Being at the Red Sox game the night after the Bruins won the cup was just awesome! It's a great atmosphere to be at and Sweet Caroline.....oh, oh, oh...was a great time because it was...so good, so good, so good!
Had a wonderful time, thank you Fenway and the fans!
@slip39 :) I was just watching a couple of different videos of "Sweet Caroline" at Fenway. Definitely my kind of thing, and I'll have to find a way to catch a game up there some time.
Gotta Love Red Sox Version of Sweet Caroline, Waited all Winter to see Opening Day 09' Baseball is finally back, There is nothing like baseball in BOSTON!!!
not more than i do... and if it is some how possible that you do ... god help you! i do not think i could possibly ever love anyone as much as i love this team!
this song is basic, i wish u all came to a European football match (soccer-MLS) then u would realise wa a real buz is, like Manchester united vs arsenal, then u would understand. btw i do like watching MLB
This isn't a GOOD answer, but it's because it works. If they played it and no one recognized it or sang with it, it would be gone by now. Someday people will get tired of it, and they'll try something else. But, as long as times are good at Fenway, I think people will continue to sing it.
@slip39 i think another reason why they play it is because when the song ends, you can't purchase anymore alcohol....i don't know if this is true but i've been told that a few times and i've tried buying alcohol after that and they say no
It's like their unofficial anthem. I guess it's because Neil is a big fan of the Red Sox and that's their way of honoring him. I heard he's performing it at Fenway Park this year! How exciting!
I think Neil is a big fan of anyone who plays his music for thousands of people to hear. Still, it's great he's aware of this bizarre tradition, and wants to feed the fever with a concert. I'd gladly pay about half face value for a ticket just to be part of it. He's an excellent songwriter and performer, but not really a favorite.
I think the real story is, the person who plays the organs. They always liked Neil Diamond. So one day during a game, that person plays it in between the top and bottom of the 8th. Low and behold, everyone sang along to it and it had a great reaction. Now they play it every single game at that exact time. And they cut the music for the "bom bom bom" and the "So good, so good, so good". And even sometimes for the entire chorus they don't play the music and the entire stadium sings along.
They play it because people will sing it and have a good time with it. People who are having a good time will spend more money, and come back often to spend even more money.
Did you want and answer, or were you just here to be annoying? I'm here to be annoying. I delete comments I don't like just for fun because I can.
Oh, I didn't get that. I thought they meant to say 17-1. That was the score the Yankees lost to the Red Sox by TWICE in 2005, home and away. You can look it up.
Woot! This brings back so many memories. I remember singing this at Fenway during 2004 World Series. I would touch my girlfriend's chest whenever we got to "TOUCHING YOU"
Clay Buchholtz, No hitter in his 2nd ever major league game. 23 years old and this guy is the real deal !!! 9 k's no hits GO SOX GO CLAY , I hope Terry has the sense to keep you in the rotation!!!
What a strange tradition. But it's a baseball tradition so there's nothing wrong with that. Wish we had some cool traditions here in Detroit but all we get are lame ass trivia contests and that horrible Dunkin' Donuts race--EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. Yeech!
The Red Sox had no 8th-inning song before this, they're trying to emulate the Yankees when they sing "New York, New York". No one does it better like at Yankee Stadium.

Let me think...
Nah, most of us could still stand.
On the other hand, the sitting ones may have had less to drink.
Either way, it was early in the season, and there was still plenty of time to get it right.
Enjoy your holiday season, and stay safe, whatever you celebrate. My wife and I are still celebrating a championship, so our Christmas came early.

Jeez, ya blew the most obvious jab a Yankee fan could give. Neil Diamond is from NY. Ah, well, you work at that, and get back to me.
I guess I should expect much from the fan of a team that hasn't won a championship in 7 years.
