This was one that I tirelessly played in the bike shop I helped manage in the late 1990's. It also contributed to the possible unfavorable climate in another shop on Nantucket...;).
Some day there will be another Italian tenor as great in his own way as Lanza. But there will never be another Mario Lanza in just that way. And as long as this world remains a fit place to live, there will always be great Italian tenors.
I have no favorite singer. I just have favorite singers of particular songs. This is my favorite singer of this particular song. (and danny boy, and I'll walk with god)
You people have to get around more. Lanza does a good job on this song, but is only adequate on others. Until you've seen and heard almost everything on YouTube done by Caruso, Bjorling, Gigli, Corelli, delMonaco, Pavarotti, and a few other top tenors, don't declare Lanza the best.
For example: Caruso 'E lucevan le stelle' 1904 digital remastered version. Caruso 'Una furtiva lagrima.' Bjorling 'O holy night." These were benchmark performances. Santa Lucia doesn't bring out a tenor's depth.
@wiseroldfart I hear what you are saying, but I think that what makes a good performance of a song or a good song is a very personal thing. We all hear the same sounds differently and therefore we each have our own very individual preferences. For me, the memories I associate with a particular song or performance have a lot to do with it.
@robsargent4: That's not to say Lanza wasn't a very good singer. I'm not so much an Opera snob. It's a matter of taste. I agree with most snobs and prefer Caruso and Bjorling to all other tenors. On the female side, I prefer Sissel to all other sopranos and singers. The purists will say her voice isn't as full as they'd like (Callas, etc.) for opera, but to me, she's got the most beautiful and versatile voice I've ever heard. She does everything from Country, to Popular, to Opera very well.
everytime I`m listening that song, it remains me on my beautiful trip to rome last year in summer.....it was perfect, rome is such a beautiful, historical city that vising rome for just one time is not enough....you have to feel rome with your heart and i did:))
When I was a child of around five years old, I wanted to be an opera singer and this was the reason. I had a little 45 of four of Mr. Lanza's recordings. This was my most prized possession and I treated it with reverence. On one side there was this and on the other was "La Donna e Mobile". I don't know why, but I never listened to the other two enough to remember them. However, I would play these two over and over, doing my best to sound like this man.
la piu bella canzone italiana di tutti tempo, Santa Lucia cantata per il magnifico tenore Mario Lanza, se tu ascolta questa meraviglia tu hai incontrato il cielo!!!!!!
its a gift and lanza had it, a voice that was the best. even if people on here like other tenors, the tenors themselves knew the voice it was lanza,s ....
I have an old recording of this and somehow it feels better with that slight crackling in the background. I always imagine a hot summers afternoon in Naples and hearing an gramophone somewhere from behind shutters as an old man listens to this wonderful voice and thinks of what was, could have been and worth doing as a small tear wells into one of his eyes and he gently falls asleep for one last time.
Mario Lanza is absolutely one of the very best singers in Italian. He was just a humble taxidriver in Chicago when somebody found out that his voice is over all the normal singers of the time.
@vegeboyx Yes, it is true, and he proved to hace a most magnificent talent, marvellous voice! For example, the Italian tenor Bruno Prevedi, before he started his career, worked as a mechanic at Fiat in Milan.
@Milordvega Great way to say it! "..... he sang as if it was the final song he would ever sing." I hope we all strive for this attitude, and perfectionism as professional musicians.

Hello, I am suppose to learn the full version of this song.
Can anyone dirrect me to a video where a tenor sings the full version instead of two stanzas? (No Offense Lanza)

This singer always reminds me of the film Heavenly Creatures with Kate Winslet

@KAT1998
Lanza probably reminds you of Heavenly Creatures because the movie plays one of the songs he sings, "funiculi funicula"
