Progressivism seeks to reinstill that collectivist sense of ascendency of societal approval above individual aspiration. This new outlook placing value not on one's birthright or affiliations, but rather on one's ingenuity and industry augered well not just for the entrepeneur, but also for the psychi of many who no longer saw themselves as servants and subjects.
What the speaker is not acknowledging is that the pursuit of individual happiness is what led to the downfall of aristocratic rulership, in that the common plebian no longer saw restrictions to his own nobility as being defined by birthright, elitist allegiance, monarchic nighthood, or ecclesiastic decree.
Why not just teach facts? The truth has no agenda. "To not be concerned about the needs of society" is a direct call to social duty above individual exceptionalism in the pursuit of happiness, and implies that we aught to feel guilty about our personal success since others aren't faring as well.
