It always makes my burst into tears. I've first heard this aria at this very moment (World Cup 1990) and this is surely the most beautiful and passionate song ever composed. It is perfect for Placido' voice, his interpretation is stunning.
@PChemato --- It's interesting how each tenor who sings this has his own personal interpretation ...... and it's obvious that Domingo's interpretation is the MOST passionate of them all. I get misty-eyed as well ...... and then there are the goosebumps.

He's the closest 2come 2the originator! As a musician as well they were both similar. Years ago when I 1st discovered Tauber, I thought 2myself this is who Domingo is:) Both exceptional musicians. Sang, played piano, conducted & arranged. Even vocal color is a bit similar. Except Domingo doesn't have that fast vibrato on his high notes. I can't think of any1 2day that come close 2Tauber!
There will always be a lots of people who will appreciate MINGO (where's the Do?) indeed. There are way too many sheep out there. And a good fraction of the sheep appear to be hispanics who support him the way they support the Mexican national soccer team. That, of course, has no bearing on his artistry or lack thereof. As a genuine opera lover I call him on his trespasses to operatic artistry such as transposing way too many operas as being just but one example.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
As a 20 yo clueless fiddlestick you should first educate yourself first in the fundamentals of opera as well as the US Constitution. Do you even know how many operas were transposed to accomodate MINGO (Where's the DO?)'s technical shortcomings? How many times have you seen Domingo like you clueless fiddlestick? Now get lost and learn some manners.
Well I guess you just have something against Placido Domingo perhaps because you'll never be as talented as he is. And well, I see that there are already some people that disagree with you. I've seen Placido Domingo several times and he's great just like many other performers that I've seen. So you can say and think whatever you want about Domingo, I know there will always be a lot of people who will appreciate him, his voice and his work.
MINGO has the best voice? Are you deaf? Since when a hooted, throaty, monochromatic and pushed voice with a feeble upper register is considered? Get a clue man. I won't mention his questionable vibrato and squillo. Does he work hard? Yes...he does. What he lacks in artistic talent and excellence, he makes up in number and selling mediocre performances in the 130 roles he performed. That is indeed a sign that artistic excellence is not something he strives for.
Chavito-From your post, which has no substance whatsoever, your shallowness is obvious. You're welcomed to opine, but you do not say much. Are you one of those hooligans which supports Domingo because he's a fellow hispanic? And who are you to tell who should or should not be on YouTube. You seem to reside in the US but obviously are not aware of its foundations on which it was chartered. One such foundation is "freedom of speech". Now get lost you little fiddlestick.
Well 1st of all I don't support Domingo just because he's Hispanic...he's probably the hardest working opera singer in history and he also has one of the best voices in the opera world (there are different types of tenors in case you don't know)...these are the the main reasons why I like Domingo and if you can't see that on him then you probably don't like opera...and about your "freedom of speech"crap, my opinion is that you shouldn't have a YouTube account so you take that and you get lost
Perhaps to some people a hooted, throaty, monochromatic and pushed vocalization, as exeplified by Domingo, is appealing. But it can hardly be described as operatic excellence. I won't bother mentioning his collosal problems in accessing top notes. You're kidding yourselves.
A wonderful performance!! This was truly Domingo's nite but German is not Placido's natural language there-fore i would have to agree Wunderlich technically had an edge.If you want an astounding climatic finish to this beautiful song listen to Franco Bonisolli's live version, his High C was stunning, just awesome.
Definitely one of the best interpretations of this aria ever(the best to me). But I don't think it's only because of the tenor, the way Mehta conducts make Placido Domingo sound better than ever.
Mehta made EVERYTHING sound wonderful that night! I'm not really into classical music, but even loved the Verdi Symphony. (If you want to hear it conducted and played poorly, watch Pavarotti's Central Park concert)
I just listened to Pavarotti doing this piece. He didn't seem to know what he was singing, or at least singing about, except the sound of his own voice. Voice, beautiful yes, but it seemed that's all it was. Here, Domingo puts his heart into it, just as Tauber did in 1930. Domingo, not quiet as sensitive as Tauber, but all still, wonderful.
beautiful and dark with yearning is your radiant gaze if I hear the sound of your voice it is like music yours is my whole heart where you are not, i cannot be just as the flower wilts when the sunshine does not kiss it yours is my loviest song because it blooms from love alone tell me once moremy only loveoh! tell me once more: I love you
One of the most beautiful presentations of this song ever! Domingo was fantastic that night! Does anyone know the translation of this beautiful song - You Are My Heart's Delight???
I agree! this was Domingo's night, Carreras obviously by his hideous facial expressions was difficult to watch and it was clear he was really struggling. Luciano was wonderful but was a little caviller and pompous. If you ever want to hear this piece in English so you don't need a translation in print, listen to the Great Mario Lanza sing this. Talk about a moving rendition you wont find a better one.
Placido, plaisir.
