  • In a recent conversation with another guy on YouTube, we have both come to the conclusion that they are doing their own 'covers' of popular songs in the respective genres. But they do not play the main melody because they would have to play royalties otherwise, but most of the song is based on the original.

  • Yea so what this is pushing the whole 5 idea...it is a little generic...but I personally disagree just because something is played in an odd time sig it has to "flow". Why does all music have to "flow". If it was meant to sound choppier and more phasey, and that was the artist's intent, than so be it. Personally, I really like it when odd time signatures stick out like a sore thumb. If they are done properly of course. If it doesn't significantly alter the way the music sounds then why play odd?

  • no offence intended here guys.....your time is too strict and this don't swing an inch......5/4 is a combination of 3/4 followed by a bar of 2/4........but the 3/4 must be played with a" lilt" followed by a lazy 2/4.....lighten up on the One.....and solo with anticiipated triplets.......hope this helps...but all in all a pretty fair effort :-)

    It does not have to be a bar 3 and 2, you can count and pays 5/4 or any time signature however you see fit and sounds good. The problem here is they are stuck in the mentality I AM PLAYING IN ODD TIME, CHECK ME OUT NEIL PEART I WIN, SO ODD and forgetting that jazz is comp and experimentation and playing beyond the 5/4 training wheels (i.e. mixed meters, metric modulation, displacement, ) Bottom line: you aren't supposed to sound odd, it should flow just as 4/4

I fell out of my seat laughing because I picked up on the same thing; they are playing as if they are all counting, 1 2 3 4 5, 1 2 3 4 5, especially the drummer. I'm no Dave "Wack'O"(weckl) but I agree that performance should be for the song and not for the time signature and even more so when playing jazz.

  • For the person who believes that a teacher demo should be "balls to the walls" playing. Balls to the walls will not get you a gig, nor help you keep a gig. Teacher demos should be about helping the student establish the fundamentals needed to get and keep a gig.

  • @Theseventhknight yeah, i know its all just called jazz, but you know how theres this, then theres that bill evans sorta quiet sweet jazz and theres that sort of loud trumpet ensemble jazz.

    There are far more types, im just tring to differentiate between them all.

  • Well there's a few schools of jazz that have come to be called 'types' of jazz - for example 'bebop', 'cool jazz', 'hard bop' 'jazz fusion' etc, but sometimes you can't really label someone's 'sound' without actually using their name (you might say "that Bill Evans Trio sound"). I would call this video 'educational jazz' - as it's from a drum education dvd. Not great in my opinion - when a teacher is giving a demo it should just be honest, balls to the wall playing - this is a little bit safe.

    It may be by the same guy, but its melodic structure is not similar. The rythmic structure is, but what can you do? It's 5/4.

    I've found that Guthrie Govans "fives" is a good 5/4 piece. While it's not jazz, it's definitely interesting. Check it out if you haven't already.

    Because yes, in Far More Drums and Take Five, the drums are practically identical. The ride pattern is, for sure.

    But this guy varries his ride cymbal patterns a lot more than Joe Morello. His fills and comping are based less on the snare and more around the rest of the kit. I personally prefer Joe Morello's style.

    I was raised on Western music, so rock and reggae, just 4/4 all over the place. And I kinda regret it.

  • I know how you feel. I regret that I discovered such interesting music so late, just a few years ago. But once you have made a begin, all comes naturally.

    A 17/16 for example is to me not about counting 16ths, but about... 'feeling' where the accents are placed. A song I wrote about one year ago had different timesignatures, one of them was 17/16, with accents on the 5th, 7th, 12th and 17th 16th-note.

    Trust me, it's never too late to get used to it!

  • So true, about the accents. When I was first introduced to odd timing, I tried counting every beat, but when I encountered stuff in 15/16, 13/16 and 11/8 that became really odd.

    If anyone is hooked on counting, a great thing to do is to break it up. For example: 5/4 is not 5/4. It is 3/4 alternating with 2/4. That way you place the accent on the 1 and the 4, so it feels natural and the highest number you have to count to is three, so after a while you don't have to count anymore.

  • Yeah, counting is good for slow stuff an long signatures. Counting to 3 is one way, but I don't consider it to be the best. I would rather advise to count to a maximum of 6 (because 7 has 2 vowels, and that's not what we want). That is easier if you talk about stuff like 13/4 for example. Place the accents on 1, 7 and 10 and you go like; 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 1 2 3 4.

    If you wanna do that by counting 3's you might lose the count. You must count 4 times to 3 and one single note.

    It's like the intense polymetres set me up for intense time signatures, same concept just on a bigger scale.

  • in jazz, (what i think) sometimes when us drummers lay off the cymballs, it starts to sound empty if u know what i mean? like he was playing through most of the song using his cymbal which was pretty loud, but then to lay off it would just seem to wtfish.

  • As Jazz drummers, we often have more than one ride....I have 4 but one doubles as a crash/ride and one is a sizzler....The two over his toms provide different tones that mix well together....

  • This tune doesn;t really have a name, it's simply just a 5/4 swing playalong that comes on a CD with the Jazz Drumming System. I think at this point any 5/4 swing tune will sound like the one and only "Take 5" which is still my favorite jazz standard to play and listen to!

I was more chastising the critics who spend there time pointing out the lack of Shakespearean meter in 3rd grade spelling books =) I suppose it's all irrelevant from this elevator to that one. (ie a tangential Einstein reference in a ignominiously analogous reply) I am definitely not defending the song's level of inspiration or musicianship.

THE best known 5/4 song is prob Take Five, and they are playing an easy Take Fiv-ish riff for practicing soloists to play to. Read before you type.
