gravel buggy's and the mini-moper

  • The smoke from hot roofing tar is > 100 times more carcinogenic than cigarette smoke.

  • Hacks

  • yeah...these guys are low rent roofrers. i would not let one of them on my crew. we work safe and professional. this is scary.

  • Only problem with this episode is that thease roofers are not that good. There safty habits are not all that good either. Kinda spookes me out wathcing them toat hot asphalt across the roof and down stairs the way they do. There are better methoids for this kind of work !

  • i love this episode thnx for posting

  • Guess this makes me appreciates my job alot more. If doing roofing was the very last on the planet I'd pass. Is that all those guys make $10 an hour? No thanks, that is way too little pay for everything that needs to be done. I make much more than $10 and I do much less work.

Feel bad for people who get stuck in this line of work, plus a bitchy boss, no thanks.

  • they make 20 to 30 an hour here in canada.

  • @damageflow lmao the boss was a real bitch. At the end Mike was getting really annoyed. He was like "well goodbye, I will never see you again" :DD

  • @David4908 I 'm sure that's only for the show. and a little bit seriously :-D

  • a journeyman roofer can make up to $40 an hour i have been roofing for half a year and i make 20$ an hour plus medical dental and pension benefits i like roofing makes you tough

  • That's cuz your on the north side of the line LOL . Anything below Iowa people IQ's and workman go down hill.

  • i work with this stuff everyday .....IT SUCKS

  • where was your fall protection

  • i was going to say the same thing if WCB saw that they would get them so fast....

  • SISSY!

  • i wouldn't say its a dirty job more than a dangerous one.

  • @chromeZe Then you have never done this job !

  • Comment removed

  • I'm white and work with hispanics. I'm the only white person on the job and I really enjoy my job. We do hot tar and torchdown. I only get 10 a hr, but I really love my job. Realistically i'll have to find a better paying job, though. It's unfortunate because I have the best boss and coworkers in the world.

  • @lobsideo Maybe your boss could increase his bid prices?

  • @lobsideo - $10 an hour? Up here in Calgary, you'll start at $20 and by the time you get your ticket, you'll be making over $30 with benefits...

  • they should have him try a pitched roof its a little more rougher

  • at first i thought this guy mike rowe was like a thickskinned handyman or like he knew a good dea about trades or something but then i read about him and hes just some guy that been in theater class since highschool and went to acting classes hes not even a labourer or tradesman

  • ha! ass-phalt! it's your ass and it's your fault! LOL XD

  • manual labor will break your soul along with your back

  • People are here because they like dirty jobs, No one except you actually gives a shit how to hot tar a roof.

  • when you remove the loose gravel it more than compensates for the weight of the new roof system. any of the single ply manufacturers will stand behind a "recover". a new single ply membrane and recovery board adds less than 1.25pounds per sq. ft. if the substrate cant handle that, they dont need a new roof...they need a bulldozer

  • Lord did you study this shit in university?

  • I did roofing for a year and went to school to become a AC tech. Now that im doing AC work the fucking roofers fuck up the drain pipes going to the units oh well more work for us keep it up roofers.

  • they should reuse the gravel

  • I seriously hope they do....

  • everybody saying the audio is out of sync, shut up i dont see you putting another vid

  • so true!!!

  • este programa es muy entretenido me gusta, estan muy bien la verdad...

  • People are here because they like dirty jobs, No one except you actually gives a shit how to hot tar a roof.

  • toonice686 i'm sorry, but no one really cares how you hot tar a roof. and yes the video is slightly off.

  • stfu

  • the audio is out of sync ...

  • stfu

  • Thought YouTube had 10 minute video time limit... Why didn't you show the ENTIRE SHOW INCLUDING the segment on house moving??? Short clip of that segment looked at least AS, if not MORE worth watching than the Hot Tar Roofing segment...

  • the voices are off!!

  • Nice face shield. What no citrus spray ? Wait now that I'm thinking about it no cutter , gravely , any safety equipment . OSHA would find the crap out of these guys . And from what I know is that OSHA is strict in CA

  • hahah no fall protection or saftey monitor either, its not 6 or 7 layers its a 4 ply built up roof, not to mention you aren't supposed to re-use insulation,no one brooming in the plies either. mike rowe is a smart man but some of the tradesmen on his show don't know much. im sure no one cares unless you are a roofer but common.

  • And most companies now have huge tankers that melts tar so you don't have to chop kegs... And even if you have to get a start in the morning while the tar is still hard ... Us roofers got it hard , think smarter not harder. And the company I work for isn't all that advanced . Whats this filmed 15+ years ago LOL

  • nice to see a fellow roofer who knows the ropes.

  • Hope you guys get paid well for this. Dirty and dangerous.

  • Yeah I quit due to lack of work(economy) .... But the pay is great Journey's make 32+ a hour plus Bennies . So if you want to make 30-40k and take 3 Months off a year .... The best part time job in my opinion . Just takes awhile to become a Journey and I have ppl to feed ..

