  • DONT HURT NO 1. PEACE

  • PIGGGGGGGGGGGGPEN

  • Simply, fantastic... Jerry Garcia is the best pedal steel guitarist of his time.

  • was drinking with my neighbor last night he is a iraq vet who has a few screws loose he started playing with a big bowie knife at 2:30 am it was just me and him everyone else left I thought he was gonna cut me to pieces in a drunken bipolar freak out. Believe it or not this song came to mind through the drinks and the drugs. I made it out in one piece.

  • @murkallmidsgrowers that'll happen

  • Excellent Pedal Steel Guitar.

  • Oh, pipe down all of you and just enjoy listening!

  • the whole point is transferring the music into something real, making it a way to see the world and live in peace. its all well and good if you just like to listen to it and lead a normal conformist life, but you really aren't getting the bigger picture, which is what they wanted you to see.

  • Beatifull!!!!

  • I assume that Jerry Garcia played the pedal steel on this track? From what I've seen and heard, he was one of the best steel players in his time, and I think he played with the Flying Burrito Brothers. Does anyone know if he did a hard Country album; either solo or with the Dead?

  • @dmreeoogdaq Correct; Jerry is the steel player. Unfortunately, he never recorded a country album. Check out New Riders of the Purple Sage before 1973. Jerry played steel for NRPS until Buddy Cage showed up in late 1972. Album titles with Jerry's steel (NRPS) are "Vintage NRPS, Before Time Began, and New Riders" and on the 1972 Crosby, Nash, Stills, & Young album Deja vu for "Teach Your Children". Jerry's solo album: Garcia (more steel).

PS - Sneaky Pete played steel for Flying Burritos.

  • SLAYER!!! YEAH(loud music is pretty cool). JERRY!!! YEAH(mellow music is pretty fantastic too). MUSIC!!!! YEAH(express yourself).

  • GUITAR

  • YDOESBOBBYLOVEJERRY?

  • I listen to Great Music, Be it Rap, Rock, Country, My Dub/Techno, I only want to listen to music that invigorates my imagination and leads to awesome Creativity. The Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia Band is my kind of music. This Aint the 60's, there's no need to segregate, People Love Great Music... Why Cant the Corporate Honchos Respect That???

  • Gratefully Deadicated

  • Any slice of rap sucks

  • Simply great stuff. Why argue? We all know that good rock music has gone down hill since the really good old creative days of bands like The Dead who played music for the love of it - and, gave us the best of their souls - hippy or not, bet you like it.

  • OMG!!!!! we can look at the album cover in 1080p!!!!

  • @Django5198 audio quality.

  • 2 codas

  • so apparently theres a hippie movement of 2015, SPREAD THE WORD IF YOU WANT IT TO HAPPEN

  • @frenathadevil What day job?

  • finnagoflow - so what did jerry do in his day job then?

  • love the pedal steel work

  • Don't murder me, bro!

  • something about every gd tune makes you bob up and down like your riding a horse except in place, if.. that... makes... any sense lol

  • the ridiculous thing is that jerry learned the pedal steel, which is considered one of the hardest instruments to play, seemingly effortlessly and in spare time. he is unbelievable.

  • One of my favorite dead songs.

  • Workingman's is by far their best studio effort - I also dig Blues for Allah.

  • At first I thought that beginning sounded like 'Teach your children well' by CSNY but then I remembered it's because Jerry Garcia played guitar for that track.

  • i'll never murder you jerry. (drunk)

  • New riders of the Purple Sage version.

  • Comment removed

  • This is a great song don't care what you people say

  • 2 people got murdered. No, wait...

  • god damn jerry sucks at the pedal steel thank the lord he quit playin cuz he realized he sucked

  • THIS IS FUCKIN MUSIC RIP JERRY GARCIA SOME SAY HE WAS JUST ANOTHER HIPPIE I SAY HE WAS A LEGEND

  • on the digitally remastered version of Workingman's there are 2 versions of this song...one studio (this one) and one live (I think in San Diego)

  • fuck thats soo good

  • apparantly the dead wrote this song 30 min before a concert where some douchebag threatened to kill them and this was the first song of their set. ballin!

  • @fbskier20 a little over exaggerated... but your version sounds pretty legendary!

  • @fbskier20 robert hunter wrote it and there's no way in hell it took him 30 mins

  • Im 16 and a diagnosed deadhead

  • @wallfootballplayer I am truly sorry to hear you have that horrible disease. As a practicing physician It is my unfortunate duty to tell you that there is no cure. However, to lessen the symptoms, I prescribe massive doses of 'Europe 72'.

  • ooooh 2:00-2:15 takes me somewhere else everytime.....

  • DON'T MURDER ME EITHER... Please :)

  • There is some folklore about a "dire wolf" isn't there? Can someone help me out with this?

  • @JanetEsq a dire wolf is a real type of wolf im pretty sure, i looked it up a year or two back on images and just a bunch of pictures of elite looking wolves .

