this is absolutely disgraceful to woody guthrie--ignorant right-wingers!! This song has nothing to do with religion, god(s), or america! It was made for freedom and equality and spoke out against private property (and that verse is missing in this song), and the right hijacked it and filled it with religious and jingoistic overtones--pathetic!!! this is completely sad and wrong, ignorant bastards
I am sorry, but i think this song is so bad as mr. bush an idiot is.. xD
The very true meaning of the song is stolen by this interpretation..
it was a song for freedom and equality, to get it and i think we should fight for it!
but today there is no black you think to hate.. no, now there are "muzlims" and much people think it would be the same like "islamists".., i am angry to tell it, but the american dream is dead if an american steal what every man got by god
Abraham placed halves of a heifer, goat, and ram, plus 2 birds on two altars. Genesis 15:17 "When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces." So began an alliance (Hebron) with God and Man (Hebrew "sojourner in a land not our own") (reflections on Joshua 14) For those of you who are not from the United States, I hope we all understand I use this in representation of what I hope is the Child of God's vision for Earth.
This really wasn't what Woody meant with this song. Please remove this video. Woody wrote this song as angry response to Irving Berlin's God Bless America. Woody wasn't a patriot, he was a folk hero and a rebel. Sad that you got the meaning of this song so wrong.
@moose1908 Woodie Gutherie stood for the rights of, as you put it " true blue Americans" against the wealthy elite that seek to exploit them. Also you can't be liberal and be a socialist, they are two distinct political philosophies.
How about this ? The goverment (we the people ) would not have a tax problem if the churchs had to pay taxes like every other business that makes profits . I 'm sickened by Daystar that begs for money every minute of the day . Even makes people think they can pray and have them healed or money will come thier way .
glen beck says this song is written by a communist-go over the words-its communist-don't associate it with God, or The United States of America-when I heat this piece of crap song it turns my stomach-
Glen beck would say this as he has no idea what it means to be American. Ask a poor farmer ask a hotel maid ask any of us who bust our butts so you can live the life of my ^^^^ don't stnk. The problem with America is money and overpowered goverment.
This land belongs to the indigenous American and it was stolen from them. Illegal aliens have always been problems ask any Native American. Native have been fighting terrorist since 1492. Victory belongs to the indigenous people of America.
I agree, but nothing can be done to change the past. The best we can do is to try and assimilate all of us and get the Native people off of those poor reservations. It's so sad seeing those places in Montana and South Dakota.
Actually, Guthrie himself took those verses out because it changed the tone of the song too much. But so what if he'd decided to talk about relief lines? You have a very narrow view of patriotism.
Your going to put the mistakes of the founders of the US on the people that live in it now? its nice you know your history just next time your start throwing around the blame stop and think for 10 secs
It is sad that the land really belongs to no one,in fact when we die the land stays here.Every country has had invaders conquer it for various reasons. Not all good reasons. But they are dead and the land is still here. A great song!
The same goes with all the other countries out there time and time again. Or did you sleep through your history classes? From BC to AD whole peoples have been slaughtered for land.
You know Italians used to not look like they did? Wanna take a guess how they ended up looking tanned like that? It's because black marauders killed and raped their people fully.
Oh and those Indians you say were unjustified. Again if you ever bothered to stay awake in a history class or even take one if you managed to scrounge up enough coin to find yourself in a collage and then stay awake in it's ancient civilizations classes, ud know those Indians weren't the first here either.
Wanna guess what happened? Through tribe wars, and breeding those who were here were made into the new coming people.
Go try and sell ur flower peace bullshit somewhere else.
hey the indian won it when they came, well more like won parts and then sort of mixed with the original inhabitant. Then much like Europe after each small and big war (mainly the now USSR) we came and kicked indian ass. (lets face it 60% of them were nuts anyway killing the others)
Then unlike the indians, with our land when other people came to claim it from us, we beat the fuckn shit outa em. Don't whine people took ur land. Whine because the people defending FAILED!
every land has been stolen from tribal nations. The Saxons took England from the Britons/Welsh, The Franks took a good portion of Frisia from the Frisians, the Romans, the Shoguns.... You're an idiot, and you're argument is weak. I'm not an American obviously and there's nothing special about their country, but 'they stole it from the natives' is a case for EVERY nation, maybe Africa that the muslims invaded, south american nations my homeland (Nederland) and Portugal and Spain took....
