I live nearby; I used to see Williams hanging out along Denny between Stewart and Virginia. I had heard all the descriptions of this and it seemed somewhat ambiguous, like there were two sides to a story. After seeing the video all that goes away. It may be a tough job, but the cop should have been more careful and level-headed. Instead he's scared, and stupid. To be obvious, it takes much longer to put something down than to drop it from a standing/walking stance. IMO, 4-7 seconds is not enough time to put down a knife without appearing to make an aggressive move, considering all of the extenuating circumstances previously covered here.

Im not saying the cop was right but if you actually watch the video you see the dude walking with the blade out in front of the vehicle and as to the stupid remark about "the cop positions his car so that the camera isn't pointed directly at the incident." notice the barrier that blocks him from pulling onto the walk and that he was at the crosswalk and couldn't pull off anywhere. I don't think he just thought gee i think ill shot some one today.

@majordysfunkshun The knife may have been closed by John before he was shot i will say as he turned or a rookie cop could have closed it not thinking, but and i mean that but it does not mean that he did not come at the officer in a threatening way. As i said if anyone watches the video as john crosses the street he does have the knife out craving the wood piece in his hand, all anyone has to do is watch the video once and not take sides first before.

To be honest, the first time I watched the video, I had no idea that there was a problem until the officer was in the camera's range. I just didn't see anything criminal happening in that video that would have caused an officer to chase anyone.

After reading the comments, I noticed something missing. Have you all noticed that the officer never announced who he was? He never identified himself as an officer of the law.
Even if Mr. Williams wasn't hard-of-hearing, it's likely that he'd still have been taken off-guard by someone yelling commands at his back, as any innocent person would. After all, the man behind John could have been trying to rob him.

In his last encounter with police prior to this incident he threatened to kill the police. There were no "split second decision(s)" that needed to be made that day, and this video is living proof that Mr. Williams never saw a gun or a badge, and was never given the time to properly comply before he died.

I live nearby; I used to see Williams hanging out along Denny between Stewart and Virginia. I had heard all the descriptions of this and it seemed somewhat ambiguous, like there were two sides to a story. After seeing the video all that goes away. It may be a tough job, but the cop should have been more careful and level-headed. Instead he's scared, and stupid. This makes me nervous about being a pedestrian in Seattle, as if the cops will shoot me if there is ever a slight miscommunication.

Well, Birk won't be facing any criminal charges as the Prosecutor said that there isn't enough evidence to move forward criminally with this case in his mind- Selective prosecution.
In a Police State the Police are never wrong and citizens are collateral damage in this militarized Policing age. US Prison Industrial Complex is a part of the US Military Industrial Complex.

His body language is very self revealing of his future deadly intentions. He's not scared one iota as he initiated the whole incident from its premeditiated start to its deadly conclusion. As well Birk never IDs himself as a SPD Officer just yells- hey hey hey, drop the knife(3times) and then shoots a deaf in 1 ear man in his side and back- 4 seconds to death. @IceManLikeGervin Just wanted to clarify something, Birk actually never commanded Williams to "drop the knife," he repeatedly instructed Williams to, "put down the knife," which is a completely different command. To be obvious, it takes much longer to put something down than to drop it from a standing/walking stance. IMO, 4-7 seconds is not enough time to put down a knife without appearing to make an aggressive move, considering all of the extenuating circumstances previously covered here.

Im not saying the cop was right but if you actually watch the video you see the dude walking with the blade out in front of the vehicle and as to the stupid remark about "the cop positions his car so that the camera isn't pointed directly at the incident." notice the barrier that blocks him from pulling onto the walk and that he was at the crosswalk and couldn't pull off anywhere. I don't think he just thought gee i think ill shot some one today.

After reading the comments, I noticed something missing. Have you all noticed that the officer never announced who he was? He never identified himself as an officer of the law.
Even if Mr. Williams wasn't hard-of-hearing, it's likely that he'd still have been taken off-guard by someone yelling commands at his back, as any innocent person would. After all, the man behind John could have been trying to rob him.
In the end, John WAS robbed that sunny day in Seattle, by a man sworn to protect him.

If you watch closely at about 51 sec you can see that Mr. Williams appears to be looking at a small piece of paper in his right hand, and in his left hand looks to be a large manila envelope and as he gets further across you can see his totem pole or wood carving is under his left arm. Both hands full and a log under his left arm. Wheres the knife? Maybe Mr. Williams used it to open his mail..... but I didn't see a knife.

@yummyvoo Finally somebody that is spot on! This cop is a hero ridding society of a potentially dangerous, frail old man with a 3" long pocket knife. A man long known in the community for carving pieces of wood into rather attractive pieces of art. That lady carrying a bag looked very suspect to me as well and am surprised he didn't shoot her for possibly having a steak knife in that bag.
I'd love to personally put a medal around that cops neck and hang him from the nearest street light.

All across the country, we hear of homeless people committing minor crimes to get arrested and tossed into a nice warm cozy jail cell for the winter. We also hear of city managers telling police NOT to arrest criminals because there is no more money for the prison system. There is, therefore, a purely economic motive for the police to be encouraged to shoot and kill all suspects on sight.
