He actually did live in Europe when he studied at Louvain in Belgium. He probably concluded that the Existentialists had no meaning because in reality they lack meaning and their philosophy is simply wrong. And you forget that philosophy (at least in its classical form) used to be about proving God and the existence of morality.

@Fortenshire sartre's existentialism is without meaning. Bishop Sheen points it out well "L'ineferno son les autres" is in "Closed door". it just point so "Fly" and Orestes who says "I was struck by freedom as by lightning" and goes on to say to Jupiter i.e. god, "there are hundreds of paths that lead to you and yet I am free and alone. I must abide by my own rules now". Sartre's absolute freedom is absolute solitude and selfdestruction, therefore Newman's eksistentialism is better.
