This is awesome! I am so happy I found this, totally subscribing to your channel! I'm a psych major and this totally helps me prepare for my tests. Thank you!
Yeah, yeah...There are numerous Napoleons, M Jacksons, B Clintons institutionalised by doctors who don't believe they are real somehow. Let them go, mongrels, for the sake of all of us, genuine sufferes doctors know nothing of course. Let the patients run psychiatric hospitals!!! Thanks a lot, josephmedman, keep up good work.

WOW GUYS..IM SORRY to offend many of you. I think I will remove this algorithm this week and update it. This is just how I was taught. I am faaaar from an expert in psychiatry or psychology. I just thought it would be an easy way to remember for those who are taking USMLE ONLY. I even have a disclaimer on my front page saying these are for USMLE Prep only. So guys, if you guys are NOT preparing for the USMLE, please watch this video at your own risk.
@josephmedman great videos. jus a minor point--first aid says that malingering is secondary gain (ie to get out of work), your video says primary gain, which may cause confusion.
I have fibromyalgia cfs/me somatization/conversion disorder HOW in the heck can you expect people to understand a PSYCHOLOGICAL disorder when there are so many changes in the bodily systems especially INFLAMMATION. and "la belle indifference" What a flipping generalisation. Doctors, researching and writers should stop generalising.
You say the etiology of fibromyalgia remains depression. There is no scientific evidence of this. It is far more likely that long term pain and disability (alongside being treated the appalling way you describe in your video by doctors who have been misinformed that it is somehow a psychological illness) are causing secondary depression in some patients.
I agree..However the etiology remains depression in most instances which is why anti depressants remain the 1st line drug of choice. However some new medications are coming out that were formerly anti seizure medications such as pregabalin which are being used. I would like to reiterate what is written on my board that this is JUST for USMLE board exams. I am in no way an expert in Psychiatry or even close.
It is just another physical illness, like myalgic encepahomyelitis, that has been hijacked by the psychiatric profession although there is an ever growing amount of research proving they are not psychiatric conditions. A newly discovered gamma retrovirus is being found in both fibromyalgia and ME patients, but that isn't stopping psychiatrists, from using the conditions as there milch cow regardless of the incredible harm they are doing .
There is no scientific proof whatsoever that somataform disorders exist; they are the inventions the psychiatric profession use to excuse their continued abuse of patients with genuine physical illness.
Psychiatrists have a long and shameful history of doing this. They used to call ME 'hysterical paralysis' and insist that Parkinson's disease was caused by excessive masturbation.
If a patient doesn't like being abused by a Nazi doctor they are going to say something no matter what. Doctors have no control over this. In fact the first thing any doctor should learn is how to accept that they know and control very little.
Watch this video and become the new Mengele. This is Nazi science. Just shows how fake psychology and psychiatry are. This is not medicine and it is not science.
How can you build "rapport" when you so disdain the patient and are actually lying to them when you pretend to treat them for an illness that does not exist...somataform illness is a figment of the imaginations of psches that are themselves malingerers, trying to concoct jobs out of imaginary illnesses.
this is for USMLE!!! UNITED STATES MEDICAL LICENSING EXAMS!. As I stated in my wall, please do not use this for any type of standard of care. These are just facts that physicians need to know to become licensed. I am not a psychiatrist, nor do I claim to even be close to an expert in psychiatrist. If you have any factual evidence that disproves anything I have written then I am open to discussion.
@josephmedman News flash pal, the burden of proof is on you since you are the one making the claim(s). Oh but of course you're just here to relay exam information, you take no responsibility if this information is inaccurate in real life situations.
Who cares if we instil poor scientific methodology into the next generation...
So, not long ago, MS would have been classed as a somataform disorder. A few decades earlier, diabetes, tuberculosis, any not yet understood physical illness would have been classed by your philosophy as a somataform disorder. Yeah right.
"The treatment of malingering, remember, you've got to avoid confrontation with these patients, ok. It's always going to be a very bad outcome. You want to build a physician/patient rapport and, if this doesn't work, you're going to put these guys in prison. AND THAT'S WHAT'S GREAT ABOUT BEING A PSYCHIATRIST, AS WELL, THE POWER."
This is scary. 4 complaints without medical explanation = somatoform disorder. Psychotherapy is the treatment of choice. It's just too bad when the patient actually has a deadly retrovirus, such as XMRV, which is causing the patient to be ill, rather than "false illness beliefs."
would you be able to explain EKG? That would be really helpful - you have a way of explaining that tends to stay. And Joe-thanks-the mneumonic helps too :)
To remember the main subdisorders under somatoform disorders, I like to use the mnemonic, "He Strongly Complains of Pain in the Body" for Hypochondriasis, somatization, conversion, pain disorder, and body dysmorphic disorder :)

The World Health Organisation has classified fibromyalgia as a physical illness, a soft tissue disorder, since the 1990s.

Thank you for sharing this. I'm a visual learner and just reading the book is not enough for me. I need to see it and hear it. This helps a lot.
