I take nothing away from Joan Crawford, not her fame, grace, dignity, talent or her lady-like manner. But I understand that when she was young, she was quite the little slut. But that's always the way, isn't it? Do what you want when you are young and then when you get older, you become this pillar of society and totally proper in every way. This is nothing new. It's constantly happening all the time.
strange lady. very odd behaving and her thought process' her ability to communicate with others seems labored. i think she lived inside her own mind and most of the time she was acting. i think her fame was of utmost importance to her such that she could not relate well to average people or topics.
@sweetkittytwine You are correct. Everything Joan did, she did it for the audience. No matter what rumors circulated about her home life, she must be respected for giving US everything she had inside of her.
@sweetkittytwine She explained in the video clip, that she taught herself how to speak clearly and she worked with her own gestures. She related perfectly well to the person interviewing her. What the problem is, is that Joan was a lady. Something we no see today!
i wish i could have met Joan Crawford she is everything that i want to be as a women and she is such a amazing role model for me and other women in the world she is so smart creatively talented and talented in acting etc and she is my favorite actress of all time and iam her biggest fan in the world rip Joan Crawford queen of hollywood then now and forever !
i believe joan crawford was one of thew most fasinating people of the last century. she was so complex and in later years seemed to have such a peaceful aura about her, very nuturing and one with her spirituality. she also seems incredibly intelligent . she observed people and learned from her fans. i only wish i wasn't 35 years old. i would have loved to meet her.
Joan really had a sweetness about her when interviewed. I am a good judge of character and she seems like a good person. A bit of a perfectionist , but every woman wants to appear their best, especially on T.V. I noted she didn't critize Bette Davis like Davis made fun of her and critezed her.
I always loved the fact that whenever she smoked in a movie she hit the butt on a table or something before she got a light. Not because of the smoking, but because she totally understood the importance of creating a trademark. She was so right! That's her " thing "
The woman who did this interview is very good- I'd imagine that Joan Crawford could be a bit intimidating, particularly if she had a drink or two - yet the interveiwer conducts the interview in an interesting and courteous way. So many interviewers today are just out to make a name for themselves by being obnoxious, crude, and with a contempt for the dignity of the person they are interviewing. An interesting piece- thank you for posting.
joan crawford had a stage name called scat the cat/kat cause she had a scat fetish, it was a secret unmentioned life, its romered that she said that scat is healthy eatins lol
She is great, but you can tell she is always ON. She never stops acting. You can see this with all the pauses she takes and the way she describes things.
What a joy. I appreciate her self-discipline, always have. Even if it allegedly went to the extremes at times, I still find something very attractive about it. Perhaps it's her dedication to it.
None of us will ever TRULY KNOW any of these great stars. All I can say is, she was absolutely gorgeous to look at, especially in her younger days at MGM, was a fine, fine actress, and once her career took off, it was thee most important thing in the world to her. Was she a good Mother? I think she probably was as good as many of the professional women who were Mom's many years ago. All of her children seemed to love her, appreciate her, except Christine. That book was totally below the belt!
Women in their 60's today look so much better, but Joan smoked alot, drank too much but yes she still had that contrived elegance. You get the notion that every word and movement was planned about 15 seconds before she did it. I do agree with Bette Davis I think Joan was a phony but she was fun to watch. Bette's interviews are more real and off the cuff.
The roses analogue.... She was an iron showbizz lady and not dumb. Yes, why not a a poetic streak? But I think the 'gentle reproach' was part of her dominatrix spectacle.
She can be compared with Elizabeth Taylor, another larger than life woman. Don't forget the ladies never had a normal everyday life, Elizabeth even less so because she started being a star so much younger. It moulds behaviour and expectations. Windstorm1000, I don't suggest Joan was a psycho. Queen of the Tantrum, at the most.
She exaggerated often and fantasized things up and every movement was a carefully studied one. Her believes and principles and do's and don'ts bordered on the ridiculous and senseless, but were delivered as the only right thing to do and the ultimate truth. Crawford was a freakishly obsessed and neurotic woman and a too theatrical actress. And in all this, she managed to look the well-spoken, immaculately dressed, royal lady. Even when boozed up. I worship her as much as I abhor her.
Lot of wisdom here. You see a Joan at peace with herself and the world. I like how she used the analogy of the roses still blooming as more things to do in life.
Joan adored Cesar and often he accompanied Joan as her date at this stage in her life. I love that they shared an close friendship and he respected and loved Joan. I think he led a rather solitary life as a closeted gay man in Hollywood.
@beyoncetyratina If you see (e.g. on YouTube) clips of young Joan dancing flapper dances in silent films, she truly was stupendous . . . solo, no partner needed. And in the 1920s, as a trendsetting stylish young woman she wore the unprecedentedly shockingly short skirts of the day . . . but in after decades she had the great taste and maturity to wear glamorous outfits custom perfectly suited to her maturing ages and her personal diva style.
Lol, true. Joan was a great dancer. And the way she dressed over the years really made her look younger than what age she actually was. She was wonderful!
our mother's aunt was joan's neighbor in her apartment building on 5th avenue in the 1950s

Those thick bold eyebrows will always be her trademark. Joan had a presence
about her that seemed carefully rehearsed. She always used her facial expression
with such taste and elegance. Her voice was mellow and regal.

Joan always wore classy, colourful outfits, very stylish and sexy. Those were the days.
Look at how women dress now! They either dress like sluts or slobs. Generally speaking of course.
