The makers wanted to make ID5 more of a mix between ID3 and ID4. ID4 was great and all but there really wasn't any difficulty or realism to it like ID3. It was just speed up, turn, block, repeat. It would also give the racer more of a focus to utilize the braking system and keep the inside path from the opponent.
