I am ashamed to be considered an American. Almost no Americans really know about how China is on the inside. They look at GDP and nothing more, GDP says nothing about the quality of life of the people. Fact: the US industry is larger than the chinese and the german together in terms of value (but the chinese export is larger). China has HUGE problems they strugle to come out of. Their losses in 2008 was huge, and their real estate marked will soon go down. Their local districts have huge debts- more than people realize. And the US still have lots of leverage.
Certainly the PRC has some way to go to catch the US in terms of economic development, but current trends suggest that it is inevitable that it will. The US has only maintained its position because it has been able to borrow from the PRC - that should tell you all you need to know.

I don't understand the point you are making. Japan has fallen behind because its economy has stagnated, China's continues to boom. Over time the Chinese economy will come to rely less on exports and more on domestic consumption. More than a thousand million people who desire a better life and prepared to work for it - that's what will enable it to surpass the US in economic terms.
@redword2007 Read the economic history. Japan did the same with their currency (kept it to low and bought US debt), but suddenly western capital drove up their currency to its "right" level. That brought Japan to become a less competitive manifacturer, and its economy was trapped in a deflation/stagflation mode for many years. The NIKKEI225 was at 39000 in the early 90`ies. Today its around 10000.... That indicates what happened.

They are polite, disciplined, and non-aggressive. The young ones, I don't fear. They all want to go back to China and help the environment there. They found my teaching tactics amusing, but . . . they have no interest in the USA. Now, the TOP PEOPLE over there, I don't know about.

One wants to set up a fashion line, but equitable, practical things SHE likes, another a restaurant which is not too costly but a bit posh & features regional Chinese dishes, another wants a trad Chinese bookstore where one can have coffee & chat & to work in a Chinese corporation as a main job . . . they really want to clean up the toxic mess there. I was impressed!
@slobomotion I got to know students from China and India when I was in grad school, and elsewhere. They are always polite and intelligent. My wife has great regard for cooking skills she learned from an "East Indian". Americans could do well to learn people skills from such people.

Fact: the US industry is larger than the chinese and the german together in terms of value (but the chinese export is larger). China has HUGE problems they strugle to come out of. Their losses in 2008 was huge, and their real estate marked will soon go down. Their local districts have huge debts- more than people realize. And the US still have lots of leverage.

That brought Japan to become a less competitive manifacturer, and its economy was trapped in a deflation/stagflation mode for many years. The NIKKEI225 was at 39000 in the early 90`ies. Today its around 10000.... That indicates what happened.

What you say is true. Just about everything we buy in stores these days is Made in China. They've got the BIG BUCKS. We got the BIG DEBT, most of which is owed to China. China owns the US. They already own some businesses and things like apartment houses, etc., in the US. I remember how this all got started: Kissinger and Nixon opened up relations with China. But I'd say China is sort of crypto-Communist-Capitalist now. Communist Mao was repudiated by his successors.

@bodryn I have two videos up you might like. One is called CHINA REPO and the other is called I OWN YOU NOW. The Chinese students I worked with recently are very nice. They are polite, disciplined, and non-aggressive. The young ones, I don't fear. They all want to go back to China and help the environment there. They found my teaching tactics amusing, but . . . they have no interest in the USA. Now, the TOP PEOPLE over there, I don't know about.

@slobomotion The Mexicans would be wise to do the same thing. The USA is not what many foreigners think that it is. The Chinese seem to know this. Kudos to them for knowing this and for wanting to go back to China and help the environment there. They are not running away. I know its politically incorrect but I said it.

@jimbobubbadj I was pretty surprised! Most of my students were Chinese females, and they have no greed, no desire for conquest. One wants to set up a fashion line, but equitable, practical things SHE likes, another a restaurant which is not too costly but a bit posh & features regional Chinese dishes, another wants a trad Chinese bookstore where one can have coffee & chat & to work in a Chinese corporation as a main job . . . they really want to clean up the toxic mess there. I was impressed!

@slobomotion I got to know students from China and India when I was in grad school, and elsewhere. They are always polite and intelligent. My wife has great regard for cooking skills she learned from an "East Indian". Americans could do well to learn people skills from such people.

@bodryn I AGREE! It is wrong to generalize & romanticize peoples, but the Bengalis are particularly assiduous. The Chinese students I just had were mostly female, & their grammar was perfect, they already spoke four languages, polite & disciplined, sweet, non-aggressive, altruistic, & they did the homework & got it to me quickly. I saw a huge difference between them & the other students. Americans are being frightened of them. Why? These all want to go back to China & clean it up!

@bodryn They are short and lots of fun. I made it a point not to show the faces of the students and you can see one young lady only for a second. It was a semester icebreaker. All the students were way too complacent, and since so many were Chinese, I thought, they are studying economics, let's get 'em thinking! It was so cool, cuz the non-Chinese students INSISTED I get their voices in the clips -- they wanted to try to speak Mandarin or at least have their voices in there, the hams! xo

There's something more than China. There has been exclusively super heat chucking technology for 100 years. It looks like history is going to say Al Quaeda actually brought down the WTC. @bodryn - Why not, since everybody is bitching and complaining about unfair trade, unbalanced trade, subsidized export. Since the Chinese are not going to revalue their RMB, what can we do? We either cut our spending or stop buying their goods.

China's President will be dictating to Obama what they want, not what we want. China is scared of our debt, which places their investments in us in jeopardy. Instead of Obama telling China to stop manipulating their currency, keeping goods artificially low or demanding a FAIR trad eagreement, it will be the Chinese making the demands...and we will bow to those demands.

@bodryn No I don't. China is a communist country, the Chinese President is looking out for his country and political party. It's more likely Obama is the puppet to his corporate masters. China will throw Obama a small bone and Obama will give them whatever they want. We are afraid of China due to all the debt they own but if we were smart, they need us more then we need them.

@nhralph China was a "communist" country when Mao was in charge. Deng Shao Ping changed it towards a more capitalist government because China needed the money. China ends up being some kind of crypto-capitalist-communist mixture. Shaken, not stirred, maybe. I think the real power is behind the scenes, and we are given a lot of smoke and mirrors to keep us hoping for a better future. Except that now the US has high unemployment because Americans won't work for pennies.
