I think that apple "wine" is called cider. Honey "wine" is mead and grain "wine" is beer. It is good that you let it ferment for a long time. If you bottle it too soon, before the fermentation is done your bottles could explode, which would be bad.
@acefreon I call it cider when I use a raw juicer and it has pulp. My wines usually have some grape and apple mix so I just refer to it as wine. I'm not super into it but I like doing a little wine each year.
so you just steam fruit you want into the container..add sugar or not, use the airlock or glove with hole (love that idea) and let it set for a few months..longer the better I guess. Could you then bottle it to use it from smaller containers? We had some amazing grapes this year and we just ate them or gave them away. They will be wine next year for sure! Thanks!
@Mrssoappeddler Wine is so easy to make. It's idiot proof! All you need is juice and yeast, one packet will do for up to 5 gallons. Then an airlock so expanding air can get out and not in. Then you wait a few months, or longer for better wine. It's really that easy. You can use any fruit juice at all. You can use a regular juicer or a steam juicer. You can add sugar or not.
The first time I made wine I used a sun tea pitcher and stretched a latex glove over the top and poked a tiny pin hole in the middle finger. Viola! Homemade airlock! That year was concord grapes. After 6 months it was awesome wine. Didn't add any sugar that time.
@aobabinski I cannot play any musical instruments and it's not for lack of trying! =] I can't read sheet music... I mean, I can read and understand it but all the lines make me dizzy. I can play a song on guitar or piano if I memorize it. So, there, something I just can't do! I get migraines so the lines play tricks on my mind.
I've made apple mead, pineapple mead, and elderberry wine before. It's been awhile, so I'm about to make more apple mead and something else, thanks for reminding me! Love my wine!!
A very good friend of mines husband made wine.He had barrels of wine lined up in his basement. It was amazing to see his setup. He would share with friends a glass or 2 but very rarely gave away bottles. I was lucky enough to recieve 1 of his precious bottles. He told me if I can name what his newest batch was made with he would give me a bottle. I got one hint. It was red. I guessed Tomato right. He gave me a bottle of strawberry wine he made years before. I cherished it. This was 20 yrs ago.
@SoapLoversUnite LOL, stingy wine maker ;) I never give out bottles either! I don't make enough for that and wine gets better with age, all the more reason to keep them. Maybe one day if I live in a place with a wine cellar I will make more wine. I just make it a little different each year. I wanted to distill some into brandy but I need a thermometer and am supposed to get a permit to distill any alcohol.
