A detector is a device used by American, Mexican, and Canadian railroads, as well as railroads in other countries, to check for defects on trains each time one passes by one of these detectors. They are automated and use infrared technology to check for such defects as hot wheel journals on each car/locomotive (such as this particular detector) and other defects like dragging equipment that can cause danger to the train. They can be heard over scanners like this one in the video.
lol. yeah I get the signal pretty good sometimes, comes in especially good at night I noticed. Dispatch goes in and out though, you may have noticed I didn't pick up dispatch very much. This usually isn't the case though. I can usually pick up dispatch better than anything else.
Yeah you should get a scanner dude. I don't even know what I did without one before. I got my first one back in 2004 and I've used one ever since. LOL, yeah I've heard 3 or 4 defects from this detector in the past few years and it's always the same thing...nothing found. I think it was just a fuck up as always. Besides, since when do you hear of hotbox defects on locomotives anyway?
A double hotbox? seriously rare. Great catch.
