Yeah Mexicans, Puertoricans, Colombians, etc. are Americans, but when someone refers to themself as an American, they mean United States American, but that's just too long unless you want to be specific. And another thing, if they can call themselves American, why can't people from the U.S. call themselves American? It all one big Hemisphere called America, right?

@phillyguy95 They are from the North American continent, so technically they are Americans. In the same way that someone from the European continent would be considered to be collectively European, even if they where actually from England and defined themselves as either English, or British.
and if you want to be really techical, the title of 'American' really belongs to the natives, who where made up of red Indians and the people who inhibit modern day Mexico but were forced out
