Well done Septimius! It's beautiful and beautifully played. I've been using the video to learn the solo. I'm fascinated by this version. Not quite in the same order, but "fascinating" is also a word that comes to mind when I read the comment wrestle below...

dude, who cares what guitar ur playing; it's the music that counts! Hell Gilmour's my favorite guitarist and I don't even own a strat! haha Well, I do have a G&L strat, but you get the idea. Actually, I can get a pretty convincing Gilmour tone (dirty) w/ either my LP Gold-top (DLX) or my crappy Tele!! Really, David doesn't have that traditional 'strat" tone like Hendrix did.. look @ Another brick (pt. 2) solo - he did that on a LP Gold-Top! Altho, when he plays clean you kinda need a strat!

Septimius...you mentioned...after "playing the guitar for only a year".
I don't want to seem light on security, myself...but you MUST mean...THIS GUITAR. If you have only been "playing guitar" for a year when you posted this video...I quit! You have done a very good job on this solo no matter how long you have played. If only a year...go find some band members and a studio...you'll be need one before this year is up! Great job...keep it up.
Thanks :) Yup, this was posted two years ago. I had only owned a guitar for a year and I no prior knowledge other than piano stuff. About time I make a vid of this, eh? ;)
60% drive, 48 gai, 45 tone. 50 on both depth and mix with chorus with a whole-note tempo (in the tempo of the song). I don't use this patch anymore, though, and I'm building my own Big Muff (BYOC).
There is only one attempt of the original that is posted(its like 3 minutes). You seem more than talented enough to do it. Maybe you could give it a run and post
I know its a rather akward solo, but there are parts of it that i can't help but like.
Do you think its possible to create the tone of the original with EMG pickups? Thats what I have and I don't think I will be able to.
Rather, the finesse of a tone lies in the fingers. It's virtually impossible to recreate David's tone because of the massive rig, but even if you were hooked up to it, the vibrato and overall feel is a whole other level of mastering.
The original solo is played with a Steinberger GL headless guitar, and actually played live in a statium in LA, so it'll be very hard to replicate. Besides, the tone is very cold and a tad boring IMO, so you should rather try and make the live sound ;D
You definately know every chord and feel the atmosphere of the song.
There were some awkward pauses — at least seven I counted — during the transitional change ups, but I don't think it was you so much as you were compensating for some lag in the organ/percussion area.
Yeah, those small stutters and 'insecurities' is the result of the small finesses not being in place after having played the guitar for only a year. I'm considering making a new version of this song, since it's been a while since I posted this ;p
the solos from pulse and the other live recordings are all so much better than the horrible, directionless, awkward solo on the recorded version of Sorrow. gotta love this.
those are nice pickups, i know you are using the pod xt live but would you recommend a boss gt-8 for this and other floyd songs? I hear it is also very versatile
Sounds great! Could you tell me what pedals you are using. Did you use the EMG DG20 pick gaurd or install the pickups onto the Fender pick gaurd? Thanks, JZcode
I'm using a Compression Sustainer CS3 and my PodXT Live. Other than that, nothing. This is the DG20s installed on a white pickguard. The pearl's just plain ugly.
the guitar was $800, but with the DG20, the '57 bridge and the '57 vintage neck, I'd say it's worth around $1500, if not more, just in parts. But I wouldn't sell it for under $2000 :p
This my first ever comment on youtube and i've been registered for almost two years.I've benn waiting for the right video to post my first comment and this is it
Im a 43 yrs old proguitarist and i just wanna say that your doin a excellent job.... spounds spot on like the original on the phrasing and thats extremely difficult to do w gilmours style of playing..... keep the notes a 10000s of a second longer on the long notes and ur there... take care and good luck bro....
nice to hear :) And even better when I feel, myself, that this isn't too good of a video, anymore. It's been 8 months at this point, and I can pretty safely say that I've improved well in some fields. Cheers!
Very nice! DG's like solo. I think that your Strat is equiped with EMG SA's, right? What was the amp and effects used? The tone is very close to the DG's red Strat.
All by ear? Thats good stuff man, you play just like him too. How do you get that tone though? It sounds so big and really crunchy. I have some of the equip which I heard he used like a big muff, active emgs, I have a 100watt marshall and a 150watt line 6. Is there a certain setting I should have on my amp and big muff..?
how do u get the feedback, like at the end on ur podxt?, coz iv got one and cant get feedback like that at all, could it be settings, the amp or pickups?
It involves a sort of inexplainable process. You see, a tone touches more than one frequency, so if you play a string, all the harmonics will "be" in that tone. And what I've managed to do is to use my whammy just right, and that way pull furth that tremolo. David's much more skilled, and can do some tones I don't even understand, but the essense if it, in my eyes, is just using the whammy right, with a good sustaining sound, like the one I have in this vid.
hi geeza, get a spring from a pen, stretch it a bit, then take the tremolo arm out, put the spring in the hole, put the tremolo back in, it will be less loose and stay in position better, good work by the way..
It's simulated through my PodXT Live, so I don't have a physical hiwatt. A compressor makes that sweet, sweet sustain. Or it can be used as a limiter. Whatever you need. It gives my heavier tones that extra bite.
My guitar is an American 2004 Strat with a Vintage '57 neck, now also with a Vintage '57 bridge (featured in my Comfortably Numb video). Shortened tremolo arm for comfort. DG20 pick-up setup.
Effect path:
Compression Sustainer (CS-3) -> [ A gate -> Big Muff Pi -> Sine Chorus -> Digital Delay -> Verb -> HiWatt 100 -> 1978 Marshall with Stock 70s cabinet ]*
Cheers. I'm also thinking about doing the 8-track solo on Pigs on The Wings, Marooned, Cluster One, On The Turning Away and maybe a new version of this.
Tone is excellent. Really great job. If you don't mind a small crit, you go too fast and deep with the vibrato throughout the piece. Seven seconds in being the first example that I'm referring to and then 32 and 36 seconds and so on in a few more spots. But I still give this as close to a ten as can get just because your tone and feel are otherwise excellent. Great work.
I enjoy critics from someone that knows what they talk about. I'll try and work on it. I don't normally use the tremolo for vibrato all too much. Besides, with my new bridge it's a whole different feel.
Very nice, in every way! Your tone and feel is perfect. Couple of questions. Did you do the EMG install yourself and where did you get the backing track? Did you cut down your own trem bar?
I bought the DG20, but that pickguard it comes preassembled on is rather hideous. So, I installed it on my white pickguard myself. It's not a hard task, and only requires a little bit of soldering.
I made the backing track myself. I don't have a bass-guitar, so I just used my whammy to lower my guitar 1 octave.
I used a multitool to cut down the trem arm myself. That was easy, what I'm going to do next is to make a bend on a cut down trem arm.
My guitar is an American 2004 Strat with a Vintage '57 neck. Shortened tremolo arm for comfort. David Gilmour DG20 pick-up setup.
Effect path:
Compression Sustainer (CS-3) -> [ A gate -> Big Muff Pi -> Sine Chorus -> Digital Delay -> Verb -> HiWatt 100 -> 1978 Marshall with Stock 70s cabinet ]
Hell yeah man, it has alot to do with the emgs too, which im getting for xmas O YEAH! So are you going direct in to your soundcard? Or do you have an amp there? Also, do you have the patch that you used for that sound? Or could give me some tips on how to get that sound
I've played for two years, and I have never had a guitar lesson. Learnt all from playing along.
Effect path:
Compression Sustainer (CS-3) -> [ A gate -> Big Muff Pi -> Sine Chorus -> Digital Delay -> Verb -> HiWatt 100 -> 1978 Marshall with Stock 70s cabinet ]

