Imagine how awesome it must have been to be alive in the thirties. The world around you was growing so fast, and the west had just barely begun to tap into the wonderful outside world- every day a new adventure showed itself to the public at large.
And the world on the screen was eerie and gray and dark, merely shadows. The foreign tales of vampires and werewolves and mummies had only just begun to peak the interest of the west.
@DuracellEnergizer Depends on what you think the script is supposed to do. Dreyer wasn't interested here in conventional dramatics - a linear narrative and realistic or complex characters. He wanted to portray a frame of mind and create an overwhelmingly *feeling* in the audience. To that end, the story is just a bare-bones frame for atmosphere and imagery. Complaining the script isn't good is like complaining, when someone describes their dream to you, that it doesn't make any sense.
Just rented the Criterion copy at my library...Wow wow wow - the lighting, shadows, surrealistic nightmarish quality is just superb - and what an appropriate time of the year to be watching it - HAPPY HAUNTINGS - can't wait to watch it again along with the commentary, etc......THANKS CARL DREYER FOR THIS GEM!
@ap0ph3nia You could, y'know, rent or buy a copy. Thank the people at the Criterion Collection who made it available in a high-quality version, not the YouTube uploader.
@ap0ph3nia Hm... out of curiosity, just wondering what you mean by "films like this one"? Check out the Criterion Collection website, they've got 2 tons of 'em in first-rate editions. Kino on Video and Image Entertainment are two others to look into.
@ap0ph3nia There are actually a LOT of them now - the DVD age was a great boon for fans of these. Though you always wish there were more. Google those distributors I mentioned above. If you're in a major city, there are probably some video stores who carry some of their discs; and Netflix and other mail rental services like Greencine have a lot.
@yohei72 -- Thank you. I live in a pretty small city so I don't really have access to films like these other than online or when they are occasionally shown on TV.
@aitch3 well...its all about awareness...how am i supposed to find films like this when i am a 15years old girl from a town that nobody know :/ ...internet is the only way but it doesnt always help ...
@maria7885 When I was your age, you couldn't see films like this unless you went to a college campus or an art house, or luckily caught it on late night TV-- Later the VHS/VCR was invented but they did not put films like this on VHS--you had a very limited selection on VHS. If only I had had youtube, netflix when I was a kid I would have been in heaven.
@maria7885 You can find many films searching on filecrop, it is a website where you can get zipped files cut into pieces, then when you have them all downloaded you can unzip them all at once and extract the movie.
Dreyer also a big influence on Lars von Trier, I think (both Danish for a start and both very interested in the metaphysical/ spiritual). Especially apparent in 'Kingdom' and 'Antichrist'. This film a classic, brilliantly eereie without ever 'shocking' the viewer into 'waking up'. Truly nightmarish.
there's a usermade music video of Massive Attack's 'angel' using footage of this film, really good stuff. as for the film itself, never saw til now, certainly a good watch
I only just came across this film but the stills on amazon blew me away. "Film art" definitely comes to mind. The fact that Criterion released a version sealed the deal. very excited.

Some nice cinematography in this film; too bad the script isn't that great, though.

From what I've read, there is very little dialogue in order to make it easier to dub 3 languages.