  • @pyrotech8285 You are both wrong, the song isn't about wolves, as are most Dead songs aren't meant to be taken literally. I can't tell you exactly what it's about, that would ruin the fun! But I can give you a hint..."the dire wolf collects his dues while boys sing 'round the fire". Who always tends to show up when heads are having the most fun...? Think it over ;)

  • @mcfizzle420 i was just saying what a dire wolf is, i have no clue what this songs about, except that it is amazing

  • WOW!!! If this song doesn't move you, you have no soul. keep on scoobyin .39 year old head

  • this is one of the best songs ive ever heard

  • Comment removed

  • this is the most underrated song by the dead.

  • oh...love the hippie comments

unfortunately for you, i also love metallica, eminem, biggie, bob dylan, prince, pink floyd, muse, white stripes, megadeth, pantera, alice in chains, redman, django rhinedhart, stevie ray vaughn, howlin wolf, and blah blah blah blah...music is music..

quit using it as your identity, and you will find out there' s A LOT of good shit out there

  • @banklikefrankwhite1 Eminem?

    You clown.

  • @TheBestInterest right...i'm the clown, for not being a brainwashed hippie

peace man....peace....only one kind of music is good...the kind that, you know...talks about the man, and how the man is holding us down.....peace man

  • @banklikefrankwhite1 I'm not looking to start a big fight. :I

The Grateful Dead is one of the few hippie bands I listen to. Perhaps some others are; Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, and a hand full of others. But I primarily listen to jazz, with a bit of classical. So I am by no means one of these "hippies" you speak of.

That being said, I hope that those of us with more than a modest collection of brain cells could agree that Eminem, Biggie, and a few others you listen are garbage.

  • @TheBestInterest why would you call me a clown then? all i was saying in my comment is that there is a lot of good shit out there, limiting yourself is only hurting you. because you don't understand, or accept it, does not mean it has no value. both of those two, whether you want to admit it or not, make instruments out of their voice, and clever verse construction is also harder than you or i could deal with.

i have a feeling you hear "fuck" and think "that guy has no talent"..but you're wrong

  • @TheBestInterest and then after claiming to not want to start a fight, you take a passive aggressive swipe at me?

    really?

you should at least try to educate yourself about it, then make a decision...but i'm sure you saw some of the people that listened to that, and assumed that because a lot of idiots listen to it, that it was written by idiots

if i thought that way, i never would have came to appreciate skynrd

  • @banklikefrankwhite1 Well point taken about Skynrd, sir.

  • @TheBestInterest

I Listen to all kinds of music, and the dead are one of my favorites. So is Eminem. I think you are lumping all rap into a category (belied by the fact that you put eminem and biggie in the same sentence, they are not even the same ballpark).

I'm not a hippie either, I just love music, and both these artists are great music for VERY different moods. Both of you are ignorant if you write off a whole genre of music based on it's reputation or anything else without listening

  • @blinginlike3p0 Hahahahahahaha, you cant really call rap music dude. There is no talent in it what so ever, and the music are bloody beats. It's not like they had to get the band together and jam/practice, so as a musician I strongly believe that rap is some sort of lazy rip-of of music.

  • @StonerMoaner420 You should listen to the Roots.

  • @blinginlike3p0 don't murder me wow how you feel playin your cards in life gotta love jerry

  • @blinginlike3p0 I don't mean to start an argument about Hip Hop on the comments of a GD song, but how are Eminem and Biggie not in the same ballpark? I guess u are implying Biggie was not a good rapper? Thats nonsense

  • @TheBestInterest So, everyone who listens to the dead are hippies? You sir are ignorant.

  • @TheBestInterest and if you don't have anything more to add than "Eminem?" then why chime in?

great musicians are great musicians...regardless of your personal stance on things that don't sound like they are being written under a heavy haze

i'm sorry you are too closed minded to see it...

  • @banklikefrankwhite1 THANK YOU!!! Im the same way, go from pantera to lil wayne to lynyrd skynyrd to grateful dead to jerry reed blah blah BLAAAHHHHHH good music is good music :)

  • @banklikefrankwhite1 other than eminem and metallica i agree wholeheartedly

  • @banklikefrankwhite1 Thank you for the perfect comment for all the you say Beiber I say so and so comments.

  • 1 person hasn't had the experience yet

  • I'm 15 and what is this?

  • This song fucking jams. Rip Jerry Garcia. Btw This is coming from a 15 year old.

  • The CD has a live version of this song as a bonus track. But it doesn't sound like Jerry Garcia singing. I think it was Pig Pen for some reason.

  • @MFPhoto1 i'm pretty sure bobby sings it on the live version

  • @thecryoflove  Jerry always sang this one (~):-}

  • @jamesiebear listen to the live version included on Workingman's Dead... it's Bobby...

  • are you saying that if I was loved more then somehow I would agree with you that this song is boring? you need to get some thinking done.

hey try this, go to a song that you like (instead of one you find boring) and post a comment saying how great it is. if you don't like this song/half of the grateful dead's music then you're wasting your time here, right?