everybody who thinks this is just a patriotic song should read the whole lyrics. It's rather a reminder to stand up against injustice. And also causing patriotic feelings, maybe.
notwiglets, I prefer to believe this song is about our great country. About how it was for everyone. I read nothing about social injustice. I read and heard about a great country. You can hear or read what ever you wish.
i really wish that republican fundamentalist christian types would stop being so fucking stupid and understand the real message of this song. This song is about social injustice and inequality, if you read the full lyrics this will become obvious. Stop being so blindly patriotic you idiots.
Some very important lyrics have been omitted. I wonder of the person who made this vid really understood the song . . . certainly the bible quotes suggest that he/she didn't.
DJSHANE24, America may not be in the best of financial statues right now, but this song is not about that. This song is about how anyone and everyone in America is part of that great, free country and that anyone can become a part of America.
Not that, you idiot, the verses. "When the sun comes shining, and I was strolling, and the wheat fields waving, and the dust clouds rolling, as the fog was lifting, a voice was chanting, this land was made for you and me" not to mention "I've roamed and rambled as I followed my footsteps, to the SPARKLING SANDS OF HER DIAMOND DESERTSr"
well im thinking someones been watching to much disney channel because oreo didnt say that part he said this isnt patriotic not that part isnt patriotic
How on earth is this a flag-waving patriotic song? Woodie Guthrie was a drifter with strong anti-establishment beliefs. This song was written to protest the co-opting of America by the wealthy elite, not to celebrate that
This song was meant to be a protest song against what America had become, not a national "feel good" song. Thank you for posting the rest of the lyrics Konform2zoidberg.
That was brilliant. This song always makes me so proud to be an American and those pictures remind me of what a beautiful country we share. God bless the USA!!
The original song was a response to "God Bless America", a song that Guthrie thought was unrealistic and complacent. So he wrote this in response. Most people leave this verse out:
In the squares of the city
In the shadows of the steeple
near the relief office I see my people
And some are grumbling and some are wondering if this lands still made for you and me.
That's why I hate it when people spin this song around and turn into a patriotic tune. It's the exact opposite.
This is a patriotic song. It was written in the agony of The Great Depression and it expresses that feeling in the last verses. It also expresses hope that the American Dream still lives.
this is just bullshit. the last verses of the song arent in it. and it was originally written in distaste for God Bless America. i mean its a rebel song really.
I don't really care why or with what intent the song was originally written. The fact that most people take it as a song of patriotism and love of their country simply says that the liberal socialistic communistic ideals of these people are completely rejected and ignored by true blue Americans. So I'm happy to use the song in light of the fact that it apparently flies in the face of why it was originally written and I say... God Bless America!
this video's complete bullshit, this song is nothing about patriotism this song is about anarchy, and the people reclaiming the country from their gov't and corporate greed, woody guthrie never meant the song to be some sort of anthem representing that which he resented
though this song is one of my favorites, this shuold´va been the american anthem, forget about all that land of the free home of the brave bulshit that everybody preaches about and no one really practice
OMG! Poor Arlo is rolling over in his grave. This version wants to make me puke. And if you want God to bless America, than act like it. Put some feet in your prayer and end these ridiculous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
since thanksgiving is right around the corner i think we all need to hold hands with the native americans and the pilgrims and sing this land is ur land. God bless America.

It's the exact opposite.

those lines seem like the most important ones in the song

To all Americans :
Happy Independence-Day today !!!
I hope that America will stay free, strong and democratic country in the future.
I wish all Americans and America best wishes for the future !!!
It has a special reason, why i write that, because America helped us Albanians to get independent (Kosova) this year. So thank you for everything.
nice greetings from Germany/Albania

You do know that this song is an expression of socialism as patriotism?

this video's complete bullshit, this song is nothing about patriotism this song is about anarchy, and the people reclaiming the country from their gov't and corporate greed, woody guthrie never meant the song to be some sort of anthem representing that which he resented

OMG! Poor Arlo is rolling over in his grave. This version wants to make me puke. And if you want God to bless America, than act like it. Put some feet in your prayer and end these ridiculous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
