I went to UCLA, and was a freshman when this happened. Everyone knows it is standard policy to check for student ID at night. Even if he didn't know, he did after they told him.
Obviously this kid thought he was special, that he didn't need to show his ID like everyone else.
The cop might have tasered him too many times, but this would not have happened if he followed the rules, and didn't act like a special snowflake

When a stun gun is used in drive stun mode it inflicts pain without incapacitating.He was capable of standing and walking.I feel as though if this guy had been cooperative from the beginning and just shown his student ID,he could have avoided a lot of pain.And,while I don't agree with it,some police departments and campuses will continue to tase you if you continue to not comply with a direct order.Easier to just stand up and shut up.

I notice that a lot of these comments have to do with not doing anything wrong in the first place... Doing nothing wrong doesn't really work when it's the cop's word against the student's. Even if he had done no wrong, they could still find some excuse to use brute force. Cops can get away with a lot and they often take advantage of that. Law enforcement officers violate people's rights every day and many of those citizens don't even know it.

You should also be aware that all of these cops have been tased before as well and know personally how it feels and what you can and cannot do. The rest of the students have no idea, and to somebody who doesn't know, this can seem cruel. He was simply trying to cause a scene so that he could try and sue for police brutality. He's lucky they didn't use their batons.

@Talendiem No, he was upset because he is Iranian and they were asking for his ID to prove he was a student. He felt that he was being racially profiled. He wasn't trying to get tased because he wanted to sue someone. The officer that tased him had been fired by the real police department years before, has had multiple cases of excessive force against him (including shooting a homeless man), and obviously did NOT need to tase the guy. Tasing is if he needs to be subdued. He wasn't fighting.

according to the wikipedia article, UCLA's policy at this time allowed police to use the taser against "passive resisters". So technically it was the policy's fault... although I must say that officer must've been twisted to take advantage of that policy.