  • No dislikes...just the way it should be <3

  • for me half of this band´s output is boring shit like this.

i am 50+, hippie and most of my punk-hippie-buddhist-agnostic-literary-jazz-classic-folk-friends really hate this group.

  • @Myrna4Loy

The music SOUNDS great, but the lyrics are straight retarded

  • @CallMetheMusicMan so's your fuckin mammie

  • @CallMetheMusicMan

ok, maybe one must be marsian, to be killed by this music, but i think one must be american to understand the joke or so.

for me this sounds the same as the stuff people hear in countryclubs.

  • @Myrna4Loy Ok the day i posted that comment i was allowing myself to be a bit biased. I never shoulda brought up the poetic quality of their music. Which is actually genuinly well made.

  • @Myrna4Loy then stay the fuck away from here. i don't care to hear your negative bullshit about the gd. i come here to listen to this song not to read about how many different jackass categories you think you fit into.

  • @inesyu

    nobody loves you, eh?

  • @Myrna4Loy punk-hippie-buddhist-agnostic-literary-jazz-classic-folk friends..... lol im glad i dont know you or your "friends" sounds like you and your friends are just stuck up shwaglits that are not into it for the music and for what the lyrics mean...

  • i'm 16 & i'm not a hippie, (well, sorta) so all my friends think it's weird that i'm a grateful dead buff. turns out, it's genetic, cuz my birthmom & babydaddy were fans so much that they followed them around the country & watch all the concerts that they could. JERRY GARCIA LIVES ON FOREVER!

  • Harpur College, Bingham, NY, May 2, 1970. Favorite version of Dire Wolf.

  • That Jerry Garcia could tear up a slide guitar

  • this song is great to smoke weed to

  • some pro skater put this song in theire video, who knew?!

  • @polandpal97 do you know the name of the video/skater that uses this song?

  • @TOPCAT3443 I have no clue. why?

  • yes please pass the bong....keep it going

  • workingmans dead one of my faverit albums, man i love this shit

  • Why do all my Dead T shirts go missing? Socks I can understand but T shirts? I don't trust all my friends that say The Dead are no good, any more!

  • it's just compressed to hell

but an amazing song none the less

  • Not a bootleg. You might be thinking of the live cut on "Reckoning". Pass the bong, please.....

  • the omnipotent greatful dead.

  • lapsteel jerr

  • CLASSIC

  • top notch...the best

  • love it

  • Why would someone invite a 600 Dire wolf into their house?

  • @doobiesmoke15 LSD and numerous other Hallucinogens, come on in, don't murder, me

  • @doobiesmoke15 don't question Jerry

  • not bootleg boys! this is real dead! forsure

  • i know its been 4 months since u asked but a possible awnser to u is this album was re-released could be the other version

  • Ohhh jerry and his steel guitar.

  • This THE studio cut. Grew up listening to this fine tune.

  • my friend and i (both large dudes) refer to ourselves as 600 lbs. of sin. man this is one of the best

  • its the album version, best version i think, even tho live dead is the best

  • Fuck I love this song.

  • For some reason, this doesn't sound like the version of "Dire Wolf" I remember from Workingman's. Then again, it has probably been a decade since I heard Workingman's. Is this off a bootleg?

  • @DartmouthAlum96 Yes, it could be a bootleg. Not sure where I acquired the MP3.

  • @direwoof3 This aint no bootleg. This is the original off workingmans.Smoke another one.

  • @MegaDave001 Ok...I will do :)

  • @direwoof3 Hahahaha,Jerry Christmas dude.

  • @direwoof3 hahahahaha

  • @direwoof3 This is why I love Deadheads. Anyone else on Youtube would've turned that into an expletive-laced wordvomit session. But no, we'll just go get high and get over it. :D

  • @MegaDave001 Course,fine answer.Thanks for uploading!

  • @DartmouthAlum96 I'm pretty sure this is the version that is on Workingman's - IMO, the best Dead studio release.

  • @DartmouthAlum96 i have album its the same, but i think they did more bootleg then official shit anyway....so who know

  • @DartmouthAlum96

Its the same version on the original record.

  • I wore this album to a pulp years ago. This is the same cut.

  • @DartmouthAlum96 at any rate its the version o my copy if anythings fishey it might be sped up a bit but im noot sure

  • @DartmouthAlum96 this is the album version man...think the loss of quality from being on youtube is what is throwing you off...youtube has done that to me on many songs

but i checked it out to confirm...it's a technical issue, this is the album version

  • @DartmouthAlum96 It didn't sound like the one i remember either. & i just always used that excuse too. lol

  • @DartmouthAlum96 the other version I commonly hear is live from some tv show and was on the 'Reckoning' cd.

  • Some of the very best pedal steel playing this side of heaven!!! Man, Jerry could pick it!

  • love the lyrics haha - brilliant!
