One of the great bands of my late teens back in the 70's when I lived in Melbourne.30 plus years later I met Greg and Kerryn at a gig in Toronto and I took my well worn copy of the Gypsy Queen LP and the triple Sunbury album with me to get a couple of signatures. I'm glad I did , cos they were both blown away and Greg's daughter was with him who had never seen the albums and now she has.
I first heard this song on my way to Rutherglen in 1972, I had just got my licence and my best mate and I were off to Mt. Ophir winery for the weekend. I lost touch with him which I always have regretted. If anyone knows Andrew MacPherson please let me know....
You little bloody ripper !!!!!!!!!! I've searched for this song for too long, and now I've finally found it !!! I remember hearing this on my parents old valve-radio, when I was five years old, and have tried to find it on Youtube since I joined, but I couldn't remember who sung it or the song title !!! Thanks for uploading it, I can rest a little easier now.
I lived in outback SA back in '72. No TV and no commercial radio. Thank God for the ABC radio and Sunday afternoons. This is just so damn full of memories.
How come this song hasn't made it on to movie soundtracks and TV commercials, like so many other Australian songs of the 1970s? Music publishers should get onto this!
This great track is included on an Aussie compilation double CD called "Boppin the Blues" (try JB HI Fi or Ebay). Some other good stuff on those CD's (and some real Cr*p!)
Thanks for posting this - I remember seeing Country Radio live at the Monash University Union in the early 1970s - fantastic band. Brings back great memories.
Would love to know if this version of Gypsy Queen is available to buy yet? Cannot find it ANYWHERE else. I could get audio [old record, record to CD - but I would REALLY like this clip! :)
@Jeniwren59 I just found this song on a compilation album Australian pop of the 70s vol 3 Boppin tkhe Blues,a few other great hard to find aussie songs on it too
Used to hear this when we were traveling to the ski slopes back in the 70's . Where can you get the track? Amazing how this stuff brigs back fond memories.
It was an ABC show called Hit Scene, shot in Melbourne and hosted by Dick Williams. Several appearances by Country Radio on ABC's Sydney show GTK can be seen on YouTube, but only in Australia (copyright issues).
Warner Music, we hope, will make several Country Radio tracks available for download soon. A CD reissue of the entire repertoire is also in the works.
@dirtbloke Sorry, can't help you. The song's not on Warner Music's active roster, either. But in the not-too-distant future, Aztec Music in Melbourne will be reissuing much of the Country Radio catalogue -- Gypsy Queen included -- as well as a couple of surprises, so we hear. SoRudeRecords will keep you posted.
This is from Hit Scene (ABC); host Dick Williams at the end is the giveaway! I remember a different clip from Happening '72 (0/10 network) as well but haven't seen that in ages.
Fine composition. It should never be remdered better by subsequent versions - altough I can speculate that this best of all versions of this composition could even have been slowed down, with the drumming even more pronounced, and with all other vocals and instrumentation otherwise as is, for a real masterclass version. But - what we have here is excellent. It is top draw as is.
Fantastic piece of music, cherished sound of childhood, driving along bush roads, hearing the song come in and out of tune on the radio. Beautifully written and sung and performed - thanks guys.
This is why I love YouTube - a favourite song heard again. My brother heard it on the other side of Oz walking past a cafe, mentioned it to me, seconds and a search later, I am listening to it. What a world!
It's on three albums: "Gypsy Queen"/Greg Quill & Country Radio (Festival), a compilation, "Wintersongs"/Greg Quill & Country Radio (Festival) and "Country Radio Live" (Festival).
When I was a callow youth I used to hang out at number 2 Gunter Grove Chelsea, home to some gorgeous girls, and marvel at Chris Blanchflower's harp playing. It was a wonderful house where everyone seemed to be very tall and glamorous, apart from me that is..I just used to sit there wide-eyed.
I saw Counrty Radio at the Credence Clearwater Revial concert in 1972 at Sydney's Randwick Racecourse (along with about 20,000 others). They were EXCELLENT and proved to be a nice lead into the loud/rocing CCR!

@ristonburrows What a great song & sung so well.
Greg has a great voice & the inclusion of the mandolin is a stroke of genius.
Dig those way out hairdos & those terrific clothes. The drummer is a big boy, isn't he?
What a difference to today's so called pop music, which i think is VOCAL SHIT.
I am 68yo & still appreciate this great music.

Country Radio could have been anything.... songwriting of this calibre LONG before Little River Band or The Eagles got going.
Gypsy Queen is THE most underated Australian song ever written. Sadly neglected in the shadows of Eagle Rock and Friday On My Mind.
