Es indignante esa etiqueta, y ¿no podemos hacer algo? esta es la obra cúspide del arte occidental, el trabajo del más grande genio todos deberían verla de 0 a 150 años
I saw the David. My dad always said, one day I am going to take you all to Rome. I said whats in Rome dad? He says Michelangelo. I say oh, well ok, I guess. Then when we finally went there (Italy) and I saw David. I stood there and told my mom and dad, you guys have to leave me here, I cant go home. I have seen true unadulterated beauty. I was serious. How can I feed myself in this strange place, etc etc. I was in that much awe. Sex has nothing to do with it. It is beauty in its purist form.
You, my friend are an absolut idiot. Please never carry your kids to Rio de Janeiro. That is a work of art done by God and it will be considered by you to be pure pornography
I'm doing a research paper on this and how it relates with patronage in florence, could anybody tell me where I can find some good scholarly sources about it.
The Accademia's film does justice to that stunning statue, which it's impossible to imagine was sculpted out of one "flawed and useless" slab of stone that sat around for 40 years after other sculptors gave up.
A few stills of how it looks in the context of the museum can be seen at tinyurl-DOT-com-SLASH-275yf9
Beh, inappropriato Michelangelo... chi l'avrebbe mai detto!! soltanto you tube... da trasecolare. Come si può segnalare ai gestori del sito una bufala simile?
unbelievable.. one of the most celebrated works in all of history by perhaps the greatest sculptor that ever walked the face of the earth gets flagged on youtube video as "innappropriate"...
Professionally filmed and very clearly described - as a former teacher of art I really appreciate your film on the master. I hope you enjoy the animated version I made on Michelangelo(for use in art lessojns) posted to you today. I do have a few others on my site that might interest you too. Sheila Graber
I remebered the first thing that crossed my mind when I first saw Michaelangelo's David years ago: no one is this beautiful. He is the most beautiful human being i've ever seen. Now, I've been to Italy and I know that Italian boys are unusually beautiful, being mostly tall, with athletic bodies and the prettiest faces you'll ever see, but David is too pretty to be believable as real.
Haha, that's very nice of you. I was born and still live in Florence, and I agree with you that there are many attractive guys here, but.. I confirm that most men cannot even compare to David. I saw again him on Saturday (David!), and there was a bunch of male tourists who looked ... puzzled out. They kept saying he is too beautiful and made them feel 'useless', lol..
Like I said in my post, boys in Italy are usually beautiful, but David is simply way, way too pretty to be believable as real. The beauty is too much. I don't know if it's true, but I read in several different sources that the boy who posed for the David statue had several male lovers, and that there were many men who fell in love with him and would give him gifts.
Yes, it might be true. I am sure I read that he was Michelangelo's lover at that time, which explains the care Michelangelo put into creating that masterpiece - and why the boy looks so 'real'. Plus, another thing I would say is that Renaissance Florence men were reportedly very beautiful. And maybe Michelangelo even idealized his lover a little bit, making him even more beautiful than he was. We will never know. I just know I cannot help but going to see him almost everyday. :)
Excellent post. What I read is that the boy who posed for David made love to many men. Whether it's true or not I don't know. To be honest with you, I don't know if I would like to be as beautiful as David. Being beautiful is nice, but being THAT pretty attracts too much envy from people. But anyway, you're right: if I could could, I would look at him all day. Such supreme beauty...
I have taken marvellous pics of him, I can never get enough. I agree he is more than perfect. And I confirm that everyone is mesmerised by his beauty...
What I am saying is that here Michelangelo chose the David figure merely as a symbol, because he could not say openly that the young beautiful man was actually Florence itself.
:)
p.s. it's not my personal view, it's what is on art history books. :)
Not really, as David in this case was meant to symbolize the young Florentine Republic trying to face the 'giant' - the Empire. That's what Michelangelo was trying to suggest with his masterpiece.
Ok, but nevertheless the statue is supposed to be of king David, who was king of the Jews and thus obviously circumcised. The boy is inhumanly gorgeous, but obviously not Jewish.
Originally the commission from the Wool Merchants Guild was for Michelangelo to create a sculpture for on top of the buttress of a Florentine Cathedral. When the splendor of the sculpture was seen it was considered to monumental to place on top of a cathedral so it was put in the Palazzo Vecchio, a symbol representing the valiant Republic. Truly on of the worlds masterpieces! :)
Anyone who is in London should visit the Victoria and Albert Museum where they have a full-size cast of the David taken from the original statue. It's not the real thing, but it's as close as you could get without and is very impressive.
If you live outside London, it's cheaper to go to Florence and see the real thing! (plus, it's warm, clean and the food tastes nice - attributes which London never seems to possess.
I was there and looked at David with my little binoculars so I could see every detail. I could even see the dust. It is absolutely breathtaking. To be done with a chisel and hammer. A master's hands could only have created something so spectacular. When you walk in there, there are sculptures Michaelangelo hadn't finished yet. They were coming out of the marble. You could see the roughness still. Hope you get to go too. And the Uffizi Gallery there as well.
You just can't believe your eyes. How did he do it with no electricity, just with little hand tools. Just incredible..Hope one day you can go see it too.
vonlossberg: Last weekend I saw a bust of Thomas Jefferson by Houdon at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. I got really close to it and it's amazing the amt. of detail that he put into it. There was another by a different sculptor of a Fr. minister, I believe. It was so realistic, you could even see the pot marks on his chin!
I am an artist too and know a little bit about it, artists just amaze me. I love when they take the time for all the little details, it really creates a fine work of art you never forget.
Do you do sculpture or drawing/painting? Unfortunately I'm not a good drawer, I can do alright, but it takes awhile. I don't want to even start talking about painting. However, I do take a photography class at my high school.
Beautiful - thank you. There's nothing like seeing it in person. When I was in Firenze years ago and saw this, a lady next to me said "I never knew a statue could make you cry."
Well - if I had to do something like that - I'ld poor plaster of paris over my nuts and then go from there. Hey - the guy's a master - I know that- who am I to critique a master but I felt like it. ok- to me - it just looks like the pubes are too bushy looking. Should lie flatter but he still did better than I could.
Nice video. Beautiful statue. Too bad the narrator is so hard to understand sometimes, and the grammar is often poor. They probably should have hired an English person to do it.
OMG its so stuning Michelangelo's David the skin the detail its like you could reach out and touch it it brings tears to my eyes its so beautiful i love Donatellos as well but Michelangelo is the most equisite
