For everyone who says this is a depressing song or a happy song. Its neither. Its more of a sardonic response to the 'have a nice day' culture where people willfully ignore all the shit thats going on in the background in order to feel good about themselves. But yes the uplifting music does still envoke a happy feeling, even if thats not the intent of the song. E writes a lot of very bitter cynical songs like this with happy music. Wooden Nickels is another with chirpy music but negative lyrics.

The song is about seeing all the bad but knowing it doesn't make a lick of difference. It's a reminder to overlook the negatives and just be happy, because that's all you're gonna get.

E mentions it in his biography, discovering when Beautiful Blues was released that on the radio in America, you say say "god" and you can say "damn", but you can't say "goddamn". @who041187 But it is so uplifting and happy - the actual music itself. Lyrics have always been secondary to many of us. I am the biggest Ramones fan I know, and many of my favorite "happy" songs by them have awful and bleak lyrics. It's the guitar, drums, and bass that weigh more.
