was drinking with my neighbor last night he is a iraq vet who has a few screws loose he started playing with a big bowie knife at 2:30 am it was just me and him everyone else left I thought he was gonna cut me to pieces in a drunken bipolar freak out. Believe it or not this song came to mind through the drinks and the drugs. I made it out in one piece.
the whole point is transferring the music into something real, making it a way to see the world and live in peace. its all well and good if you just like to listen to it and lead a normal conformist life, but you really aren't getting the bigger picture, which is what they wanted you to see.
I assume that Jerry Garcia played the pedal steel on this track? From what I've seen and heard, he was one of the best steel players in his time, and I think he played with the Flying Burrito Brothers. Does anyone know if he did a hard Country album; either solo or with the Dead?
@dmreeoogdaq Correct; Jerry is the steel player. Unfortunately, he never recorded a country album. Check out New Riders of the Purple Sage before 1973. Jerry played steel for NRPS until Buddy Cage showed up in late 1972. Album titles with Jerry's steel (NRPS) are "Vintage NRPS, Before Time Began, and New Riders" and on the 1972 Crosby, Nash, Stills, & Young album Deja vu for "Teach Your Children". Jerry's solo album: Garcia (more steel).
PS - Sneaky Pete played steel for Flying Burritos.
I listen to Great Music, Be it Rap, Rock, Country, My Dub/Techno, I only want to listen to music that invigorates my imagination and leads to awesome Creativity. The Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia Band is my kind of music. This Aint the 60's, there's no need to segregate, People Love Great Music... Why Cant the Corporate Honchos Respect That???
Simply great stuff. Why argue? We all know that good rock music has gone down hill since the really good old creative days of bands like The Dead who played music for the love of it - and, gave us the best of their souls - hippy or not, bet you like it.
the ridiculous thing is that jerry learned the pedal steel, which is considered one of the hardest instruments to play, seemingly effortlessly and in spare time. he is unbelievable.
At first I thought that beginning sounded like 'Teach your children well' by CSNY but then I remembered it's because Jerry Garcia played guitar for that track.
apparantly the dead wrote this song 30 min before a concert where some douchebag threatened to kill them and this was the first song of their set. ballin!
@wallfootballplayer I am truly sorry to hear you have that horrible disease. As a practicing physician It is my unfortunate duty to tell you that there is no cure. However, to lessen the symptoms, I prescribe massive doses of 'Europe 72'.
@JanetEsq a dire wolf is a real type of wolf im pretty sure, i looked it up a year or two back on images and just a bunch of pictures of elite looking wolves .
@pyrotech8285 You are both wrong, the song isn't about wolves, as are most Dead songs aren't meant to be taken literally. I can't tell you exactly what it's about, that would ruin the fun! But I can give you a hint..."the dire wolf collects his dues while boys sing 'round the fire". Who always tends to show up when heads are having the most fun...? Think it over ;)
unfortunately for you, i also love metallica, eminem, biggie, bob dylan, prince, pink floyd, muse, white stripes, megadeth, pantera, alice in chains, redman, django rhinedhart, stevie ray vaughn, howlin wolf, and blah blah blah blah...music is music..
quit using it as your identity, and you will find out there' s A LOT of good shit out there
The Grateful Dead is one of the few hippie bands I listen to. Perhaps some others are; Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, and a hand full of others. But I primarily listen to jazz, with a bit of classical. So I am by no means one of these "hippies" you speak of.
That being said, I hope that those of us with more than a modest collection of brain cells could agree that Eminem, Biggie, and a few others you listen are garbage.
@TheBestInterest why would you call me a clown then? all i was saying in my comment is that there is a lot of good shit out there, limiting yourself is only hurting you. because you don't understand, or accept it, does not mean it has no value. both of those two, whether you want to admit it or not, make instruments out of their voice, and clever verse construction is also harder than you or i could deal with.
i have a feeling you hear "fuck" and think "that guy has no talent"..but you're wrong
@TheBestInterest and then after claiming to not want to start a fight, you take a passive aggressive swipe at me?
really?
you should at least try to educate yourself about it, then make a decision...but i'm sure you saw some of the people that listened to that, and assumed that because a lot of idiots listen to it, that it was written by idiots
if i thought that way, i never would have came to appreciate skynrd
I Listen to all kinds of music, and the dead are one of my favorites. So is Eminem. I think you are lumping all rap into a category (belied by the fact that you put eminem and biggie in the same sentence, they are not even the same ballpark).
I'm not a hippie either, I just love music, and both these artists are great music for VERY different moods. Both of you are ignorant if you write off a whole genre of music based on it's reputation or anything else without listening
@blinginlike3p0 Hahahahahahaha, you cant really call rap music dude. There is no talent in it what so ever, and the music are bloody beats. It's not like they had to get the band together and jam/practice, so as a musician I strongly believe that rap is some sort of lazy rip-of of music.
@blinginlike3p0 I don't mean to start an argument about Hip Hop on the comments of a GD song, but how are Eminem and Biggie not in the same ballpark? I guess u are implying Biggie was not a good rapper? Thats nonsense
