Why isn't anyone playing drums? To me that's one of the best things about the song. Were they playing without Bill Buford? Still, a fascinating recording.
What an extraordinary man, Collins, to be brave enough to tackle a song that he didn't play on the studio recording, and yet sing it perfectly, and in one of his first shows with him singing lead! He truly is better than Gabriel, you can get Collins to do anything live and he'll do it fine. A flawless singer, flawless!
I am sick of people comparing Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel...THEY ARE FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT SINGERS AND PERFORMERS!!There are Peter Gabriel Genesis fans and Phil Collins Genesis fans..get over it!!Phil can never do true justice to The Musical Box..much as Pete could never do justice to Ripples.Different geniuses different styles...Vive la différence!!
@nehpetsnitram But when Collins took over singing from Peter Gabriel, didn't critics note that he "sounded more like Peter Gabriel than Peter Gabriel"?
Very good, but I wish the band didn't feel the need to shorten songs as the years went by. I mean, it's an extra 60 seconds out of your life--play the entire song as originally recorded.
My favorite Genesis tune. But one thing that I can't figure out is why Phil Collins got the words wrong. Its supposed to be "Outcast he trespassed where no wolf may TREAD" Not GO. You would think that he would know the words, but I have heard him screw up the lyrics to this song in several concerts.
How can it be more appropriate when it doesn't rhyme at all. Tread rhymes with Dead. As in Outcast he trespassed where no wolf may tread, the last sacred home of the dead. Go and Dead don't rhyme and don't make sense in the song at all.
@incubus442 Well 'go' rhymes with the 'know' that follows and, to me, seems to convey the spirit of the line better! But... 'go' or 'tread', I love the song. :)
@cosmicjazzer I don't agree. The fact that it doesn't rhyme with "Dead" in the following line makes it not flow well in the song. And knowingly changing the lyrics of a song that was written by Peter Gabriel does not dode well for Phil Collins.
Well maybe it has something to do with the fact that he wasn't part of the original creation and recording of this song??? Not making excuses for him, just saying.
For all those who follow the Genesis tribute band, "The Musical Box", need to catch them on their current US tour. They`re doing this live. INCREDIBLE, spot on rendition. Reminded me of an oft forgotten early Genesis classic!!
John Mayhew was the drummer on the album version, and unlike "The Knife" which was played live during the first few tours with Phil Collins, this song was only brought out for the Trick Tour. Phil was singer by this point.
A real treat to hear a live version of this song. You don't happen to have 'Dance on a Volcano' live with the real ending, do you? Every version on Youtube has the end cut in favor of a drum solo.
I thinked than White mountain was forgotten in Phil Collins' era... by the way Collins sangs like Peter Gabriel

@incubus442 Oh well, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one :)
Now if there hadn't been a 'know' in the next line I'd be right with you...
