I moved form Scotland to Burbank in 1989. My first US bought album was by Pat Metheny. I had to sit down after hearing him and his band for the first time. What an honor.
I absolutely love Pat and his compositions, as the melodies are always so strong-this one is no exception. As others have noted, he (obviously due to TV time constraints) had to shorten the duration of the song, but it still sounds great. His solo is relatively short, but he is able to say so much in it-truly the mark of a great artist. Absolutely great.

Poor ol' good ol' US people, I am so sorry for what your corps did to the creative medium of television. TV is just as vicious sick and unwatchable in the UK but somehow yours seems even more... weaponised. Never mind, you got some kick ass musicians...
Absolutely AMAZING!! After 17 years this song still blows me away. It must be second only to Coltrane's "Giant Steps" as the ultimate exercise in improvisation.
That Gibson (now retired) is so "used" and really has a nice tone. (check out the tooth brush on the bridge that holds his guitar strap). The Secret Story Tour is the first Pat Metheny concert I went to, very memorable!

thanks a lot for your clips - they are performances i've always wanted to hear. On one of pat's podcasts he talks about this performance - saying that it was probably a bad idea to play this song in front of millions of viewers! If you know the tune and the changes, it's a really, really, hard song to play. pat has balls.
It should be showing with the HQ option as I encode all my files using the same compression settings in Compressor. Let me know if you cannot turn on the HQ playback option manually.