David's much more skilled, and can do some tones I don't even understand, but the essense if it, in my eyes, is just using the whammy right, with a good sustaining sound, like the one I have in this vid.

hi geeza, get a spring from a pen, stretch it a bit, then take the tremolo arm out, put the spring in the hole, put the tremolo back in, it will be less loose and stay in position better, good work by the way..

sounds almost like the Pulse concert version..nevertheless, it sounds really good.

Great job dude, one of my favourites by Pink Floyd. I love David Gilmour, you got the tone spot on.

goddamn, a hiwatt? how much was it? also, what does a compressor do? ultimate-guitar forums dont help
supern00b 4 years ago
It's simulated through my PodXT Live, so I don't have a physical hiwatt. A compressor makes that sweet, sweet sustain. Or it can be used as a limiter. Whatever you need. It gives my heavier tones that extra bite.
Septimius 4 years ago
Hey, thanks for the prompt answers....can u list all your gear? [because i doubt you have a hiwatt]
supern00b 4 years ago
My guitar is an American 2004 Strat with a Vintage '57 neck, now also with a Vintage '57 bridge (featured in my Comfortably Numb video). Shortened tremolo arm for comfort. DG20 pick-up setup.
Effect path:
Compression Sustainer (CS-3) -> [ A gate -> Big Muff Pi -> Sine Chorus -> Digital Delay -> Verb -> HiWatt 100 -> 1978 Marshall with Stock 70s cabinet ]*
*[ all through a PodXT Live ]

Tone is excellent. Really great job. If you don't mind a small crit, you go too fast and deep with the vibrato throughout the piece. Seven seconds in being the first example that I'm referring to and then 32 and 36 seconds and so on in a few more spots. But I still give this as close to a ten as can get just because your tone and feel are otherwise excellent. Great work.
GuitarSlinger2112 5 years ago
I enjoy critics from someone that knows what they talk about. I'll try and work on it. I don't normally use the tremolo for vibrato all too much. Besides, with my new bridge it's a whole different feel.

Very nice, in every way! Your tone and feel is perfect. Couple of questions. Did you do the EMG install yourself and where did you get the backing track? Did you cut down your own trem bar?
jhugger 5 years ago
I bought the DG20, but that pickguard it comes preassembled on is rather hideous. So, I installed it on my white pickguard myself. It's not a hard task, and only requires a little bit of soldering.
I made the backing track myself. I don't have a bass-guitar, so I just used my whammy to lower my guitar 1 octave.
I used a multitool to cut down the trem arm myself. That was easy, what I'm going to do next is to make a bend on a cut down trem arm.

Where did you get the money to buy a Hiwatt 100?
redhouse1985 5 years ago
I didn't actually use an amp here, it's all through my PodXT live, which emulates a HiWatt 100. Good sound, eh?
Septimius 5 years ago
Hell yeah man, it has alot to do with the emgs too, which im getting for xmas O YEAH! So are you going direct in to your soundcard? Or do you have an amp there? Also, do you have the patch that you used for that sound? Or could give me some tips on how to get that sound
redhouse1985 5 years ago
Oh, you're not getting the patch, but I did say the stuff I used :) USB to my comp for sound transfer.

nice fender and awesome playing. what kind of amp and effects do you use? did you learn from a tab or just from listening to the song?

I've played for two years, and I have never had a guitar lesson. Learnt all from playing along.