  • Well good luck to you and your family mate, hope things pick up for you.

  • ya right u have to work your ass off lifting shit and getting dirty everyday for long hours when you could just take a 1 year college course and become a corrections officer and they get paid 20/hr starting up to 30/hr after 3 years and they dont do an ounce of labour a day

  • "Intrasacies" LOL Busted for being a grammatical genius on national TV.

  • In 13:50 to 13:55 the foreman is losing it with Mike Rowe.

  • Three words, nine one one

  • Awsome show!!!!!!!!!

  • "i got a winner here" yeah plug the chute dummy

  • I Love this show! What can I say about roofing? I've done it.....I hate it.....Won't do it again!

  • This idiot isn't replacing the insulation? He's worried about the cant strips? Cheap bastard!!

  • my dad hot tars his parking lot an his reastrunt Fritzs

  • $ 32 to start? thats a lot to start for a 14 year old. It makes sense though in a family business

  • I LOVE HOT TAR ROOFING

  • In 14:48 to 14:50, Mike complained that the burning tar burned through his gloves. If the hot tar would have done that, Mikey would have said far more than "Oh crap..". I like hot tar roofing also, but asphalt paving is a tad better. In roofing they want a guy to work like Speedy Gonzalas in 30 above weather. Sure they say that they don't work when the temperature gets to 30 above 0. Yeah right. I hate those tar kegs. Melt packs are better. Then again, a tanker is far better than a kettle.

  • Great video, thx for the post!

  • why don't they use luggers, and pour pales?

  • put him on pitch rip and tell him to get really dirty and go lay on the beach.lol

  • The foreman on the roofing crew in this video is more civilized than most roofing cunt foremen I dealt with on hot tar crews. Guess I picked a whole bunch off asshole companies. Heard that there were good hot tar roofing companies that were decent to their workers and not blood thirsty dictators where you want to just baste them in their faces. And yeah, I saw quite a few safety violations there on that video too.

  • Paid by the square foot? No way. I'd tell the company go jump in the lake. Most hot tar roofing companies I delt with pay fuck all to their labourers and roofers in Alberta. $16.00/HR to start??? Cow shit. I know other construction companies who start their people at $18 to 20.00/HR. I almost through a whole crew off of the roof because they smoked up on the job, bitched and spoke out of their asses. There are other roofers that were good to work with and worth busting your ass off for.

  • I was making $12 this summer. Had about 6 pitch roofs too. It's cause I was non-union. This was in Chicago. I did it for a sumer though, cause i had to start school again. I'm 17 now and might do it again next summer. $12 an hour kinda sucks though.

  • Firstlook 321, seeing that the canadian dollar isn't that far apart from the American dollar then yeah $12.00 ?HR does suck. There's better roofing outfits out there that would pay you more than $12.00 peanuts an hour. I made $12.00 hourly 20 years ago.

  • This deffenetly show's how imigrants truly are a part of what has build freaking california!

Yeah, white people could do this job'x. Trouble is, they don't wanna, 'cause a lot of this generation think they are "better than that". So in the mean time, ya guys better admit it, and not been ungreatful.

  • I did this job and I'm white. We only had 2 mexicans and there were 5 whites. I agree though that a lot of America is extremely lazy and obese, but there are still some people like me that work their asses off for shitty pay.

  • I'm white as well and most roofing crews I worked with were white. Alot of people are lazy and obese today but if you put them on a roofing crew, they'll drop those maurice fat ass pounds like you wouldn't believe. The word "maurice" is a sarcastic term for obese who want "more rice"- you can't gain weight from eating rice and that's the whole sarcastic point.

  • I'm white... I've been roofing since 14, started at $32 a day! Hot tear-offs 5 days a week... I've worked myself up since then and now run the family business. I don't think race has anything to do with it. If ya got bills ya gotta do what you gotta do...

  • 300? you gottta be kidding all u need is about 7 people 20 tops

  • This reminds me how General Motors builds and designs cars. Especially the rediculous Cadillacs.

  • i love mike rowe so much

  • Fuckin Hilarious,.....been roofing bur,torch-on,epdm,and pvc...with past experience in shingle and cedarshake, for the last 24 yrs, and guess what southgate..i'm not mexican..$27.00/hr., keeps me in this brutally physical occupation...and yeah...in alberta canada..all 4 seasons...HOWEVER... these clowns would be out of business in a fuckin heartbeat...with all the safety violations..

  • this is the best show ive ever seen. hahaha

  • that church is right next to my house, but i didnt see them up there roofing it.

  • yea right

  • no kidding. tying him to the chute? he was pretty stupid to do it.

  • get video, but the sound is kind of off...but,still 5 stars!

  • Ur fault my as is up here, lol

  • I Love this show! What can I say about roofing? I've done it.....I hate it.....Won't do it again!
