I don't see that Pete is a characterization of the mentally ill. He wants to live in the forest, is it only sane to want to live in industrial city centers? His thoughts are raw in the way that fleeting thoughts are, and that is what they are, except one typically doesn't give them flight of word and so to hear them in spoken form sounds unfamiliar. Pete is surprisingly ordinary, he just has the power to tell you who he is, and what he wants. That doesn't sound at all ill to me.
