A diesel one (Don't give me that anti-diesel crap, if you did a bit of research and testing into a diesel's power capability you would see its just marketing bs) so you get 55-60mpg in a big 2.2 litre turbo-charged engine. If you're into tuning anything that's not turbo-charged is a waste of time, All diesels come turbo-charged. Not only that but diesel engines can take much much much higher turbo pressures than equivalent petrol's = more power.

The fact is 90% of cars that the majority of people can afford are not exciting. If a golf is boring, is the focus exciting? The Golf is has an almost intangible air of quality and is streaks ahead of the competition.

@northcms Ever sat in Citroen DS4? Its far ahead of Golf in terms of interior quality and feel of quality that surround every detail. Golf is a great overall car, but it doesn't really excel in any area, its just slightly better than average at every aspect. Its not best looking, not best driving, not most comfortable, not most fun, not most spacious, etc, its just good at every area, but nothing spectacular. Its only clearly ahead of competition in terms of DSG gearboxes.

But why has it taken so long for french manufacturers to be on par with VW? And why is it acceptable that it has taken this long? I used to own a golf mk5, and now a peugeot 307 hdi (recession car) - it has a great engine but a terrible, cheap, rattly cabin.

I bought one about 16 weeks ago.

I'm the type that likes to research the options...and I did.....for 6 months.

I had 4 test drives of the golf. God knows how much time I spent in Renaults, Citroens and Vauxhalls.....and I reckon Ford have adopted me.

But, in the end, I bought a Golf.

I begrudge the sky high price of the bits 'n' bobs that I thought should have come as standard....and I thought hard about that.

But in the end, that was never going to stop me.

I love VW, but the problem here in my country is the Dealer, they never have parts for the service and we have to wait for weeks until the part is available, that sucks, I think VW HQ should do something because it is affecting the brand negatively. Same happened with Subaru here, but Subaru people came here, because the Subaru Dealer here sucked as hell! They canceled the dealer license and opened another Subaru Dealer that is really good. VW should do the same.

I have a MkV GTI here in the USA - absolutely no issues in 60k miles. Haven't had any other issues with my previous VWs either, though I will say that when VW got very popular here from about 1998 to 2001, their quality suffered. The newer Jettas and Rabbits are much better built though, and Consumer Reports would say so, as well.

VW are not reliable cars at all and always come close to the bottom of survey indexing. They suffer lots of electrical faults and are a pain in the back to repair. I hate it when people bang on about how reliable they are. Just victims of the 1990s "If only everything was as reliable as a Volkswagen' adverts. The most reliable cars are sadly Japanese but Ford Opel and Fiat produce a far more dependable product than VW. derbigpr500 do some research please!

Actually is a matter of taste,whether you like it or not.I own a golf 6 since the begining of the May and man trust me you can't compare it with the leon.Leon it's poor built,the plastic inside makes you feel like you are a cheap car and trust me,leon is anything but not cheap.After a while you can hear all sort of noise from the dashboard.Any of the bad things from leon you won't find on the golf.I'm not saying that it's a perfect car but for sure it's much better than the Leon.:)

Here's where you get it wrong :) The GTI should be a hot hatch in an every day car. The "war machine" you are talking about will be the R version (265bhp). Still, is a easy car to drive but it can be very fun if you ask for this all you have to do is ask and the will do it. It's not necesary to have 1 milion bhp to have fun with a car.:)

I drove Golf VI 1.4 TSI with 122 hp...all I can say is that it is worth every penny. Quality is great (as expected) and engine is really flexible, sporty but still not thirsty. So currently it is the best hatch.
