  • This one... is a very hard song...

  • It's just so beautiful. UHHH...

  • damn, they are speeding along on this live. Like the record wasn't fast enough! WOW!

  • Pat is almost as good as Kenny G.

  • @xsited1

  • I moved form Scotland to Burbank in 1989. My first US bought album was by Pat Metheny. I had to sit down after hearing him and his band for the first time. What an honor.

  • Love it. Real smooth ...

  • Grande Pat Metheny !!! Musica che arriva dritta al cuore.

  • this is music.....

  • I absolutely love Pat and his compositions, as the melodies are always so strong, and this song is no exception. As others have noted, he (obviously due to TV time constraints) had to shorten the duration of the song, but it still sounds great. His solo is short but he is still able to say so much in it, truly the mark of a great artist. Absolutely great.

  • pat metheny group:semplicemente i migliori!

  • Poor ol' good ol' US people, I am so sorry for what your corps did to the creative medium of television. TV is just as vicious sick and unwatchable in the UK but somehow yours seems even more... weaponised. Never mind, you got some kick ass musicians...

  • Only if Jay had good music like Pats on his show in todays time, conceivably his ratings would be higher.

  • @tdotjon Did you notice at the end that Jay pull out a pen so Pat could sign the CD? You don't see that very often.

  • Nice support work in this performance. Brilliant, dynamic, to the point horn work. Steve Rodby is superb on bass.

  • I remember that night so well.

  • The guy in the white shirt is famed German guitarist Torsten de Winkel.

  • We were supposed to play 2 songs. In the end, Jay talked to some guests longer than planned and the 2nd song got canned.

  • @ostadhidayat hilarious? It's cool!

  • he doesn't have normal parents they must be halfgods like him :P

  • I liked the trumpet parts better than the guitar parts.

  • This song reminds me of where I travel. I love it.

  • That Gibson (now retired) is so "used" and really has a nice tone. (check out the tooth brush on the bridge that holds his guitar strap). The Secret Story Tour is the first Pat Metheny concert I went to, very memorable!

  • awesome tune, pat

    amazing assholish q-s from JAY

  • Haha, Richard Dean Anderson!

  • love the way he grooves just gets lost in the music was even more so the case when he was younger he would just explode into space gotta see him again

  • Masura. Spoken like a true mid-westerner.

  • I accidentally deleted a question by suum52 who asked where was the second song Pat performed on that same show. I don't know, but I'm still searching through my tapes for it.

    Dave

  • @morrisonAV This guy is my guitar heo too! I love Secret Story. I actually want them to play See the World as the last song at my funeral! What an upbeat way to go out! Thanks for posting!

  • when i first heard secret stories I was blown away that is still 1 of my all time best JAZZ/FUSION albums amazing

  • Only Pat M. could take a song that's almost 5 minutes long and reduce it to almost 3 and a half minutes. That's good.

  • yeah! seems to have higher tempo too than in album if not mistaken.

  • and he left out the intro

  • Considering how most of his solos are at least that long, I' d say it's super amazing.

  • yes i think jay leno was getting an autograph!

  • Cool! I've got tickets for the Orchestrion tour for Boston next May. Was Leno getting his autograph at the end? Lol. I'd never heard this song before or anything from SS for that matter, until yesterday. Typical Pat stuff that just is so moving. Thanks for posting!

  • oops I posted before seeing video. I was actually looking for the performance on Johnny Carson Tonight show. Anyone seen that? It was in the late 80's.

  • wow i've been looking for this performance for years. i remember it that night, but i wasn't a total complete fan at the time, so i was trying to remember what song he did, and here it is, thanks!

  • God that's an ugly shirt:) One of my favorite Metheny-tunes and it's great hearing him say a word or two. Wish there were more interviews on the tube.

  • this is brilliant! what lush harmonies! very intricate and complex yet still so melodic and pleasing to the ears!

  • I've been a Pat Metheny fan since the early 80's and will be seeing him at Walt Disney Hall in April, I can hardly wait. He always puts on a good show.

  • I've been listening to Pat since he was with Gary Burton in 1975. I never go far without having his music around.

  • @Hoontasan

i hear his music takes you to "another place" as it plays in the background...while your priest manipulates you during sleep overs......lol

  • @huntercalgary listens to polka music while blowing the neighbor's dog and getting fucked in the ass by his boyfriend.

  • @Hoontasan

    ok......you lose......your surrender is obvious twerp.......buh bye....lol

    lol

    lol

  • @huntercalgary agrees that he blows dogs and takes it up the ass.

  • @Hoontasan What a waste of carbon and oxygen you are.

  • The quality is amazing!! Thanks for posting!

  • If you have what other song he did PLEASE POST!!!! Thanks for posting this, one of my all time favorites on the album!! I think back to what I was doing when this was live. I was nowhere near listening to this in'92. I was dancing on Party Machine and Soul Train; didn't discover Pat til '94,'95. Unbelievable that I missed this!! I am the BIGGEST fan these days!! Jay Leno looked so young then! WOW!!

  • I'm still looking for more clips so don't give up! I've been a fan of Pats' since '77 or '78 and haven't missed a concert or album since. I always tried to tape him whenever I heard he was going to be on TV and I'm glad I found the two clips I DID find. Dave

  • Dave, the man!! 'Preciate the love you have for Pat! Sometimes I think I'm alone in my fanship, but you show me I'm not! Thanks again buddy, and I will stay tuned!!

  • Cool song I just wish this wasnt one of the songs we have to march to. we are still working on our opener but im dreading the moment we put this on the field. this was not meant to be marched.

  • thanks a lot for your clips - they are performances i've always wanted to hear. On one of pat's podcasts he talks about this performance - saying that it was probably a bad idea to play this song in front of millions of viewers! If you know the tune and the changes, it's a really, really, hard song to play. pat has balls.

  • excellent thanks!!!

  • ...and what did they play 'later'?

  • Your clips rock - the sound on them is magic. Really 'live'. And the picture is exemplary - even without the 'HQ'.

  • It should be showing with the HQ option as I encode all my files using the same compression settings in Compressor. Let me know if you cannot turn on the HQ playback option manually.

  • @morrisonAV Only Pat can take an idea thats 20 seconds long and make it into a 5 minute song!

  • @soup2nuts1 i'm not a fan of classical music, but those classical musicians made 30(0r more) min songs out of 5 second motifs.
