I'm not happy to hear Wolfe's idea that the novelist is a dying breed nor do I agree with him. The best writers will still make it but there will be less demand for the Danielle Steels or Jackie Collins of the writing world...K
@kaymcclain1 In that case could you please recommend a good novel that has been written in the past 10 years, I haven't been able to find one in a very long time.
the closest I've come is "the road" by cormac mcarthy but even that doesn't hold up to the worst of collection from the 20th century.
@jizzfish Here are two: Atonement (2002) Ian McEwan, and The Blind Assassin (2000) Margaret Atwood. You are right, though, most greats were written before the last decade and produced on typewriters, not PCs....K
I love all of Wolfe's work but he couldn't write a good love scene, not like D.H. Lawrence could, such as, Lady's Chatterley's Lover or The Rainbow......K
I loved `a man in full` which I read a long time ago but it seems he supports George Bush. He is indeed a remarkable writer but how can a writer this obviously intelligent support George Bush?
yea but most of them kinda suck, or aren't all that ambitious. a lot of useless books get hyped and made into movies but in the end they just kinda suck
I just finished it today. it's so engaging, complex, with interestingky evolving characters and a backdrop of college life at its most tantalizing. one of my faves.
just wrapped up Bonfire... id have to say it truly lived up to the esteem and admiration it's been showered with over the years by critics and readers alike..a true classic..ive never been outside my country, but the book gave me such detailed and analytical- and piercingly satirical- tour of urban American society that it felt like ive actually been in NY for a decade! but the most palpable effect it had on me was how it's made me even more painfully conscious of my oft-unacknowledged vanity..

Just read Radical Chic and Mau-Mauing the Flak-Catchers--the man should definitely be revered--a great scribbler. Much to learn from the man.

he's dead wrong about contemporary writers. There are plenty of writers exploring what's going on today. Current, pressing issues.

Bonfire is fantastic. Have you read 'I am Charlotte Simmons?'

Charlotte Simmons, Man in Full, Bonfire, Right Stuff, those are the ones I've read and I really enjoyed them all.
Reading the Electric Cool Aid Acid Test now, nice that they reissued it since it was impossible to find a copy for years.
