The Breguet 961 take of and land very short without this dangerous jato junk... The US airforce test successfull this aircraft, despite a crash due to a stupid action from the US test pilot (reverse before touchdown)
The whole thing was a very short term answer to a frustrating situation. It was brilliant in concept but flawed in execution. Still, if they could do this in 1980, what can they do now? Remember, back in 1980 cell phones were basically non-existent, home computers were in the 64K range and used cassettes for memory, and most cables on TVs were power cords.
It was a bad idea. Okay so just how the hell was a team of commandos just going to walk into teheran and take on the whole city and get 52 yahoos that had spent a year in cells onto a plane in the first place?
I think the accident in the desert was intentional, prolly put a CIA spook or two on board and bit the bullet for the country rather than go through with the embarrassing attempt.
@batvette You're entitled to your opinion, but I think the disaster in the desert was embarassing enough-the tragedy of loss of life not withstanding. It was a rather desperate attempt with little real chance of success. Carter should have simply given Iran a deadline to release the hostages and if it wasn't met, pounded the living crap out of the country. I believe that's what Reagan planned to do when he was elected and I believe that's why Iran got smart and released the hostages.
@Tubetopfan1 I think we're exactly on the same page (regarding the attempt) keep in mind my additional comments are merely conspiracy theory speculation.
@Tubetopfan1 I might further note I was so equally convinced on the idea of pounding the crap out of Iran that in fall '79 I enlisted in the US Navy as an aviation fire control technician so I could paint my name on the first bomb to send the ayatollah to allah. Shiped off to basic in Dec 79 , spent 4 years working on Phantoms on the USS coral sea helping send TU-95 Bears and their nukes back to the USSR. That was common, they sent armed bombers toward our airspace to see what we'd do!
Not too many choppers in 1980 that could take on 52 hostages, special forces and crew. Not too many choppers, even now, with the range of a C-130. Not too many choppers with the speed of a C-130, either. Although, if it had happened now, the V-22 would have been on the street outside the embassy, or in the parking lot PDQ
@flitemdic i don't think they're gonna fly a chopper into a stadium
a v22, llike all choppers, descends at a slow speed to land and during the landing it'll be shot to kingdom come and will be in no condition to rescue anybody
speed is the key for counter terrorism and hostage rescue as well as good planning
i'm not saying that i'm a expert in this but i think this should be common sense
Designated as the XFC-130H, the aircraft were modified by the installation of 30 rockets in five sets: eight firing forward to stop the aircraft, eight downward to brake its descent rate, eight rearward for takeoff assist, four mounted on the wings to stabilize them during takeoff transition, and two at the rear of the tail to prevent it from striking the ground because of over-rotation. Other STOL features included a dorsal and two ventral fins on the rear fuselage.

Jet assisted takeoff? I just saw another documentary where they said it was rockets, not jets.

Where I work, maintaining C-130s is our bread and butter. And this video is just awesome.
