I just like saying ... VIC TAYBACK..I find if I drop odd names from the 70's and 80's into conversations that they in no way belong in, people stop talking to me sooner and thats a plus when I can;t fucking stand them in the firstplace..don't you agree that conrad Bain is laughing his ass off having outlived two of his tv kids when he was old as shit even back in the day?
This is the beginning that started "used to be sad/used to be shy," but season 1 started with the lines (with a really cold, tough delivery by Lavin): "Early to rise/early to bed" with that out-of-sight guitar backing her. I really thought that they messed with perfection by replacing it with this. Also, Linda Lavin did go a little nuts here with her phrasing--e.g., the lines "Kickin-my-self-for nothin" and "got a smile/got a song" in which she really abandons herself.
@RichHartley19671 yes, the earlier version was much better. I had not heard either version in 20 odd years until tonight. Takes me back to my childhood.
I knew a guy whose mother refused to let him watch TV growing up because he told her to "kiss his grits" one day. She took the TV away from him and he wasn't ever allowed to watch it again unless he went over to a friends' house. Crazy..
Never was there a "classic" TV show that could have been soooooo much more than it turned out to be than "Alice." Flo and Mel were great characters, but Tayback got too tamed down for TV and eventually Lavin hijacked the whole series and turned it to sh*t (and don't even get me started on Vera--biggest cipher ever to be in a regular series cast). Funny occasionally, but could have been a real classic if the star hadn't let her ego get in the way.
This and WKRP In Cincinnati should be on DVD or at least downloadable content. FYI did you know Philip is real life brother of Nancy McKeon (Facts of Life)
Linda Lavin is rumored to be difficult to work with and she and Polly Holliday feuded when Flo started to become the big star of the show. Linda and Diane Ladd also feuded which prompted her to leave after only one season.
I read that Diane Ladd said that Linda Lavin was an egomaniac and she found her impossible to work with, which is why she left after one season. Notice how Polly Holiday never did return for a guest appearance.
sunday nights, mid-late 1970s: "all in the family/Archie Bunker's Place", "alice", "one day at a time", "the jeffersons". am i remembering this correctly? killer line-up. CBS killed in the ratings! made going to bed for school the next day easy. currently, the shows you watch on sundays are grim, bloody, violent. the difference is remarkable.
This show had so many great moments; one I recall offhand is that Mel's carrying a plastic turkey (at :18) with the intention of serving chicken that he will bring out of the kitchen when he takes the fake bird in. I don't remember what happened with the real turkey but he gets a hard time about not cutting the turkey so everyone can watch.
remember the earthquake, phantomdog? when Alice has the obscene caller (scary to watch for a kid). once vera took all these sleeping pills, attempting suicide. when alice's mom visted her and alice finally blew up at her, i wanted to scream at my parents/older brother for being such pests.
Yea, I recall the earthquake vaguely and the pills, not the other one too well. I would probably know it if I saw them again though. I do recall Mel buying plates from some place that started with a 'W' which got smashed at a party thrown by Telly Savalas. I remember Tommy's crush on Vera and I remember Flo helping Tommy get a tux for a school party; she hugged him to see which boyfriend's size was closest to his which he enjoyed greatly. And who could Flo's tagline?
This was when the show started to hit its stride when it moved to Sunday nights in early 1979...when Bob Carroll Jr. & Madelyn Davis {"Lucy's writers"} took over the daily operations of the series, that's when everything started to click!
I agree. The best version was the later Jazzier version. Ironcially, she sang the jazz version much more straight foward, and it worked SO much nicer! I wish more singers could understand the beauty of understated simplicity.
That bathtub shot in this opening shows Tommy in it with the gang, but in the episode "Cabin Fever" it was Mel's girlfriend Marie that was actually in the bathtub with them. Tommy was never at the cabin. I guess they didn't want a shot of Marie in the opening??
Well, it doesn't and does make sense. Your reason is good, but why bother to reshoot a scene for an opening sequence when they could just pick any existing shot to use?
@ElJefeNLA HA, yes, i was 16 in 1979, and this was a favorite show,,i remember when it first came out in 76,,loved it,,and never missed it. Wish they would bring it back on DVD.
I like this version the best

She said Flo was spun off because certain actors on Alice didn't get on.
